This is yet another reason we need President Harris.

Trump will let Google get away with it.

merc ,

What we really need is President Biden. This is all happening thanks to him. There’s some hope that Harris would continue his policies if elected, but there are strong rumours that some donors are supporting her with the agreement that if she wins she gets rid of Lina Khan.

Viking_Hippie ,

What we really need is President Biden. This is all happening thanks to him.

No on both counts. Don’t give him credit for other people’s work.

He might have been the final one to sign off on them, but cabinet appointments are decided by committee and I guarantee you that the former Senator of the most corporation-friendly state of them all wasn’t the one who suggested Lina Khan OR Lauren McFerran at the NLRB.

his policies

Again, it’s not HIS policies. Stop giving the old man with 900 years of conservative policies the credit for the stellar work of young women many times as progressive and in touch with the realities of regular people as him.

merc ,

It’s not like she’s doing these things behind his back.

The progressive wing of the party might have pushed him into accepting her appointment, but he still appointed her and she’s kicking ass.

Viking_Hippie , (edited )

It’s not like she’s doing these things behind his back

Nope, but she IS doing it without his help, so he’s not due any of the credit.

The progressive wing of the party might have pushed him into accepting her appointment, but he still appointed her and she’s kicking ass.

Yes, SHE is kicking ass based on HER work and HER policy and enforcement choices, not his.

Absent pressure from the progressive wing og the party, he would have chosen someone older and more palatable to his owner donors.

He does NOT deserve credit for her work just because he relented to the pressure from people more pro worker than himself.

merc ,

Nope, but he IS doing it without his help, so he’s not due any of the credit.

He’s her boss and he appointed her, he does deserve credit for selecting her and sticking with her.

Yes, SHE is kicking ass based on HER work and HER policy and enforcement choices, not his.

And he’s her boss, so he deserves credit for hiring her and backing her.

Viking_Hippie ,

He’s her boss and he appointed her, he does deserve credit for selecting her and sticking with her.

Other people selected her in spite of him and he relented and he’s refrained from firing someone without cause.

Neither of those are achievements and just because he’s the boss doesn’t mean that he gets to take credit for HER work.

And he’s her boss, so he deserves credit for hiring her

Nope, see above.

and backing her.

Do you have any source on him actively backing her, beyond just not firing her without cause?

Zoboomafoo ,

any source on him actively backing her

Yes, she’s his subordinate

Viking_Hippie ,

That’s not actively backing her. You have a very distorted view of the relationship between a boss and an employee.

Hiring her for a job she’s qualified for on the advice of others and then not firing her is a passive lack of opposition at best, NOT active support.

FundMECFSResearch ,

You can make up all the arguments you want.

I think I made it quite clear that I am already angry at them and holding them accountable. All watching the video will do will make me feel awful. What does that accomplish?

    ZoopZeZoop ,

I’m with you. I watched the video of the man who was trying to comply with orders from the police and the officer warned him if he did anything other than what he was being ordered, he would be shot. Then, he was given confusing orders, and was shot when he did the wrong thing. He was on his knees with his hands in plain view when the threat came. There were multiple officers with weapons drawn. The man was sobbing and begging before he was shot. I can’t unsee it. I think it’s important that people see it so others can be held accountable, but not EVERYONE has to see it.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Agree 100%. And, on top of the reason you gave for it to be important for some people to see, it’s also important to keep as a historical record. But I personally do not need to see or hear people dying or people not reacting despite knowing other people are dying to be upset about the situation or to want to hold those responsible to account.

I’ve never seen George Floyd’s murder. That did not stop me from protesting the police murdering him because… you know… they murdered him.

    Daniel Shaver?

    Bodycam video: youtu.be/VBUUx0jUKxc

In August 2018, Brailsford was reinstated by the Mesa Police Department, staying for a further 42 days in what the department described as a “budget position”. The department agreed to reimburse Brailsford for medical expenses related to his post-traumatic stress disorder – the result of his shooting of Shaver and the resultant criminal trial. The reinstatement allowed Brailsford to apply for “accidental disability” experienced during the course of work. As a result, Brailsford was unanimously approved to be retired on medical grounds. Brailsford was also given a pension of $2,500 per month. The fact that Brailsford was ultimately medically retired instead of remaining fired was only revealed to the public in July 2019.

He just fucking executed him in the hallway and walked over his body, and he gets rewarded?

If anyone wants to know what Rowling said…

On X, Rowling posted a photo of Khelif and Carini. In the photo Khelif looks like she’s patting a crying Carini on the back. But that’s not what Rowling sees.

