grrgyle ,

Genuine question, because I don’t have a confidant that I can comfortably ask this to, is that the general opinion of people with disabilities?

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I am not a spokesperson for all disabled people, nor are we a monolith, but yes, it is the correct term, and enough disabled people care that there have been several campaigns and there are probably thousands of articles and other pieces of media discussing why it’s important people . Look that hashtag up to find this content, here are a couple of examples:

creativeconnector.art/why-its-so-important-to-say…

You might also benefit from reading through this: www.drakemusic.org/…/understanding-disability/

grrgyle ,

Thanks for the links. I will read them. I’ll admit that my first reaction is to assume that speaking directly is rude, but I’m ready to do some unlearning.

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

You’re welcome.

I think why you think “disabled” is rude is the thing to focus on (and the answer very briefly is because you, we all, were socialised to think that way).

I’ll just drop this link in too, I think intersectionality is vital, and understanding how systems of oppression stand alone and interact with each other is vital to unlearning them, and I think this is a good starting point that goes in to several: www.yorku.ca/edu/…/systems-of-oppression/

grrgyle , (edited )

This resource is dropping woke bombs left and right (I’m into it). Extremely rich text.

… societal interpretations of and responses to specific differences from the normed body are what signify a dis/ability.

Not to glom onto this one pat definition, but it’s one of the many paragraphs that jumped out at me.

I still haven’t got to any part that is specifically challenging using “polite” language when speaking to disabled people about their disabilities. But with your question about why I might consider the term disabled a slur, and these links, I think I’m getting there…

EDIT: uhhhh nvm, the paragraph literally after the one I quoted goes into it, very specifically.

Some advocate for People-first language (a person living with disability), while many disability activists advocate for identity-first language (a disabled person).

DessertStorms , (edited )
@DessertStorms@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’m glad you’re finding the info helpful and insightful.

I think with regards to use of language, this is another good read (E: also the understanding-disability link I attached earlier will will probably help with the “why” behind thinking “disabled” is a slur). It might be coming at this from a slightly different angle, but I think the point still stands - “politeness”, “offence”, “political correctness” these are terms most often used by the privileged to police the speech of and control marginalised people (aka “respectability politics”), rather than the other way around, but I might be digressing a little at this point lol…

grrgyle , (edited )

I mean it’s getting more academic for sure, but I think I get you - that’s one of them there intersections you were talking about (neoliberalism x ableism, maybe (to name just 2 anyway)).

EDIT thank you, that was fire. A cogent and succinct breakdown of offense vis a vis harm.

I don’t feel like I learned anything, because what I learned seems obvious (now), but if I think about my previous statements in this thread about rudeness they feel like they were made by someone else, so I guess this reading is doing something!

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

We’re all learning, all of the time, being open to it just makes it more interesting!

I’m glad we’ve had this exchange, it’s honestly been really refreshing.

jaagruk ,

Hmm, I thought showing respect could be better.

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

That’s the fucking point - there is nothing disrespectful about the word disabled, while there definitely is a lot of disrespect in using bullshit euphemisms like the one you used. The fact that you’re arguing back rather than listen and try to do better proves that you don’t care about respecting disabled people at all, but only about making yourself comfortable.

Feel free to read the links I shared with the person bellow if you actually want to start showing respect to disabled people. Either way, I’m done here.

jaagruk ,

Okay brother let’s fix it up. Basically I had heard that those words are more respectful so I used them I didn’t had any intention to show me in good light. I totally respect but I replied to tell what was my point. As English is not my first language probably u concluded something I didn’t intended. Still apology for all misbehaviour I did.

Have a good life brother.

I only do google rewards, but that’s generally how I pay for any new apps I want.

My phone. HeyPiggy, Five Surveys, and Qmee apps are the best. I’ve made about 5K in three years, this is Qmee alone. It’s a grind but I’ve really made lots of cash. I went through my Amazon account one day and discovered I’ve bought 117 items with my survey cash.

Smartphones are just boring little tools guys. Don’t make it your life. Be a real nerd, get a PC, and surf the web where there are no limitations set by apps. Play some video games, look at porn sites, do some online shopping or whatever. If you’re done with all that, go outside and ride a bike or something.

Alright so let me begin,

BlastboomStrice OP ,
@BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz avatar

I’m just checking my social media apps for any new messages and maybe droify for updates. After checking them in the morning I kinda think to myself that now job is done and any more time I spend of my morning on them is kinda wasted. Checking social media from time to time and speaking with your friends seems kinda healthy, but doomscrolling is kind of a waste after a point (happens if I’m too bored to start my day).

