Speaking of, a local Oriental store gives me a free bottle of oyster sauce when I buy $100 worth of groceries. I collected 5 bottles of oyster sauce before even finishing the first one and I tried offering them to my grandma but she said she had like ten bottles of oyster sauce too. The next time I went there I asked the clerk if they had anything other than oyster sauce, and they said “nope” and put another bottle of oyster sauce in my bag.
From the restaurant’s perspective I can kind of understand. They don’t want to serve you a meal that they suspect you won’t be able to eat because it’s a bad look for their business. And if you complain, being too spicy is also way harder to rectify than being not spicy enough so they play it safe initially. Though it obviously sucks if you’re specifically looking for spicy food.
This is why I advocate for chili oil, white pepper, and other condiments at the table or provided on request at Chinese restaurants. As a Chinese person who likes to fine tune the spice level of my food or change the spice level part way through. It also basically means the kitchen doesn’t really have to worry about if something is too mild in the same way they don’t have to worry if it’s not salty enough.
i can’t tell if i’m too old now or what but over the last year i’ve gotten insanely radicalized against corporatism and can’t stand seeing brand names anywhere. i remember sometimes i’d use them in normal posts, but reading others do it really makes it sound like an ad
How dare the public not want to hear about us stripping the rights of gays, and trans people? ECHO CHAMBER! I JUST WANT CIVIL DISCUSSION ABOUT HOW BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOTHING BUT THUGS AND RAPISTS AND THEY SHOULD GO BACK TO AFRICA.
How about no dude? Go back to Truth Social and rant there. Nobody wants to hear about your eugenics, how a female comic artist hurts your browsing experience and you're too contrarian not to spew misogynist rhetoric.
Progressives and most real moderates know better now. It's all bad-faith arguments and dog whistles. The paradox of tolerance is real and people need to stop platforming insanity.
That's what you plan to do on the internet all day? Just use buzzwords without understanding what they actually mean lol? Or do you genuinely believe that isn't the root of most right wing estranged, convoluted, self-deceptive arguments? Because the Republicans being elected have been saying the quiet part out loud for almost 8 years now.
Gish gallop! Fallacy fallacy! Sealioning!!! And no, citing multiple sources is not gish gallop. I've been hit with that accusation in a personal chat recently too lol.
Ehm… calm down, friend. You are reading quite a bunch into my post. It is exactly this stupid finger-pointing of 18-year old know-it-alls that ruins lemmy.
God nothing is more annoying than brain damaged American progressives who think they’re intellectuals. Even if we ignore your strawman, the very idea that there are people who are close minded enough to actually actively refuse to even be exposed to any ideas that they might dislike or disagree with is insane. Keep in mind, the tolerance paradox says that intolerant ideas shouldn’t be tolerated, it doesn’t say that you should go full 1984 censoring and controlling information and turning authoritarian on anything you deem intolerant. The whole point of the paradox is to demonstrate that if a society wants to remain free and democratic, then it needs to oppose intolerance and authoritarianism in all its forms… via democratic processes. Otherwise, it’s another society that has become corrupted. The principles of liberty and democracy, as well as their universality, should never be abandoned.
I hate you. I despise you so deeply that I will use all my capital to move the democratic process. I am going to use the freedom you have given me to manipulate everyone into thinking you are the scum of the earth, unworthy of existence. I will demonize your actions on every turn. I will destroy you, your culture, and your very existentce. I just have to yell it long and hard enough and people will flock to my voice that I have been given on your platforms. And you will do nothing about it, even when you manage to expose my lies. It is you that is the cause of all our problems we face. Soon enough people just repeat what I say and believe me over anything you might utter. I have just convinced people of what you truly are. And their vote will sign your death warrant.
