To have any hope of meeting the central goal of the Paris Agreement, which is to limit global warming to 2°C or less, our carbon emissions must be reduced considerably, including those coming from agriculture. Clark et al. show that even if fossil fuel emissions were eliminated immediately, emissions from the global food system alone would make it impossible to limit warming to 1.5°C and difficult even to realize the 2°C target. Thus, major changes in how food is produced are needed if we want to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

RobBanks ,
@RobBanks@sh.itjust.works avatar

estation, which release carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O); production and use of fertilizers and other agrichemicals, which emit CO2, N2O, and methane (CH4); enteric fermentation during the production of ruminants (cows, sheep, and goats), which emits CH4; production of rice in paddies, which emits CH4; livestock manure, which emits N2O and CH4; and combustion of fossil fuels in food production and supply chains, which emits CO2. In total, global food system emissions averaged ~16 billion tonnes (Gt) CO2 equivalents year−1 from 2012 to 2017 (4).

Seems like going vegan wouldn’t help. Yours still have deforestation, fertilizer, rice paddies, and fossil fuels in production.

Vegoon ,

Plant based diets use 75% less land, less fertilizer, no manure which is destroying the water. With a plant rich diet we could reduce GHG from 1500 gt to 708.

I think you should re-read the paper.

RobBanks ,

Once the huge corporations do their part to stop killing the planet, I’ll consider going vegan. Until then I’ll put the pressure where it matters most.

Vegoon ,

Have you done your own research what matters most or do you go with science?

Malaysian here 👋🏻

Honestly we have been having such a hard time getting international acts to the country (we have religious radicals that ate strongly opposing these shows).

It was only recently with a tough government swap that things are starting to get better - things were starting to open up.

Less than half a year since things got better, this clown decided to run his mouth, insulting the government and fueling these religious radicals with more reasons shows should be banned.

Honestly, good fcking job, 2 steps forward, 1 step back. You fcked us all.

ForgetReddit ,

Two steps forward, one step back, so it’s a step forward, yet he “fucked you all”?

If one side is a bigoted regime and the other side is speaking out against them, and you’re against the side speaking out against them, what does that make you?

EhList ,
@EhList@lemmy.world avatar

Are you aware that Indonesia has a HUGE devout Muslim population? Odds are the majority aren’t supporting gay rights and the government reflects that.

Healy isn’t speaking out against that in a way that would be effective at changing hearts and minds.

Svart ,

Because nothing can change religious fanatics, especially those in positions of power. The only way would be for other countries to take actions against the nations with such backwards governments (trade bans etc.) but seeing as Turkey and Hungary are allowed to stay in the EU I’m not hopeful this will ever happen.

Maybe listen to people from the actual country that understand the political conditions? They know what is useful and what is not in their current situation better than you do.

This isn’t a game where shouting for one side the loudest and most often magically wins, unlike americans like to believe. Doing so at the wrong time gets you cracked down upon, or worse it gets lgbt people killed.

People from the west go to these countries and make these statements completely oblivious to the fact that they’re harming the local efforts of lgbt activists within the country who are acting more strategically with a better understanding of what will and will not advance their position in the current climate they have.

Here_in_Malaysia ,

timicin ,

history has proven that there is nothing you can do to please religious radicals and cow-towing to their demands will only backfire for you.

Here_in_Malaysia ,

People from the west don’t understand how much more different bringing progressive thought to SEA is. Nobody here really cares about listening to the people who are actually affected. You can’t burst in with freedom flags. We don’t have that kind of freedom of speech. Don’t provoke them into taking my freedom away.

Here’s hoping the gov forgets this and moves on instead of putting down any dangerous laws.

Here_in_Malaysia ,

I wanted to reply to you but the thread is hidden. I just wanted to say that I had hopes that the smaller audience could detect nuance but clearly Lemmy people are as arrogant as Reddit.

