They are absolutely doing this, and she already has a strike against her.

BertramDitore ,
@BertramDitore@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, putting aside the clear political bias, Cannon has been sitting on routine pretrial motions that judges in her position usually rule on very quickly. To a limited degree I can sympathize that she might want to take extra time to be super careful with her rulings on such an important case. But the fact that she has only presided over four (read it: four) trials in her career, makes me think it’s gross inexperience verging on incompetence and that she is purposefully slow-walking to show plausibly deniable favor to the defendant.

Let’s remember that the defendant gave the judge her job. That’s so fucked up, America.

charonn0 ,
@charonn0@startrek.website avatar

She should be removed. Not just from the case, but from the bench entirely. Her corruption is plainly obvious.

PeleSpirit ,

Absolutely, she at the very least, should have removed herself since trump hired her.

foggy , in California Gov. Gavin Newsom signs law to raise minimum wage for fast food workers to $20 per hour

I’m all for it, but this creates an issue for skilled labor making roughly the same wage.

Basically everyone needs like 100% more money.

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Doesn’t create an issue, creates an opportunity

“Pay me more or I’ll go get a job at a fast food place” is a simple and easy argument for raises at any reasonable place

foggy ,

It disincentivizes gaining a skill, which is bad for society.

monk ,

It disincentives gaining skills that can only earn less than 40k a year.

sadreality ,

Is that what teevee to you?

Real issue that this is not a universal wage increase. I don't get why it is only for "fast food" workers

acceptable_pumpkin ,

You’re looking at this backwards. It essentially would make a business compete with every other minimum wage job if all they’re offering is $20/h. They either raise wages to lure skilled workers, or try to provide some other benefits.

Mudface ,

Or just work a part time gig at McDonald’s for a couple 5 hour shifts a week to supplement your career job.

Makes it pretty appealing to think about flipping some burgers for $20 an hour, $100 a day 2-3 days a week.

Could be an extra $1,000 a month or so for people looking for something to supplement their income.

DjMeas ,

I don’t think it’s unskilled labor at all. If anything, your so-called skilled labor is underpaying you then. We shouldn’t hold others down.

Kolanaki ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Basically everyone needs like 100% more money.

Yes. They do. If you’re doing something vastly more specialized than making food quickly, you should be paid much more than $20/hour.

And in California, $20/hour still isn’t a livable wage.

Num10ck ,

and of course if every makes 100% more money then the price of everything goes up 100% and we’re no better off.

Newsom’s signature on Thursday reflects the power and influence of labor unions in the nation’s most populous state, which have worked to organize fast food workers in an attempt to improve their wages and working conditions.

“This is for my ancestors. This is for all the farm works, all the cotton-pickers. This is for them. We ride on their shoulders,” said Anneisha Williams, who works at a Jack in the Box restaurant in Southern California.

charonn0 , in 2 Michigan fake electors ask judge to drop charges, citing state AG’s claim they’re ‘brainwashed’
@charonn0@startrek.website avatar

It doesn’t matter whether they believed the election was stolen. It’s not illegal to believe that, and that’s not what they’re accused of.

What actually matters is that they knew they were not the duly-appointed electors for their state. That’s what makes it fraud. That’s why they’re criminals. And that’s why they should spend a few decades confined to a small room where they can think about what they’ve done.

From the article, it sounds like there’s been specific legal stuff going on that influenced this:

Newsom’s signature on Thursday reflects the power and influence of labor unions in the nation’s most populous state, which have worked to organize fast food workers in an attempt to improve their wages and working conditions.

It also settles — for now, at least — a fight between labor and business groups over how to regulate the industry. In exchange for higher pay, labor unions have dropped their attempt to make fast food corporations liable for the misdeeds of their independent franchise operators in California, an action that could have upended the business model on which the industry is based. The industry, meanwhile, has agreed to pull a referendum related to worker wages off the 2024 ballot.

So yeah, labor unions bringing cases that could effectively dismantle the corporate/franchisee relationship is a big, big deal to fast food companies, which are generally the most “franchised” types of businesses in the US. Agreeing to higher pay to slow unionization efforts and to outright stop cases that change how the core of their businesses function seems like a smart short-term move on their part.

It would still be better if it was for everyone, but this particularly seems to have some history behind why it happened for just these workers.

Ah yes formal business attire, the universal dress code for those who accomplish nothing while looking very important. Very appropriate

Ya know gym shorts and a t-shirt besides being infinitely more practical and comfortable would lead to confusion with actual hard working Americans who don’t have the luxury of getting paid to do nothing.
