negativenull , (edited ) in Michael Gambon, 'Harry Potter' actor who played Dumbledore, dies at 82

He was amazing in Gosford Park (2001). It’s sad it’s such a little known movie.
Michael Gambon

gregorum ,

I adore that film. It was the template for Downton Abbey, created by the writer of Gosford Park.

negativenull ,

Julian Fellowes!

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It’s weird, I thought there were a ton of great performances in that movie, and yet I really didn’t like it at all. I’ve even watched it twice because I thought maybe I missed something the first time, but nope.

He’s terrific in it though.

negativenull ,

It does have a weird vibe to it, I’ll admit. I do love it myself though.

Tatters ,

It goes against the usual, overly romanticised trope for Country House dramas, to be much more gritty and seedy. I like it. Lots of cameos too, a real ensemble piece.

kaitco ,

It’s strange that it’s not as well known given that it was Julian Fellowes’ proto-Downton Abbey. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time and it’s like a who’s-who of the best of British actors.

negativenull ,

The cast is absolute dynamite. It’s one of my vary favorite as well.

tallwookie , in ‘Unprecedented’ theft contributed to $112 billion in retail losses last year

insufficient investment in loss prevention will do that

newthrowaway20 ,

Inflation will do that. As BeefPiano put it,

In 2017 shrinkage accounted for $42 Billion, or 1.85% of sales.

that shows how crazy inflation is - $42 Billion was 1.85% then and $113 Billion is 1.6% now.

astrsk ,
@astrsk@artemis.camp avatar

Exactly right. No amount of loss prevention investment will make up for a broken and damaged economy.

It's odd. I still remember the days of memes labelling Twitter as the home of left-leaning activists, but now it's slowly becoming just a better funded truth social

SSUPII , in Germany bans far-right group that tried to indoctrinate children with Nazi ideology

I seriously wonder what drives these lunatics.

WhatAmLemmy ,

Hate and fear of the unknown is the driving force behind conservative voters; greed for the political class.

hh93 ,

Also the subconcious knowledge that they are where they are because their ancestors exploited other humans and the only way to not feel guilty about that is by continuing to see those other humans as “lesser” than them so it was okay what there ancestors did so it’s also fine if they are doing it

because once you accept that your country is as wealthy as it is because of exploitation you have to decide if you are going to keep your lifestyle and continue that exploitation or if you are realizing that something like that is unacceptable and that that means that you likely have to cut down your lifestyle a bit

conservatives are all about “nothing should change” but that fundamentally means continuing the exploitation and if you are aware of that and want to stay conservative then the road to racism is very short

UnknownQuantity ,

It’s the tradition silly. They just want the good old days. They’re just conservatives.

Why were there only 22 nazis on trial in Nuremberg? Because the dock could only fit 22 people. How did the denazification go? Of the 1.3million nazis to be prosecuted it was only a fraction of a fraction. Germany now is not what it used to be then, but there are ‘conservatives’ among the good German people.

idiomaddict ,

I’m an immigrant in Germany. I’m fair skinned, tall, and I speak German pretty well. The number of times I’ve been told that I’m not an immigrant is insane. “Immigrants” include people with Turkish names whose families have lived in Germany for four generations, but not me, who doesn’t even have permanent residency yet.

Until Musk decides to play with the service? Based on his own ideas of how to play God in the war? CNN: Musk turned off Starlink near Crimea to disrupt Ukraine’s strike against Russian fleet

Fredselfish ,
@Fredselfish@lemmy.world avatar

Our government shouldn’t be rewarded him shit and we should seize it and nationalize all his companies. After all our taxes subsidized it to begin with.

agitatedpotato ,

Maybe it’s a trap. Perhaps its harder to punish musk for his Ukraine shortcomings, but if he decideds to fuck up under federal contract with the MIC of the US government . . .

I only think of this because I cant imagine the pentagon thinks highly of him, hes a borderline (possibly unwitting) russian apologist at best and asset at worst. Usually Im not so sure bad things happen to rich people, but crossing the MIC would probably be the line that does it if anything does.

