Friend is trying to start a conversation and catch up, “Me” is being weirdly antisocial about the whole thing.

Like, if you dislike this person that much, tell them you don’t want to be their friend any more, instead of suffering inside at how much you hate interacting with them, and leading them on.

Portosian ,

That’s a weird take on this. Not liking or being good at small talk does not equate with disliking the person. It certainly doesn’t mean you “hate interacting with them”.

Kimano ,

Talking to a friend you haven’t seen in a while about what’s new in your life is basically the opposite of "small talk’. I can empathize with those kind of social interactions being hard for some people, but it’s a social skill that’s worth either practicing or finding alternative paths to accomplish if you want to make and keep friends.

aoidenpa ,

    I’m very socially awkward, I don’t understand the issue here. No one’s going to be mad at you for saying “Meh, not really, what about you?”

    Cabrio ,

    The expectation that the answer will change over time wears one down when it doesn’t.

    Kimano ,

    Sure, but I wouldn’t really find the process of starting the conversation to find that out “small talk”. Even if there’s not a lot new most of the time, to me small talk has to be the kind of banal and meaningless conversations that basically never lead into those ‘real’ ones. How’s the weather, what about that local sports team, did you see someone bought that house/building/store down the road, etc.

    I think the complicated thing is there are people you don’t really know, acquaintances, where the generic “how’s the wife and kids” is small talk, because they don’t actually really care, it’s just a generic greeting thing. But a friend asking that is different, imo.

    JohnDClay ,

    If it is small talk depends on your answers. If they are flippant like the examples given above, then they are small talk. But it can also give a jumping off point to talk about whatever you have on your mind.

    ArthurParkerhouse ,

    Just start with the topic you want to talk about. I would never message someone with small talk nonsense like “what’s up” or “how’s it going”, etc, etc.

    pixeltree ,

    Look small talk is all well and good but don’t keep pressing for info on what I’ve been up to because telling you all about how I’ve been spending most of my days as a puddle of self hatred on the couch doesn’t make for good small talk

    harmonea , (edited )

    weirdly antisocial

    Completely forgets (or ignores) the fact that some people just don't like their lives and avoiding thinking about it is what helps them get through the day. And that others legitimately have nothing new going on that they can discuss with those outside their inner circles. Like, I'm not going to tell someone I haven't seen in a couple years all about the adult novel I'm looking forward to releasing in December, or that time I moved and nothing about it went well to the point it was mildly traumatic, so yeah, they're going to get a "meh, not much. keeping busy. work and stuff. you?" at the most generous.

    nelly_man ,

    I think the “Me” was saying that they’ve done literally nothing new or interesting and has nothing to answer the question with. The distress is from thinking about how little they are doing and feeling pressure to admit that to their friend, transforming a light conversation to a heavy one.

    Johanno ,

    Problem is that if you intent to monetize it then you might “accidentally” make a good game that is installed a lot and maybe you charged 5$ upfront via steam. Now you come by the 200k$ threshold and have to pay steam 30% and assuming worst case you have 500k installs.

    Meaning you owe now unity 100k$.

    So 200k - 60(steam)-100k is 40k$

    You have now 40$ left to produce your game.

    Even worse. If you have now stopped selling the game due to reasons. People reinstalling it will cost you 20 Cent

    piecat ,

    So wait. If I bought a game they can just brick it down the road?

    Yokozuna ,

    Well yea, if you buy any digital game anywhere but GoG, I don’t know any others that have policies like theirs, you’re basically just renting it, you dont buy the game you just buy the license. GoG has a system set up to where you actually own the game, and if they went out of business tomorrow, you could still play your games fine.

    Let’s say you happen to buy a game or dlc off of a second-hand site and redeem it on steam, origin, or whatever launcher. You use it, and it works, and you play for a while, no problem. Well, if that key you bought is flagged for whatever reason, and the publishers of said game can decide to revoke the license you bought, and that’s a wrap. Because that’s all you’re buying, even straight from steam or anywhere else - just a license. I used the second-hand website as an example because it does happen there. I haven’t really heard anything happening on legit purchases straight from a vendor, but the legal wording is all there, and what I described is possible.

    eerongal ,
    @eerongal@ttrpg.network avatar

    $200k divided by $5 is 40,000 sales. You aren’t likely to have 500k installs from 40,000 sales…

    Promising a deal that includes citizenship, a house, a salary, and an administrative position to a Nazi scientist in exchange for their work and knowledge such that one’s country can gain ground in a cold war is absolutely fine. It’s absolutely totally fine.

    Following through with the deal after getting the goods from the Nazi is not. Shoot the Nazi. You always shoot the Nazi.

    Two war crimes dont make a right

    Skoobie ,
    @Skoobie@lemmy.film avatar

    I apologize if I’m misreading. Are you suggesting that it would be wrong to shoot a Nazi?

    DarkenLM ,

    I think many of the scientists weren't Nazis, but rather forced to work for the Nazis, fearing for their and their family's lives. I could be wrong though, it has been a while since I've investigated that matter.

    Skoobie ,
    @Skoobie@lemmy.film avatar

    To be frank, it would be hard to siphon out truth from fiction at this point from personal accounts. That said, of course I distinguish between a forced Nazi accomplice and a sympathizer. I am not suggesting that they should be treated the same. I am suggesting that the U.S. was so zealous in its efforts to defeat the Russians that it wasn’t making distinctions.

    kameecoding ,

    didn’t Hitler get the idea of concentration camps from the US?

    I think you are idolizing US in this a bit too much, they weren’t exactly much better than the nazis.

    I mean I know for sure Eugenics were a popular idea in the US during that time, PoC were treated terribly etc.

    collegefurtrader ,

    After promising safety in exchange for cooperation, and presumably without having convicted them of anything besides their former party affiliation?

    Skoobie ,
    @Skoobie@lemmy.film avatar

    Ah, now I will admit to there having been a potential nuance. I certainly would want a trial before an execution, for instance. But I also think it would be wrong to assume these scientists were completely morally innocent. Maybe I could be persuaded from my earlier opinion of “You always shoot a Nazi” but there needs to be something to show. A diary entry saying “I’m not sure about this Hitler fella.” Something.

    _iamnotcutoutforthis ,

    What you’re suggesting is stooping to the level of the nazi cruelty by a complete breach of agreement even after the other party has fulfilled their terms. Also what was that pathetic attempt at baiting the other guy by saying: “aRe yOu SuGgEsTiNg iT iS wRoNg tO sHoOt NaZiS?!!”. Like that wasn’t even the point of the other guy.