Thanks 1975 for bringing to light that Malaysia should be ashamed about being backwards. But a lot of people will suddenly feel they need to vote Malay-first parties when they didn’t before, because politics literally forgot LGBTQ+ exists. Malays-first parties is like Whites-first groups, to you who look at us like we’re minority creatures squabbling over words.

I hope the government continues eating nasi lemak and sleeping during parliament. Their laziness will be very useful here. Although it would be nice if one of them says something like “People are people”. 1 Malaysia should include LGBTQ+. Here’s hoping, anyway.

Bardfinn , in ‘There’s nothing American about promoting violence’: country star Jason Aldean criticised for anti-protest song

For those unaware — or who don’t keep up —

Jason Aldean is also the one who sang that “transgender people is not a real ontological category” — which, if you know biology and you know history, is an exact quote from the Nazis, who built the genocide of millions out of the notion of “Entarte” — usually translated to English as “Degenerate” but which literally translates as “without ontological category”.

He openly called for genocide of transgender people. Conservatives ate it up.

He and his record label and fans are all a part of a violent extremist hate group.

shalafi ,

I’ve read the lyrics and listened to the song. What are you on about? Is it not enough to merely recognize the song (and the video’s setting and content!?) as racist? Are the dog whistles so lowkey that you have to make shit up?

I’m guessing Jason Aldean has never pronounced the word “ontological” or “entarte”, let alone sang it. Just how smart are you saying this guy is?

ZombieTheZombieCat ,

Nobody is calling to exterminate anybody, because the other problem with that statement is that transgender people is not a real ontological category — it’s not a legitimate category of being,” Knowles continued. “There are people who think that they are the wrong sex, but they are mistaken. They’re laboring under a delusion. And so we need to correct that delusion.”

It looks like it was some doucher from the Daily Wire during a speech at CPAC, but it was in response to Aldean’s comment of literally “eradicating transgenderism.”

Idk, close enough. If it walks like a nazi and talks like a nazi, then it’s probably a nazi.

orrk ,

you can’t say that! something something the left always accuses me of being a Nazi for disagreeing with them, all I want to do is lynch N******, T*********, and F***!

did I forget anything of the new standard fascist playbook?

Chalky_Pockets ,

Just curious, do you feel triggered by Aldean being called out because you like bigotry, or do you just have really shitty taste in music and the delusion that your favorite cuntry star must be a good person?

shalafi ,

triggered by Aldean being called out

What in the world on you on about? Never heard his name until this shit came up. The only country I listen to is much older stuff, I have no awareness of modern country, at all.

We’re talking about an in-your-face racist song, and now suddenly it’s about trans folks?! The trans community is trod upon quite well enough with finding digs on them where it doesn’t exist.

safetyvestcoloredcat ,

They’re right, though. If you search for “Aldean ontological” the only result you’ll get with both words is this very thread. I don’t see anything fascist about correcting a factual error.

    shalafi ,

LOL, wasn’t so much correcting an error as pointing out that these idiots are giving WAY too much credit to a country star.

I cannot seem to find a quote from either nazis or aldean yet you used exact and stated things quite confidently

Advice that goes back millenia, Aesop’s Fable The Oak Tree and the Reed. Similarly…the smartest guys that really care about their trucks keep them clean. Clean trucks last so much longer, and better; dirt & salt & even bird shit can lead to corrosion.

I know plenty of country folk with a rust bucket truck & they’re happy. If it runs, whatever. Or they run vehicles around in the woods after dark & I see them posting like HAHA I broke down or got stuck!! What a CRAZY, fun adventure I’m on! You’d hear about the son of this senator or that congressman who was given a deferment from the military or a choice position in the military. They seemed privileged and whether they liked it or not, these people were symbolic in the sense that they weren’t being touched by what their parents were doing. They weren’t being affected like the rest of us.

In point of fact, when Fogerty found out that Trump was using his song, he issued a cease and desist order.
