AToM_exe , in People with alcohol use disorder impaired after heavy drinking, despite claims of higher tolerance

I’m too drunk to read thought this… Where’s summarize bot?

itsdavetho ,

tldr they found in their study that alcoholics/people with AUD can drink 50% more (7-8 drinks) and be twice as intoxicated , as compared to standard drinkers and alcoholics at 4-5 drinks, where the alcoholics were comparatively much less intoxicated than ‘standard drinkers’ (I think this implies that alcoholics do have a tolerance to alcohol but tolerance is not linear)

Not ground breaking stuff imo

GunnarRunnar ,

So the headline is lying? Curious.

itsdavetho ,

No, perhaps I’ve poorly explained it. The article’s not a very long read though.

SheeEttin ,

When they drank alcohol in our study at a dose similar to their usual drinking pattern, we saw significant impairments on both the fine motor and cognitive tests that was even more impairment than a light drinker gets at the intoxicating dose.

So at the “standard” drunk level of 4 drinks, alcoholics are less impaired, but when alcoholics drink more than that they are more impaired than a “normal” drunk person.

So alcoholics can have a higher tolerance for base consumption, but when they pass that they go straight to trashed.

acunasdaddy ,

That’s not quite right. Alcoholics do tolerate lower level of alcohol (4 drinks) than normal people. But once they get to 8 (which they do - remember these are alcoholics) they don’t get more drink than a normal drink person but they are more than twice as drunk as before and they are less drunk than they really are.

SheeEttin ,

they are more than twice as drunk as before and they are less drunk than they really are

I can’t make any sense of this part.

acunasdaddy ,

Sorry that wasn’t very well written.

The point is that alcoholics are not MORE drunk than non alcoholics on 8 drinks. They are just as hammered (but not more) than non alcoholics. The problem is that they THINK they are not as drunk while a nonalcoholic may recognize their impairment

I have been to a few union jobs. I don’t like unions. I hate some of the folks there. They can’t be fired unless they do something really stupid. So most end up doing bare minimum.

afraid_of_zombies , in Americans are ‘hunkering down’ and buying less food as inflation bites, one grocery giant says—instead they’re raiding their freezers

Inflation doesn’t exist, the banks need another bailout, student loan forgiveness is a bad idea, and let the poors eat cake.

-every economist

PlasticExistence ,

Robert Reich would like a word to the contrary. He has a good YouTube channel where he discusses this nonsense in easy to understand ways.

afraid_of_zombies ,

Might check him but doubt it. I don’t trust economists, astrologers, or any other form of shaman.

PlasticExistence ,

Not all economists are as you describe, so if you won’t see the proof for that, would you at least stop with the sweeping generalizations?

afraid_of_zombies ,

I will when the majority of polled economists consistently support views that are not aligned with the regular population. When I see daily articles from groups like Brookings and the Economist bragging about how great Wall Street bailouts are and condemning student loan forgiveness I am not inclined to go find the single lone unicorn out there that disagrees.

Somehow we are supposed to believe the moral hazard and inflation risk of student loan debt forgiveness is real and horrible while bank bailouts it is non-existent. Just the other day I read an article by Grunweld explaining how bank bailouts are emergency measures and they don’t have to factor in what mistakes led to it or what problems will come from the fix. Meanwhile if you even hint at getting rid of student loan debt suddenly everyone wants to talk about those issues.

People lost their pensions, jobs, and homes in 2008. Goldman Sachs showed record profits. Economists approve of both.

PlasticExistence ,

Well that’s a whole lot of words that you might hear Robert Reich say.

afraid_of_zombies ,

Good for him?

venusenvy47 , in Typo sends millions of US military emails to Russian ally Mali

I’m a little confused about a comment in the article that says the Mali military will be taking over the .ml domain on Monday. Is the country of Mali going to start using a different domain next week?

ThatGirlKylie ,

I read it as the military is taking it over and controlling the internet/domain over there and not that .ml will only be for mali military.

ThatGirlKylie , in Typo sends millions of US military emails to Russian ally Mali

I’m confused, so he identifies this problem ten years ago but only just now raised an alarm as his contract was due to be up on Monday?

According to the Financial Times, which first reported the story, Dutch internet entrepreneur Johannes Zuurbier identified the problem more than 10 years ago.

Since 2013, he has had a contract to manage Mali’s country domain and, in recent months, has reportedly collected tens of thousands of misdirected emails.

None were marked as classified, but, according to the newspaper, they included medical data, maps of US military facilities, financial records and the planning documents for official trips as well as some diplomatic messages.

Mr Zuurbier wrote a letter to US officials this month to raise the alarm. He said that his contract with the Mali government was due to finish soon, meaning “the risk is real and could be exploited by adversaries of the US”.

Mali’s military government was due to take control of the domain on Monday.

incognito_15 , in Got tipping rage? This barista reveals what it's like to be behind the tip screen

Tbh, I’ve got tipping rage. I breeze past the tip screen, and even this article that’s sympathetic to tipping culture won’t change my mindset. I’m being asked to tip for things that never asked for one before the pandemic, all while the prices of the goods have gone up. I’m already paying more for the food/goods. How dare you ask for more? I’m tired of being fleeced for even more money. If you didn’t do anything beyond your job to prepare my order, and you’re not actively waiting on me at a sit down restaurant, then I pay the cost of the good. If your employer isn’t paying you enough, take it up with them.

rauls4 , in Americans are ‘hunkering down’ and buying less food as inflation bites, one grocery giant says—instead they’re raiding their freezers

Don’t know about anyone else but I no longer shop at regular supermarkets for most of my food. It’s mostly Aldi and home prepared meals for us now. We are pretty well off financially but I refuse to pay outrageous amounts for big brand products any longer. I’d rather save the money and use it on a nice family vacation.

Aldi’s decision to change all of the lanes to self checkouts at the stores around me has really turned me off. I thought they would be one of the last bastions against self checkouts. The workers there were well paid and happy. I don’t really know where to shop for groceries with a conscience anymore.

I have been around rich people my entire life. Not just rich people, WEALTHY people. Blue bloods. Old steel family money. Wall St families. They are nuts and are not what I would consider as a net positive for society. They’re closed minded, self absorbed, and held hostage by their own dysfunctional and degenerate culture. You could say that about any culture but those cultures don’t wield power.

We need ethical AI to run our basic society and get rid of crazy families like the Sacklers who intentionally poison the populace with drugs.

They killed INNOCENT people intentionally. Like the Nazis did. Think about that.

goldenbug ,

Lol ethical AI

Notyou ,

I feel that ethical AI will be purchased, copyrighted, changed, and reimplmentated faster than most technologies. The problem comes from the owner class changing the code to give pre-approved answers to the masses.

It can easily be another form of control. Like religion, most people will accept it as correct based on their faith and lack of understanding.

HubertManne ,

I feel ethical AI will be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, and numbered!
