ryathal , in WGA & SAG-AFTRA Join Labor Organizations Calling On California To Grant Unemployment Benefits To Striking Workers

Isn’t it the union’s job to have a fund for that? It’s been a long strike, but it’s been 15 years since the last writers strike, surely they amassed a good war chest for the strike.

captainlezbian ,

Strikes are historically short affairs and even then historically your strike fund contributions aren’t as high as 1/15th of your pay. That’s closer to the whole of your union dues (UAW was iirc an hour and a half a month when I was in it for everything). Union dues aren’t just strike fund, it’s wages for leadership too. Your leadership members work so many hours for the boss but another so many hours for the union and their pay is split between the two.

Then it’s unlikely that your strike fund is in a serious investment holding account. Those require you to hold your money in them for a certain amount of time or they’re volatile. You need to be ready to strike at a moment’s notice because the boss can fuck you over that fast. The point of this is to say that it’s unlikely it’s keeping up with inflation much less the rising rents of California and New York.

In an industrial union for example it’s unheard of to strike for that long because both sides are burning money during a strike. The difference is that here it’s tech companies who have an ideological opposition to unions and are willing to burn money left and right to not negotiate fairly with labor.

ryathal , (edited )

That’s a lot of words absolving union leadership of mismanagement. You can easily diversify accounts, you don’t need 100% of a strike fund in aggressive growth stocks or a savings account, you can have the majority in funds it takes a few weeks to convert to cash. This covers the incredibly rare surprise strike. A healthy strike fund is itself a weapon in a strike.

It’s not like the union should be surprised it’s taking a while, the last strike was also over 100 days. It also has nothing to do with tech companies willing to burn money. Long strikes for the entertainment industry are largely due to the production companies having completed products to make income for the first few months. Union leaders should understand the business they represent and act accordingly, the same rules won’t work for a steel mill and a movie producer.

Feared in the sense that we don't know. All this new information is coming from Russian State Media. Which is the equivalent of being informed of climate change on Fox News.

Even more bizarre, he was seen in Africa seemingly advertising his unit for the conflict developing in the region.

So how did he suddenly end up in Moscow? The place he had to negotiate to flee from only 2 months ago?

I wonder if they included the bible, koran and torah since they cite sexual content and much worse.

charles ,

I see this commented a lot, and I don’t get what the idea is. Are the expected outcomes:

  • They will get Gotcha’d so hard they see the error of their ways?
  • They will get the Bible removed from schools and lead a consistent crusade against anything sexual?
  • They will just keep the Bible and ignore the hypocrisy?

Never underestimate the capacity for Republicans to remain willfully hypocritical. It’s literally the foundation of today’s Supreme Court.

Exactly this. You want to ban because of content you don’t like, well you don’t get to cherry pick. The content is or isn’t what it is. They learned that.

    charles ,

Did they learn it? A Republican would eat their own shit if it meant a Democrat had to smell it on their breath.

This is not leading to better policies. Just expanded bannings. The physical Bible doesn’t play a role in day to day schooling. But some of the banned books would make real differences to people. Republicans lose nothing here, in fact they’re getting vocal support for more bannings from people on the left.

    WindyRebel ,

I see your point, but I offer this:

This happened in a school, but it could happen at a higher level too. If it truly didn’t affect them that much in day to day schooling, then why the reversal at the school level after this ban went into place?

    My thoughts:

It sent a message and despite them not wanting to admit it, they know deep down that the same bullshit hate they are spewing can be used against them at a content level. It didn’t change their minds on how they feel about the issues - no, that will never happen but perhaps it’ll curb some frivolous grass root efforts when the logic is applied to them.

    PebbleGamer ,

This article only mentions that the school district reversed the ban on the Bible because it “has significant, serious value for minors which outweighs the violent or vulgar content it contains.” It does not indicate that the banning process was removed altogether, or that any other books were unbanned.

    charles ,

This is exactly my point. They don’t care about being hypocritical, they’ll update laws to be explicitly and overtly hypocritical to get their way. This gotcha means nothing to them.

    GCanuck ,

It’s not an argument made to convince the opponent, rather it’s a comment to highlight the oppositions glaring hypocrisy and bigotry.

    charles ,

    Right. They don’t care.

MacGuffin94 , in What Just Happened at West Virginia University Should Worry All of Us

I’m going to be honest, I don’t care. This is what WV voted for. And not some 51-55% of people. It’s like 60-70%+of the view that the politicians putting in these policies received. WV has nothing going for it now that global warming is going to get rid of the coal industry eventually. They (the politicians and corporations) haven’t looked to diversify the economy. The state is bottom 10 at least in terms of education, poverty, and standard of living. The state is going to die slowly and painfully just like so many deep red states.

    Schroed4 ,

I agree with you and also am disappointed with how the article abuses language. This is in no way shape or form something that should be called Gerymandering, and to do so confuses a word that really deserves to not be abused.

    dethb0y ,

I think a lot of people have never met people actually from WVa, but I have - i have lived near the state my entire life. There is no one more ignorant, backwards, than the average West Virginian. They simply do not care: about the future, about what anyone thinks of them, about repercussions for their actions.

It’s really hard to believe if you haven’t experienced it first hand.

Anyone who feels differently or does not fit in - leaves as soon as they are able to, because literally anywhere else is likely to have more opportunities for actual job growth and careers.

mihnt , in Georgia school district is banning books, citing sexual content, after firing a teacher
    @mihnt@kbin.social avatar

I'm from that county and spent most of my childhood in that district. Not really surprising, tbh. Had a biology teacher in high school that was a staunch creationist and refused to teach anything other than what aligned with his beliefs. Failed that class pretty hard. Which started a snowball effect which lead to me quitting high school. The only class that I had that I felt comfortable in was art and that's because the curriculum wasn't laced with religious doctrine.