My point still stands. You can’t use hate, ignorance, and authoritarianism to defeat hate, ignorance, and authoritarianism. The only thing that will end up happening is you turning hateful, ignorant, and authoritarian. We have already seen this happen time and time again. It’s time for people to learn from history for once instead of just repeating it. Censorship NEVER works, authoritarianism NEVER works. The very reason why the people you described ever get into power is because of people like you who fall into a brainless cycle of purity tests, arrogance, and exploitation of power. You want to see bigots stop being bigots? Try talking to them. Not talk down to them, not convince them of anything, just try to understand why they think the way they do, how they came to be, and how they perceive the world. By understanding them you can find some common ground and from there you can introduce to them alternative ideas like tolerance, justice, coexistence, and peace. You can’t ban bigots, you can’t censor them, you can’t genocide them, and no amount of power abused will make them go away. Talking them is the only way. Keep mind talking to them isn’t a sign of weakness or a concession. Virtue signaling means fuck all when it makes things worse. Talking to people, having them exposed to new ideas and views, and treating people you don’t like (even if they’re vile) as humans is how a black man in the US managed to convince dozens of KKK klansmen into giving up their robes.
Because those people who gave up their robes saw that they were misguided and were open to new ideas. But some still have kept their hearts closed because some are just unwilling to have their convictions changed. KKK is still a thing, after all that talking. Raceism is still an issue, even when we tried giving them space.
Sometimes it is more than misguidence. Sometimes people just hate, and grudge. And when these people are given power they are able to spread their hate and misguide once more. And then we might have another Nazi Germany, where it will take a war to have it corrected. We didn’t get the Nazi’s to stop with just words. Are we able to have China stop doing it now, with just words? Are words helping in Palestina?
And in this day and age of the internet, even when we show those people the world that they can access. Show them how misguided their hatred is. They still choose to hate.
These words I wrote are in their hearts. Outside they tell sweet veiled words like ‘we must protect our children’ and ‘they are taking your jobs’. They will convince people against all facts, that the others chose this. That something genetic, is chosen. Never will they tell in those clear words what they truly want, because any sane moral person would see it for what it is.
At some point they manage to convince their followers that they are the truth, that anyone trying to guide them away to sanity is lying to them. And then the cycle completes and new unchangable hate-ist is born to spread the infection. See anti-vaxxers, see Q, see any conspiracy group that convinces their members everyone else is lying.
So, would you rather have a tyranny where people are allowed to just be. But where ideas of raceism and exclusion is censored.
Or a tyranny of the hateful that will one day knock on your door for telling the lies of inclusion?
Unfortunately and admittedly, we are the problem. These companies know that people pay for convenience and stick to what they know. If we were less likely to do so companies would have to raise their standards. Take Twitter for example, even with Musks over inflated numbers other sources indicate there’s still hundreds of millions of Twitter users. They see all of the things Musk has done and it hasn’t buried his business thus they are now taking pages out of his book.
Blaming individuals for not performing collective consumerist acts against corporations is liberal bullshit that only excuses corporate wrongdoing.
EDIT: To spare other people from having to read the smug corpo clown buffoonery beneath this post, I’ll put the most relevant part I wanted to stress up here instead:
The eight hour day, the end of widescale child labor, the concept of minimum wage, and much more that improved the lot of the working class and of society as a whole were not the products of “vote with your wallet” nonsense. Slavery wasn’t abolished in the United States (it still isnt if you count the prison system, and you should, but stay with me here) by cotton buyers coming together to only buy “ethical” cotton.
It’s not liberal bs. It’s lazy thinking on your part and people are agreeing with you to shuck accountability. None of the services are essential services. We could easily drop them and it have nearly zero material impact on our lives. Spare me the BS. Just say you’re too lazy to pull away from comfort. People vote with their dollars all of the time. It’s also not liberal, there’s been conservative stances against businesses and corporations as well. As humans some of the biggest influences we have in society is our votes and our dollars. Quit being lazy and just state you’re fine with things as long as it doesn’t disrupt your comforts. That’s better than calling it “liberal”
No, blaming individuals for not coming together in some magical way and putting all the responsibility on them for what corporations do is your lazy thinking. Next you’ll say that blood diamonds are entirely the fault of people buying them and not the DeBeers corporation enforcing artificial scarcity with them while performing atrocities at the same time, with the implication that atrocities just happen until a magical moment that people stop buying the artificially scarce diamonds, and because that is materialistically highly unlikely in the present system, that just allows smuglords like you to shame the masses while at the same time feeling idealistically superior to them while doing nothing.
