No wonder piracy was so popular

noobdoomguy8658 ,

1999 piracy mostly consisted of paying for a pirated copy that someone decided to make profit off; most likely, they weren’t the person to make the (first!) copy, and they’re not even sure what’s on the thing they were selling you. It was mostly bootlegging.

grue ,

^ This guy was late to the Napster party.

TowardsTheFuture ,

Yeah I think maybe he meant before 1999. Before Napster(99)/limewire(2000)/morpheus(2001) pirating was bootlegged shit you paid (less) for. But yeah after 99 you got that shit for free on the internet.

ThirdWorldOrder ,

Most people were still buying CDs in 99. In ‘99, $10 for an album would have been a pretty sweet price. Tower Records, Best Buy cds were all like $17.99

TowardsTheFuture ,

Fair most CD’s I bought were like $13 I didn’t go to tower or best buy cuz nah

Confuzzeled ,

When I was a kid we still recorded stuff off the radio and copied our zx spectrum games on the family hi-fi. I’d say good times but it’s so much better now I can pirate everything in great quality from teh interwebs.

Selmafudd ,

My memory is a little fuzzy with dates but I’m pretty sure Napster was going full steam by '99 but even before that we used to trade mp3 files on mIRC or ICQ+CuteFTP, I had hundreds of albums I never paid for which I am still amazed I managed to do over a shared 56k connection

Getawombatupya ,

Like buying a game CD and a warez copy bypass and the crew doing an ASCII art walk through, bought for $5 from a classmate

Or shareware floppy disks with copyright bypass

squiblet ,
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

In the pre-Internet early 90s, CDs were $15-25 (with inflation, about $40 now)…. And for a lot of music, you had no way of hearing it first. Shoplifting was popular.

SternburgExport ,

At least later on a lot of shops had these listening stations.

7u5k3n ,

Man came here to say this… Hell I was in a class action lawsuit in the early 2000s because of CD pricing. billboard.com/…/cd-price-fixing-suit-settled-for-…

Shit was super expensive back in the day.

But as weird Al says… How else is he going to get a diamond encrusted swimming pool?

SeaJ , in Vegan food: The west vs India

Most vegans in the US do not eat food that mimics meat.

Most Western butt holes cannot handle Indian food that well. The couple times I went to Indian weddings, I was clamoring for anything that would not burn my butthole. The good combined with the ridiculous amount of alcohol made the toilets cry.

zalgotext ,

Try a fiber supplement. Or eating vegetables.

bane_killgrind ,

As a Canadian Caucasian I concur that we should all eat more vegetables.

SeaJ ,

The fiber is not the issue. I’m good on that. It was the spiciness that was the problem. I can handle a little bit of spice but there was pretty much no reprieve.

kameecoding ,

there are plenty of Indian recipes that’s not spicy.

but also it’s a good idea to just build a bit of spicy food tolerance.

pingveno ,

The problem is when someone else is deciding how spicy to make it.

TWeaK ,

You need to focus on the creamy, typically lighter colored curries. Butter chicken, korma, things like that.

RaoulDook ,

The anus has taste buds in it, so when it’s spicy enough going down it can be spicy again coming out haha.

But why the fuck are there taste buds in there?

craftyindividual ,

I’ll have you know our British digestive systems can handle almost anything from over 60 years of Indian, Pakistani, Carribbean and Mexican food. When Taco Bell arrived on our shores it was bland disappointment compared to existing burrito outlets, especially given all the hype that it apparently puts an American in the toilet for hours :(

wintrparkgrl ,
@wintrparkgrl@beehaw.org avatar

Thats from the meat quality, not the spicyness

craftyindividual ,

Yeah there’s a sad story about meat quality in the UK after a lot of morons initiated Brexit (goodbye EU food law)

wildginger ,

Taco bell gives you the shits because its poorly cooked meat with a lot of beans, not because the food is good or spicy

AA5B ,

I don’t know, that’s a stereotype that may not be true. I mean, I’ll also make fun of my culture’s lack of spice and spice tolerance, but I’m the opposite data point. I love spicy food, prepare very spicy food for my kids, and on my one trip to India had at least the spice tolerance of my Indian co-workers. We’re not all white bread and mayonnaise

wildginger ,

“spicy food” doesnt mean the same thing depending on cuisine. Different types of heat are used in different dishes.

I can eat mexican meals for days and have no issues, cholula and all.

Meanwhile mild indian is usually a treat that sets off a small bomb in my gut.

Also, people make fun of americans like we dont have fuckloads of hot sauce brands all over the place. We live next door to mexico, guys, we have plenty of spicy cuisine.

FunkyMonk , in The NYC subway banned dogs on trains unless they fit into a small bag, so this guy trained his Pitbull to sit in a small bag.