The thing is, after I check all these, I might go in a loop due to boredom (boredom may have many many reasons behind it). When I have tasks to do or I’m in a period that my friends and I are busy, this is more intense. The phone is an easy and portable distraction. All these contribute to an increase of phone usage (currently I’m in one of those situations and phone usage has increased probably by at least 50%).

SubArcticTundra ,

I had to move to a country with a more introverted culture than the one I grew up in (not the US), and I’ve struggled finding friends to spend my free time with so far, so I spend it on apps :-( They really are just a last resort and I’d much rather spend my time with actual people like in the olden days :-/

BlastboomStrice OP ,
@BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz avatar

Awww, hope you make it eventually

SubArcticTundra ,

Thank you, I’m trying to make it work out

Num10ck ,

sign up for a class/activity, wear a conversation piece.

BlastboomStrice OP ,
@BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz avatar

Smart move the latter, ~didn’t think it.

About the former, I recently realized in practice that it’s important to pick up activities etc. that you like and that attract people you can bond with. For example I like weightlefting at gym, but I realized it attracts so many people with repulsive ideologies, while I tried dancing and mobility classes the same gym offers and the environment was much much better, I found many good people there. (I still do weightlifting though and I found some good people there too.)

Plus, voicing your opinions helps a lot to filter people (I’m struggling a lot with this though).

grrgyle ,

Plus, voicing your opinions helps a lot to filter people (I’m struggling a lot with this though).

This is massive. “Filtering” is the perfect way to put it. If you don’t risk saying something potentially disagreeable, then no one will ever know who you are.

That goes for both repulsive and inclusive ideologies, I guess, but I definitely prefer the latter (this is an example of one of your “filtering” statements - now spectators to this conversation know I value inclusivity).

PrimeMinisterKeyes ,

Join some Whatsapp group that piques your interest and meet with them IRL. I wouldn’t have thought that drinking beer and shooting the shit with total strangers could be so much fun, but here we are.

SubArcticTundra ,

Wistful ,
@Wistful@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Everything else requires effort.

SubArcticTundra ,

Yes. I think what makes these apps appealing is that 1) they can be used unplanned and your time in them doesnt have to be structured, and 2) they can fill up an arbitrarily long or short amount of time.

grrgyle ,

Hmm that is a very good description of how I use social media. Fill up unstructured downtime, or to bridge a gap between two other activities (god forbid I go thirty whole minutes without stimulation lol)

Then sometimes just hours and I come out of it feeling like total trash

Psychodelic ,

I think a lot of it is a result of our capitalistic society squeezing as much as it can from us for profit

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

When I was a kid, I used to play video games while jumping around. I’d stand in front of the TV, bounce around, play Mario, run in circles. My parents didn’t care.

At some point, society said that was weird, and I had a gaming chair?

Watching myself balloon (and already using a standing desk for work) went back to standing while playing video games. I enjoy it!

Klear ,

SubArcticTundra ,

That sucks. I titally sympathize with the no third places thing. Have you tried one-off workshop events and canteens? Also volunteering

grrgyle ,

Condolences. I’ve taken to going to the coffee shop to meet my friend. Yeah it’s not free, but it’s cheap. For games, that’s a bit of a blindspot for me since I only play good games these days.

hypertown ,

Go for a walk, read a book, watch a movie, play a game it will make you feel so much better. Just remember to change activities every few hours. If you’re going to play games for 10h you are probably going to get bored of it way too quickly.

CyberMonkey404 ,

Go for a walk, read a book, watch a movie, play a game

I’d love to, but I’m at work. There’s a bit of a lull between the storms of activity atm, and I would absolutely love to not waste time with just being stuck in the office. But I can’t afford it

hypertown ,

I know how you feel man. I used to work in a job like that. Honestly what saved me was reading some comedy manga on mangadex. Since it didn’t require a lot of brainpower and I could just stop reading it whenever I wanted it was perfect for times like this. My head also was in a much better state than after scrolling back then reddit for hours. If you don’t like manga you could just find some easy book.

If you can’t go for a walk during work go before or after work. I try to cycle every day after work and it always makes me feel better.

CyberMonkey404 ,

Thanks for the kind words!

grrgyle ,

Can’t read a book at the office? Working through a book whenever the queue was empty was one of the few pleasures of working retail/call centre

grrgyle ,
