“learn from mistakes”

It’d be funny if it weren’t so mind numbingly terrifying.

fubo ,

To be clear, authoritarians don’t learn from mistakes until after many, many deaths. See e.g. the Mao regime campaign against the sparrows …

really , in UPS reaches tentative contract with 340,000 unionized workers potentially dodging calamitous strike

This is pretty incredible news.

Far as I can recall this is the first significant Union gain in a while.

Which makes me wonder which way will go from here.

A) Amazon drivers will get similar benefits? B) UPS will never again put themselves in the position where they fall behind Amazon competitively.

anomaly13 ,

For A) to happen, we need to unionize Amazon. That’s gonna be a tall order, but it’s one we need to tackle head on.

TransplantedSconie ,

OBrian is coming for Amazon and Fed Ex next. If anyone can do it, he can.

TransplantedSconie , in UPS reaches tentative contract with 340,000 unionized workers potentially dodging calamitous strike

UPS driver here with 20 years.

This is hands down the best contract I’ve ever seen. Hats off to O’Brian and the rest of the negotiation team. It gets a much needed pay raise for the Part Time guys and gals, has strong language for keeping cameras and spy-tech out of our faces, and addresses much needed safety issues. I’m looking forward to sitting down and reading the contract in full in the next couple of days.

DocMcStuffin , in Researchers find deliberate backdoor in police radio encryption algorithm
@DocMcStuffin@lemmy.world avatar

Not a backdoor. A backdoor is when there’s a secret key or method that’s deliberately builtin to sidestep the encryption.

Instead, they created an encryption algorithm that only used 32 bits for the cypher key. That was a design choice to comply with the Arms Export Control Act back when encryption was considered a munition. This is roughly equivalent to putting a really crappy lock on your front door. Anyone with the proper skillset can get past it.

The real problems are:

  1. They used a proprietary encryption algorithm: TEA1. This is highly frowned upon because an algorithm needs to be tested repeatedly by experts in the field to prove its worth. Or as they say, don’t roll your own because you WILL mess up.
  2. The hid the algorithm from scrutiny using a non-disclosure agreement. This was basically security through obscurity. There were people that knew it was broken but let it fly under the radar.
  3. They continued to use a broken algorithm when it should have been deprecated over 20 years ago then left out of future products.
  4. It’s all implemented on a bunch of hardware that can’t easily be upgraded.
reddig33 , in FCC chair: Speed standard of 25Mbps down, 3Mbps up isn’t good enough anymore

Throw more free money at the major telco firms. I’m sure that’ll fix it. Not like we haven’t tried that before. Repeatedly.

orcrist , in FCC chair: Speed standard of 25Mbps down, 3Mbps up isn’t good enough anymore

We don’t really think the FCC chair is going to do anything, do we?

omega_x3 ,

There are 4 people in the FCC that get to vote on policy, 2 democrats and 2 republican. The republican ones are just Comcast and att lobbyist. The democrats don’t suck but can’t do anything without a third vote. The president gets to appointment someone to be a tie breaker, but Biden didn’t do it until after midterm so they no longer had the votes to get her approved, and by the time the current one gets through the next election will be happening so nothing will get done. If Biden wins another FCC voter will have to step down and wait for Biden to pick a replacement and Congress gets to approve or Biden losses and the republican appoints another lobbyist.

So no nothing will be done.

Maybe read the article before being a total shitass.

While the readings would’ve been considered a possible outlier or sensor error, surrounding buoys recorded similarly high temperatures, with 99.3 F at Murray Key and 98.4 F at Johnson Key.