If I remember correctly in this particular case Alex Jones was right - which is a very very weird thing to write to be honest.

Here is a deep dive by Oki’s weird stories

and his Interview with Tyrone Hayes

I despise Alex Jones He is a sad fart of a human being and I hate that it seems in his career of obscene, hurtful and dumb conspiracy shit there is one thing that he got actually right. Apes on a typewriter.

JusticeForPorygon ,
@JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

He was kinda right. IIRC there was a study done that found that fluoride may have caused a slight increase in estrogen levels in male frogs, but I don’t think it was significant enough to effect their behavior

the_Coffin_Seller ,
@the_Coffin_Seller@lemmy.world avatar

You’re right I should have said there is only a small amount of truth in his comment. I remember watching oki’s deep dive and the beginning kinda stuck in my head where he himself said that he doesn’t like the fact alex jones was correct on something

Omega_Haxors ,

Fades ,

Perhaps they could sit down when it comes to killing innocent civvies and stick to military targets. I have always been outspoken in Palestine’s favor but lines were crossed and nobody should support it.

Omega_Haxors ,

Yep, mask right off.

rustycheesi3 ,
@rustycheesi3@lemmy.world avatar

i am not supporting it, but i have hard times defending israel either, both sides are an absolute shit show and have their reasons, but in my eyes, the palestines have a stronger claim to the land. then again, this whole war is based on religions, where i, as an atheist, have nothing to say at all, because without religions, there wouldnt be a claimable holy city and no war whos the truthful owner of it, it would just be another land.

ICastFist ,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

this whole war is based on religions

Not entirely, there is a lot of geopolitical power struggle there as well. Israel was born as a “western puppet” that soon grew and became “too important to abandon”. Without it, the arab nations would be more likely to ignore whatever the western powers demand, as they’d have a hard time reaching them. With Israel, it’s like a gun’s permanently pointed at them and “any funny business” against them means you also have to deal with USA

bigFab ,

Try attacking military bases and armored vehicles with fireworks.

Read about war history. Civilian strikes are usually countered with opposite civilian strikes.

Sunforged ,

Legitimatlly curious if 6 months has changed your perspective?

Gabu ,

Not at all. That was still the wrong moment to do it. NOW (and for the past few months, since Israel began its full-blown open genocide) is the right time.

Sunforged , (edited )

Hey thanks for the response.

Has your opinion of Isreal changed because of the last few months? If so has that changed how you view their actions in the past against the Palestinian people?

If the comparison of Russia in Ukraine to Isreal in Palestine was only made legitimate in the past few months, then how do you view the Nakba?

Gabu ,

Has your opinion of Isreal changed because of the last few months?

It changed insofar as going from “they’re a pretty horrible fascist society” to “they’re straight up Nazis”.

If so has that changed how you view their actions in the past against the Palestinian people?

Not really.

If the comparison of Russia in Ukraine to Isreal in Palestine was only made legitimate in the past few months […]

You’re commiting a fallacy, I believe and hope unintentionally. Israel has always been the aggressor, I’ve never contradicted that. However, defending a population associated with a vile terrorist group at a time said group has just attacked is simply bad politics - you’ll not get many allies and now your detractors have a concrete event to point towards when dismissing your position. At present, Israel has effectively admitted to wanting a genocide and Hamas has waved the white flag multiple times, so it’s the perfect moment, politically, to defend the Palestine.

TheDoozer ,

I’d say the bigger issue is if the manager fails to pay an employee for all hours worked (intentionally or accidentally), they don’t get to have cops called to arrest them, it’s on the employee to try to claw back their own money.

Wage theft is a far more significant issue than shoplifting but police, DAs, and legislators aren’t chomping at the bit to address that like they are shoplifting, which should tell you everything you need to know about who our “justice” system serves.

I love how everyone worships dogs. Most dogs I’ve met are exciting as fuck, they play constantly, run around everywhere and jump with you. I fully understand that this is a dog lover problem, but damn, dogs are special.

Kids are similar, they are exciting, dirty, loud, playful, etc… Again, this is usually due to being human.

Most dog owners and parents are probably having a great time being dog owners and parents.

Landlords do a lot! They own the house. They move your money from your account to their account. And once in a while, they spend some of your money on fixing the sink that you pay them to use.

Jamie ,

Better than the neighbors from where I grew up turning their land into two big trailer parks.

It used to be a nice little place, just out of town right off the main road. We never even really had to lock our doors. Later on, shitheads from the trailer parks would break in, steal anything not nailed down, made the whole area crap.

One of the landlords had their house broken into when she was staying with her husband at the hospital for a couple days. Complained that the trailer park people don’t pay and just hitch and leave if you try to force anything.

Still has the trailer park going strong over a year later.