Draegur ,

I’m sure the US government would love nothing more than to smash musk open like a piggy bank and annex everything he owns through some mix of civil asset forfeiture and eminent domain on sloppily and carelessly assembled rhetorical basis that boils down to “because we say so,” and also “what are you going to do about it anyway loser, we have nukes” plus furthermore “you can’t possibly pretend like this dipshit didn’t have it coming. If one does not wish to find out, one should not fuck around”

NOT_RICK ,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

They don’t need to make up a basis to take over his stuff, it already exists and has existed for almost 75 years. They’d just tie his hands with the defense production act if push came to shove. They could then just lock Elon up if he refused to do what he was told.

Wooster ,
@Wooster@startrek.website avatar

That kinda makes sense.

Sanctions only work because of pre-existing trade with unscrupulous powers. Similar logic.

dangblingus ,

He’s an intentional Russia apologist. Period. You don’t get to be the richest person on Earth and not be invited to a few private meetings with international leaders. He regularly promotes the idea that Ukraine is evil and Russia is doing good on Twitter.

agitatedpotato ,

I have a conspiracy theory that Musk utilized Russian troll farms to hype up his pump and dump scheems when those were his big thing. That would explain the meetings with Putin, the proclivity to do what Putin says, and his purchase of twitter under the guise of removing the bots and free speech then not removing the bots. He probably just removed the evidence.

Do you mean this?

A collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) leads to global cooling through fast feedbacks that selectively amplify the response in the Northern Hemisphere.

www.nature.com/articles/srep14877

JasSmith ,

So now we have global cooling to look forward to?

throws_lemy OP ,
@throws_lemy@lemmy.nz avatar

I’m not good at explaining this, here’s the science on climate change

Climate change and the developments it spurs carry the narrative of the Quaternary, the most recent 2.6 million years of Earth’s history. Glaciers advance from the Poles and then retreat, carving and molding the land with each pulse. Sea levels fall and rise with each period of freezing and thawing. Some mammals get massive, grow furry coats, and then disappear. Humans evolve to their modern form, traipse around the globe, and make a mark on just about every Earth system, including the climate.

www.nationalgeographic.com/science/…/quaternary

dangblingus ,

If there’s an AMOC collapse, one of the likely outcomes is literally The Day After Tomorrow. The science in that movie is surprisingly grounded in reality.

LibertyLizard ,

Not even remotely accurate. It would cause notable changes and likely widespread famine but not anything as instantly apocalyptic as the film. Temperatures wouldn’t change dramatically aside from Northern Europe. The gulf stream’s effect on temperatures is smaller than people think.

The bigger change globally speaking would be shifting precipitation patterns. This could lead to dramatic aridification of parts of Africa and India, and large increase in precipitation in North America. But it’s not going to trigger some kind of hemispheric ice age as depicted in the film.

He was in the best Doctor Who Christmas Special

CitizenKong ,

And he was so much better there than in Harry Potter too. Either he didn’t like that role or he got bad direction.

Smith seriously had the best specials, and A Christmas Carol is so great. Gambon did a fantastic job in the episode.

Overzeetop , in U.S. Senate unanimously passes formal dress code after uproar
@Overzeetop@kbin.social avatar

And the penalty is what - a letter in your personal file? A fine (and to be paid by whom, if paid at all)? A physical removal from the space (and, again, by whom)? DJT and the modern GOP have shown that laws written concerning the presidency, congress, and the supreme court have no teeth whatsoever. Even congressional subpoenas and perjury no longer have any meaning as long as you're willing to ignore or flaunt them.

I actually agree with the desire for at least a minimum of decorum in the chambers, but the whole process is stupid to the extreme.

Salamendacious OP ,
@Salamendacious@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a really good question as to what the penalties would be. Any removal wound probably be done by the Senate Sargeant at arms who is Karen Gibson and/or her staff. I agree that there should be some general minimum standard. But listing the articles of required clothing seems silly.