We
Stop saying “we.” You are licking the boot and blaming the masses for not being as enlightened as you so you can feel superior to them.
It’s not liberal then what do you call conservatives that make the same decisions? You’re just weak. I love how you gloss over the protections of your comforts. It’s not lazy thinking to hold businesses and government accountable. How tf do you think we do that? People have protested, use their votes and used their dollars. YOU are the lazy one. I’m glad we live in a different world because people and those that agree with you would still have us in the slave days and civil rights wouldn’t be fought for at all. You do understand it was peoples protests, voting and their dollars that forced many of the major movements of the world right? Not people just waiting for businesses and governments to magically do the right thing. Having people ban together despite their comforts is not magical nor lazy. You are just weird.
You’ve already showed your whole ass and at this point there’s no meaningful way to continue replying to you. Continue tooting your self-aggrandizing horn of self-superiority and roll around on a unicycle like the corpo clown that you are. 🤡
For anyone else reading this far, remember this: the eight hour day, the end of widescale child labor, the concept of minimum wage, and much more were not the products of the “vote with your wallet” masses-blaming clownishness you see above this post. Slavery wasn’t abolished in the United States (it still isnt if you count the prison system, and you should, but stay with me here) by cotton buyers coming together and only buying “ethical” cotton.
Agreed on convenience being enough for most people. Unity isn’t going anywhere. They are priced above Unreal now but they have the market share to justify it. There are a million other game engines with newer approaches than “coke and pepsi” but they take more work and there’s less community to pull from. There are just so many assets and abilities pre built in those game engines that allow a young developer to be productive. If you don’t need all of that then you have a wide pick of frameworks to apply your code chops to. I’d love for Godot to become Dr Pepper but it’s got a long way to go for even that slot. If unity had done this in a year or two from now it might be a different story but it takes a long time to reach a status like Blender, and even Blender isn’t the go-to for industry professionals. I love LibreOffice but I’ve never worked at a company that is willing to tolerate those little rough edges.
Twitter is still the centralized place for a mainstream figure/organization to engage from. They have all researched mastodon and the like, opened accounts, and can’t get the same engagement. It takes people more work to find their accounts in other places and most lay-users just aren’t going to put in the effort. They’re only in it for the lulz. This may reach a critical mass someday like with myspace but any alternative still needs a central point to funnel them to. Reddit doesn’t benefit from centralization the same way and I think Lemmy/ap will scratch the itch for major topics, but it’s still harder to grow smaller communities that aren’t risa.
Blizzard has been being blizzard for years, that’s not just a 2023 thing!
I wish it was different. We all hate nodding to authority. But there’s a certain momentum that carries with popularity and they can surf that on their enshittification for years to come.
I just think people shouldn’t be chided for doing what is convenient when so much of our economy is attention based. Kind of like hating the players instead of the game.
I once read a really great comment about the difference in how Europeans and Americans view freedom as a concept and it’s always stuck with me:
Europeans are mainly concerned with “freedom from”. Americans are mainly concerned with “freedom to”.
In other words, Europeans focus more on freedom from tyranny, oppression, injustice, etc., while Americans focus more on freedom to do things without the government telling then they can’t, like own guns and so forth.
I’ve been stuck on listening to various live versions of Comfortably Numb (e.g., Pulse, Live in Gdańsk, etc) just to find out which has the best solo because it’s lived rent free in my head for a quarter of a century
Speaking as a casual, non-musical person, I gotta stick to Pulse but, ironically, it goes beyond Gilmour’s solo: I think Rick Wright’s keyboard work added a richness to it that no one was able to match afterwards.
