I liked it better when I thought they were welcome the sub/dom community, but I’m also for collective action and worker’s rights. Both are good. Just one felt a bit more fun.

Organize, people. It works.

People saying ai, maybe, but they make molds which radishes etc. are grown in and sold as a novelty in China and maybe other places.

mugthol , in Turnip legs.

This looks like AI, too many details in the toes, rest of the foot, legs and knees. It would be a wonder to find one such turnip, let alone a matching one

Funkytom467 ,

It’s too good for AI, but photoshop, maybe AI in photoshop idk…

mugthol ,

Yeah, photoshop is also possible, but I think a human would have tried to make it at least believable (no nails on the toes for example)

wjrii ,

I wonder if this an evolution of the square watermelons known in Japan.

mugthol ,

I doubt you could make it have this level of details and I think that technique cannot be used for stuff that is grown in the soil

wjrii ,

You’re probably right, and this in particular seems to be a sculpture with a turnip plant glued on top, per @Tolookah

lolrightythen ,

That def makes the most sense aside from Photoshop or AI.

I don’t know much about growing produce, but I’d think making a mold for something that grows underground would be more difficult than something that grows on top of the soil.

*My bad- should have read previous comments closer. Good convo yall

It has the correct number of toes so not AI.

Mr_Wobble , in Turnip legs.

In the year 2024, with AI and Photoshop so prevalent, and without any supporting info even suggesting legitimacy, this isn’t even mildly interesting.

Tolookah ,

Looking it up, it turns out it’s an actual turnip, carved to look like this.

I stand corrected! Thank you for looking up and finding that interesting context.

Not trying to downplay how cool the piece is, but the artists website says it’s acrylic urethane with real Daikon leaves:

It’s still a really cool piece of art! Their other works are really fascinating and well-executed too - I especially like the kiwi with the hairy butthole and the… uh… scrotumfruit?

Looks a lot like my 3d scanner / Like an Xbox Kinect / Apple Face ID. On a ticket machine That’s just creepy.

mojofrododojo ,

yep, structured images are projected, then left right cameras capture images, the device compares the differences in each image and can use that to build a rough 3d model of the face. I strongly suspect these are used to make sure people aren’t using printed images to spoof the verification - but never put it past the state to horde data and hoover up everything they can.

Often these are used for liveness detection, to make sure it’s a real person’s face and not a picture.

This is an ICM Self Check In Kiosk, which features a “passenger feedback camera” and offers “a single token end to end processing experience”.

Basically exactly what you think it is, an advanced biometric system for reading your face. I don’t think airports have it activated yet, but maybe one day you’ll be able to check in without scanning a boarding pass or passport for the low price of your privacy.

dustyData ,

Some like these are active at Bogotá’s airport, in Colombia. The kiosk screen asks you to look straight at the camera placing your feet on specific spots in front of the kiosk for alignment. Then it shows how it is comparing your face with the picture on the passport.

It is really creepy.

pikmeir ,

I’ve used one of those before at an airport and it worked exactly as you say. I think it was just for boarding though. I just walked forward and when I got to the front, they greeted me by name and I got on the plane. I don’t remember having to show my passport or boarding pass that time either (but it was last year so I may have forgotten).

CaptDust ,

Since it needs a source to compare against, I’m curious where they captured your face info

The nexus machines in several airports have scanners like this and I can just walk up to it, look at it, and keep walking. No giving it my ID or anything like that.

AdrianTheFrog OP ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, it was like a boarding pass printing machine though, which seems like a weird use. You still had to get the pass scanned later.

OldManBOMBIN , in RealSense depth camera in ticket machines

Probably just an advanced form of identity protection. There’s nothing to see here folks. Nooope, just good, old-fashioned, freedom with security. Yep. That’s all. Definitely not getting 3d scanned and stored digitally for some hedonistic billionaire’s personal bio-lifedoll library, which they totally don’t use to fake your death if you go against the agenda- that doesn’t exist. Hey, have you seen this? Pretty neat, right?

neidu2 , in My Hotel Has An Adaptive Outlet

I’ve used that type you see on the left there. They’re awful and dangerous.

It’s better to bring an adapter specifically made for the plug you have and the sockets where you’re headed.

When flat They’re mostly fine, but those “universal” ones have so little grip in them to cater to all plug types, that when wall mounted, the plug usually is left hanging half-inserted, exposing the live conductors.

TechNerdWizard42 ,

Or more likely, the ones you used had been worn.

Universal sockets are the norm in many places now. I have every outlet with universal. They grip stronger than a standard American outlet and have tamper resistance. But like any receptical they wear out and are only good for so many insertions. If you use G type plugs they seemingly last forever.

neidu2 ,

Nope. Brand new. Several of them.

Also, the US connector doesn’t grip very well to begin with.

I mostly use F or E, plus the occasional A.

TechNerdWizard42 ,

Then you’re buying shit.

I use universal with everything and they grip way stronger than default US outlets. Just a fact. Never have a plug hanging out. Works with grounded and ungrounded. I even replaced every outlet in a few of my US houses with universal, they are that awesome. No issues for many years, at least 15 now, with various inputs including well used ones in a kitchen for example with appliances being plugged and unplugged all the time.

Literally the only thing I like a US plug and socket for, are extension cords. The 5-15 is a great option for a long run. Don’t need a book sized receptacle on one end or a giant cylindrical twisty lock to power a 20W load somewhere.

Zahille7 OP ,

Why does every hotel ever have those stupid loose plugs? If you sneeze right it’ll just fall out.

noobnarski ,

They also allow you to plug in a grounded Schuko Plug (Its the german one) without connecting the earth, cant get much more dangerous than that. I think the french plug also can be plugged in but it doesnt connect the earth either.