“Could any picture sum up our new men’s rights movement better?” Rowling posted. “The smirk of a male who’s [sic] knows he’s protected by a misogynist sporting establishment enjoying the distress of a woman he’s just punched in the head, and whose life’s ambition he’s just shattered.”

Of course, once Rowling learned that Khelif is not a man, she apologized…. Ha. Just kidding.

X user @YourAnonNews posted, “Imane Khelif should sue every single account and outlet saying she is trans. Assholes are putting her life at risk, it is illegal in her country to be trans. The continuance of the blatant trans lie continues unfettered on Twitter.”

Rowling responded to this with, “The idea that those objecting to a male punching a female in the name of sport are objecting because they believe Khelif to be ‘trans’ is a joke. We object because we saw a male punching a female.”

It’s interesting to combine this with trump’s “I say Kamala is not black” to conclude that in their worldview, people can’t just be free to determine what they are (which could be debated, I guess), but what is worst is that some special people think they have the right to determine what anyone else is and how to live their life based solely on their own whims. An aristocracy of buffoons.

    orcrist ,

Yes, exactly. The inconsistency is a consequence of the objective. Many people discriminate in order to gain or maintain personal power. Or to put it another way, in many situations it’s true that racist policies led to racist values, not the other way around.

Of course this situation is not only about racism. It’s about mixing together several different kinds of discrimination. But the same rules apply.

My wife really loved it. I saw the first movie with her and did not care for it. Then when my daughter was little, she had me start reading the first book to her. I thought it was really boring and my daughter must have too, because she lost interest after a few chapters. I’m not super into magical fantasy anyway, so it isn’t exactly my cup of tea, but my dad got a scholarship to a real prestigious English school which would be, I suppose, the “muggle” version of Hogwarts, and as the poor (and Jewish) kid, he got treated like utter shit by both students and teachers pretty much the whole time, so it’s what was on my mind the entire time I watched the movie and read the book. That didn’t help.

    AnarchistArtificer ,

I enjoyed it when I was younger, but in the wake of Rowling coming out as a trash human, I’ve seen a lot of breakdowns of Harry Potter that highlight that it was actually never good. This YouTube video by Shaun is an extremely thorough breakdown of that stuff if anyone who liked the books read this. In hindsight, I’m shocked by how popular these books were, what with characters like Seamus Finnegan, an Irish character with a tendency to accidentally blow things up (!).

I went to a university where they filmed a bunch of Harry Potter, and whilst the classism I saw was no doubt quite different to your dad’s experience, I think there’s a common core. Big, posh institutions like that like everyone to think that they’re meritocratic, but they’re just prestige machines fueled by classism and racism.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Absolutely. In fact, that snobbery extended for him when he ended his schooling there. He decided to go to Sheffield and asked his headmaster for a recommendation and was told, “boys at this school go to Oxford or Cambridge.” He ended up getting into Sheffield eventually anyway. Fuck that guy.

The United States is one of the few democracies in the world where the government does not take any responsibility in registering its citizens. This one-of-a-kind, self-initiated voter registration process acts as a major barrier to voter turnout and leads to often- inaccurate voter rolls. In contrast, the international norm is a process of government-mandated automatic voter registration of every citizen who reaches voting age. This report explores how other major well-established democracies (Canada, Australia, Sweden, Italy, New Zealand and others) concretely manage to build comprehensive, inclusive, accurate voting rolls that leave no voters behind while ensuring a high level of privacy.

No problem with ID for voting, just have to make sure they’re accessible by all at no cost (both time and monetary).

Republicans proposals for voter ID so far have been riddled with ID exclusions that, while never admitted to, would exclude a large part of the population that they don’t want to be allowed to vote. Either include more types of ID or make sure to provide everyone with a voter id for free before the election.

For that, you need to make ID mandatory and easily accessible first. Otherwise it’s just voter suppression.

    DarkDecay ,

As long as they’re for maga officials sure. They seem to be doing most of the voter fraud afterall

    orcrist ,

For many decades North Dakota didn’t even have voter registration. In 2012 it was alleged that nine individuals were suspect, so the state finally passed a voter registration law in 2013. But none of those 2012 individuals were charged. So then ask yourself, why did they pass the law? Well, maybe they passed the law so they could disenfranchise college kids and Native Americans. Actually, that’s not hypothetical. That’s a fact. Native communities had to bring legal challenges against the new law because they were facing difficulty voting.

I think it’s also helpful to look at historical examples. When MLK was locked up in Birmingham Jail, there were counties in Alabama that were majority black and yet no black people could vote. Imagine that. Voting laws being crafted to keep minorities out.

So you keep pushing for your voter ID, but if you can’t figure out how to keep your state from becoming the next North Dakota or Alabama, it probably will.
