Yeah ... I keep imagining this one for all of humanity.

One moment, we're having our usual run of the mill day, everything is either going good or going bad, we're all worried about the economy, billionaires flying around in their private jets, some poor kid is stealing oranges from the market, you're scrolling through some social media feed ... then BAMMMM!

Either one of two things happen to you.

You either get terribly unwell and die immediately or things fall apart around you, hurricane winds, things going crazy and then you die soon after.

Or

You're online and the internet goes screwy ... things aren't working right, then in an hour, most of the internet is gone. You turn on cable tv but most of the channels are now gone. You see one or two emergency channels and they're all talking about some 'event' that happened somewhere far away. Then most tv everywhere goes down too. There are rumours everywhere of Russians have launched nuclear weapons, world war three has started, aliens have landed, Jesus has come back, Armageddon has started ... and then hurricane force winds start blowing everywhere ... things are just tossed around and you either die in the mix or you are one of the lucky ones who happen to be underground ... you won't last a few days and then you die soon after anyway.

Random Gamma Ray Burst has directly hit the planet earth ... it irradiates half the planet where it hit head on, vapourizing the atmosphere and causing violent weather changes and the radiation either immediately killing or slowly sickening every living thing until it all dies including all animals, most fish near the surface, plants and humans ... the other half of the planet didn't get hit by the radiation but now survives just a little longer as half the planet tries to equalize with the other destroyed half.

It's theorized that this is one of the probable causes of several unexplained extinction events in earth's geologic history. And if it ever happened now, we'd have no warning ... and even if we did ... we wouldn't be able to do anything about it.

AFKBRBChocolate , in Caught on camera: Emergency slide falls from United plane, lands in backyard near O'Hare Airport

I love that they find a slide that dropped out of a plane, then shortly after they find a plane that’s missing its slide, and they say “it appears to be the slide in question.” Yeah, I’d say that’s a pretty good bet.

SheeEttin ,

I’m almost certain that any part large enough to be serialized is, so that it can be traced back to manufacture. They could definitely tell which plane that came from, and the serial number(s) of the missing slide. Bet you $5 they’re the same. (And any parts too small to be serialized are recorded in maintenance logs or something, and can still be traced.)

TerryMathews , in First US nuclear sub docks in South Korea since 1981

So first off, I don’t like the headline. All US subs are nuclear, but this feels like burying the story: parking an SSBN at South Korea is a very specific message. It carries 20 Trident II missiles, each capable of carry 8 475kt warheads (but likely only armed with 4 due to treaty limitations).

38 Megatons of independently targetable nuclear destruction.

That said, the story also talks about how this will drive KJU from the table - as if he was ever there in the first place. Given the state of their current activities, I don’t think reminding him that he’s fucking around with a country that worked out nuclear delivery via ICBM half a century ago is overly aggressive.

IMO, at some point, someone (and I’m not saying the US necessarily) is going to have to go in and depose the regime and integrate the population into modern society. North Korea is a bigger threat to world stability than Russia, and today that’s really saying something.

Russia may threaten and posture the use of nuclear weapons, and have started a losing war with their neighbor, but it’s far less likely that they would actually use the weapons. Even if Putin ordered it there’s a lot of people between him and the weapons that could prevent the use. He’s a dictator but barely, he needs to keep the oligarchs happy to keep his office, and the oligarchs don’t want to live out the rest of their lives in cramped bunkers in Siberia when the earth is irradiated. DPRK on the other hand is an actual dictatorship, with few people between Kim and a launch, and is actually unstable enough to do it. Also, with their carelessness around their “test launches” they’re much more likely to cause an international incident by dropping a half-fueled rocket stage on Japan.

    TerryMathews ,

At this point with Russia I’m more concerned with them causing an Ukrainian nuclear power plant to melt down.

    QuinceDaPence ,

Didn't the plants all get safely shut down before the Russians got there? If so, they can't cause a meltdown unless they actually try to start the reactors.

Not to say they can't cause something bad to happen, especially since they are storing munitions in there but it wouldn't be a meltdown. I would assume fuel material wouldn't get thrown as far/the core wouldn't be compromised but that would take someone more knowledgable than me on this.

    TerryMathews ,

Didn’t the plants all get safely shut down before the Russians got there? If so, they can’t cause a meltdown unless they actually try to start the reactors.

Are the shutdown? Yes. Safely? Definitely not. The type of reactor they are and the fuel they use, requires active cooling as it remains hot for years.

Zaporizhzhia is the plant in question, and it’s water supply is in jeopardy after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam.

With the plant not in active operation, it’s unlikely we’d see an incident on the level of Chernobyl but it’s far from safe.

    TerryMathews ,

How would you feel if you were a South Korean? Knowing that your brothers to the North want to kill or conquer you simply because they’re not happy with the half of the continent they chose because, ultimately, the US was a better development partner than Russia and China?

Bazzatron , in Teachers in England will have to tell parents if children question their gender

Ahh, more reasons for people to leave teaching.

Honestly, I think the only teachers I know that are still teachers today is because they’re under the thumb of this system - specialised training that isn’t much use elsewhere, so they have to stay and continue to work in increasingly impoverished conditions.

Any teachers reading this - I’m sorry for what you have to go through, and even as a childless individual, I am greatful for the sacrifices you’re making to ensure the future of our society.

    givesomefucks ,

You act like zero teachers agree with this shit…

That’s the point, run out anyone that’s not on the same “team”

PenguinJuice , in Teachers in England will have to tell parents if children question their gender

Can we just focus on education? I don't mind being against exclusion, discrimination or anything that would prevent someone from living their most fulfilling life... but these institutions are being unnecessarily focused on things that are maybe best left out of instruction.

    gmtom ,

That’s completely besides the point. Teachers are responsible for a child’s wellbeing when they are looking after them, and as part of that tbr child might bring that up to their teacher and the child should be able to trust in that teacher to keep it from parents who might react negatively to that news, much like you would a doctor.

This law doesn’t change the education the child receives it only serves to put trans kids at risk of abuse from their parents.

    admiralteal ,

Sounds like disingenuous braying to me.

Part of education, especially childhood education, has to be teaching children about the world they live in and how to navigate it. Which does mean that they need to be taught about tolerance and the differences between people. That's necessary for understanding and navigating the world they're entering. And teachers are there to guide them on that journey and keep them safe. To be an adult to whom they can ask questions without fear of reprisal. To be someone primarily interested in their success and not some other political goal.

Conservatives are the ones stepping into this process and interfering. Forbidding teachers to teach about the world. And forcing teachers to violate the confidence needed to keep children safe. Conservatives are the ones trying to replace education with a tool for indoctrination.

The only interpretation of a rule like the one in this article is that there is a belief that a child questioning their gender is equivalent to a child admitting to some kind of self-harm. It's pure bigotry and cruelty from people who know nothing and resist learning anything about the science and psychology of the subject. It is part of a genocidal agenda of demonizing and denying part of human identity. It is unacceptable. And worse, it's a violation of the fundamental relationship between the teacher and the student. It's interfering with and taking focus from education.

Be an ally of the human race or shut the fuck up.

    LadyAutumn ,

Its not possible to leave it out of instruction. The purpose of education (as it currently exists, and as they claim it to be) is to prepare children to function as adults in society. Some kids have racist parents, some kids have homophobic parents, some kids have misogynistic parents, some children are abused at home or are taught hatred and bigotry. The state has an obligation to advocate for the rights of children, because children are vulnerable and are not capable of removing themselves from an abusive home. Its the entire reason protective services exists in theory. Children are not possessions, you cannot just do whatever you want to your child, your child has the same fundamental human rights as any other human being. And like any other vulnerable human being, society has to ensure that the rights of children are being respected.

Children who are outted to their parents can face homelessness, abuse, psychological torture in conversion camps, ostracization from their friends and communities, isolation, manipulation, and bullying. It can end lives. Children can and do die because they are outted to their transphobic parents. As I said, society had a responsibility to ensure that the rights of children are being respected. The right to safety and security is one such right that is compromised by forcibly outting children to their parents. Educators should ALWAYS have to listen to the child and take no action without the permission of that child. Because children are people, and people are supposed to have rights. Children are not possessions of their parents, they are human beings who have fundamental rights the same as any other human being. The state should not be considering parents at all in this equation. The only person who needs to consider whether or not parents should know would be the children in question.

Children should also be taught about the existence of gay and trans people as part of regular education. The state has an obligation to provide proper education to everyone. Proper education should take steps to mitigate bigotry. Anti racism should be taught in schools, feminism and women’s rights should be taught in schools. It is much the same with gay and trans rights.

    lolcatnip ,

So you agree schools should focus on educating students rather than ratting them out to parents they don’t trust?

If someone is going to skip, they pay the 10% to a bondsman. So overtime bonds increased to 10x what they should be. Except now you don’t get anything back.

For most Americans it’s a flat fee to get out of jail.

Especially with how long cases go, not many can afford to wait a year for that money to come back after trial. Or to spend the year in jail waiting.
