TAYRN , in The panzer has spoken

…I mean, yeah? If the number is 50 or 10 that works out great. But let’s try that with 7% of 13. Now it’s 13% of 7. Just like you said, “much easier to calculate.”

Okay, choosing prime numbers was intentionally mean on my part. But 3% of 9 becomes 9% of 3. 4% of 2 becomes 2% of 4. Can anyone honestly look me in the eye and tell me that this tip has helped them out in any meaningful way?

Goun ,

Wait are you questioning the wisdom of panzer of the lake?!

Ravi ,

x% × y = x × y ÷ 100 This helps you out much more.

plague_sapiens ,
@plague_sapiens@lemmy.world avatar

Its easier:

10% of a 100: 100 * 0,1 = 10

2,5% of 33: 33 * 0,025 = 30 * 0,025 + 3 * 0,025 = 0,75 + 0,075 = 0,825

Thats how I calculate it mostly in my brain. But being smart I usually just type everything (like 9*9) in the calculator xD

BeardedGingerWonder ,

I’d find 9% of 3 easier for sure. Sometimes it’s easier sometimes it’s not. Just use it when it’s easier.

jasondj , (edited )

9% of 3 is easier to estimate because you know it’s “almost 10% of 3”. Or, since 10-1==9, you could think of it as (10% of 3)-(1% of 3) and get the right answer using some other shortcuts. Humans being generally pretty good at base10, this is easy to figure out in your head as (0.3 - 0.03) and get 0.27.

Or, you could do what another commenter suggested and “3% of 9” can broken down as (3/100)•(9/1), becomes, (3•9) / (100•1), becomes 27/100, becomes 0.27. And that can be simplified as xy/100.

Different tools for different jobs. Base10 tricks are good for stuff like figuring out, say, a 15% or 20% tip, because you can easily figure out a 10% tip just by moving the decimal one space to the left, and add half of that (for 15) or double it (for 20). Or half and half again for (almost) 18%. xy/100 is a good trick for figuring out small percentages like sales tax (unless you’re in a place like Mass where it’s 6.25 and you gotta change it now to 625y/10000. At that point I’d just estimate at 6 in my head, or if I had to solve it mentally do (6y100) + ((1y100)/4).

Imgonnatrythis ,

This tip helped me 21%

Moops ,

So you might even say, “21% of you helped the tip”?

someguy3 ,

21% of 100%?

Imgonnatrythis ,

No. 100% of 21%

1847953620 ,

Yes, idiot. Choosing instances of when it’s less helpful (arguably) doesn’t negate the cases where it is deemed very helpful.

Tikiporch ,

Well, single digit percentages are easy. If it helps, move your decimal to the right so 9% becomes 90%. You can probably calculate 90% of 3 because you can do 10% and subtract it and get 2.7. Now move your decimal back to the left and you get 9% of 3 which is 0.27. You can do the same with higher percentages once you learn to break them in to 10% pieces.

Bransons404 ,

I’d… probably use the calculator app before I do all this mental gymnastics

Mr_Dr_Oink ,

This is not mental gymnastics.

This is a coherent method and makes a lot of sense.

Mental gymnastics is when someone has to lie to themselves to make a point that isn’t correct. Like when people argue that trump was a good president because they can list several good things he did.

Or when people claim something is mental gymnastics when it’s actually called maths.

hydroptic ,

You’re really asking whether commutativity of multiplication has ever helped anyone? Because that’s what this is.

And yes it has helped me eg. estimate things or whatever along the years – but of course it’s not going to be some sort of magical mathematics trick where just by reversing the numbers it’ll always make things easier to calculate in your head

TAYRN , (edited )

No, I think we all learned that multiplication is commutative in late elementary school, and obviously that’s an important thing to know.

But I think the original post tried to make it out to be some magical mathematical trick, and I really don’t understand that. Maybe I misunderstood the post.

Edit: wow, “commutative” is a really hard word to spell.

hydroptic ,

Yeah I think this is more about how you interpreted it, because it doesn’t look like others took it as being an absolute magic trick rule and neither did I.

The Panzer of the Lake didn’t use the word “commutativity” (fuck that really is hard to spell), but it gave out some wisdom that applied that rule by saying that “percentages are reversible”: if the reverse of a percentage would be easier to calculate, you can use it and get the same answer. If it’s not easier, well, then you’re screwed 😁 Oooooor depending on the situation you can use the a × b% = a × b / 100 commutativity trick:

7 × 8% = 0.56

7 × 8 / 100 = 0.56

TAYRN ,

Oh, that is actually much more helpful. So, if you know your times tables, you can do percentages. You just have to use communitavatization.

Jokes aside, I really appreciate it. That made it much more easier to understand. Thank you.

hydroptic ,

You’re welcome! Glad I could give you an a-ha moment.

Having an intuitive feel for tricks like using the definition of operators or symbols to make your life (well, calculations at least) easier usually means that you either have to just be “naturally” talented at math which is really rare, or you’ve just had to grind grind grind math at eg. university, work or whatever. So unless someone was taught that above trick and they actually remember it from school, they might never come to think that “hmm % just means / 100 so that can make this easier to figure out in my head”.

rockerface ,

I think you’re at least half right, statistically

SheDiceToday ,

I thought it was less about racial stereotypes, and more about this big recent push across multiple fields to not have people’s names attached to things. Right now (or recently) it’s about oviducts v Fallopian tubes or the bulbourethral gland v Cowperis gland in biology, which I’m familiar with. I think there was a post and comment thread about birds specifically in the last few days on Lemmy; same thing with people’s names being removed.

confluence ,

From what I’ve seen, a lot of the motivation to not have peoples’ names attached to things is because people have things attached to them (such as racism). Not saying that’s every case, but I’m sure that’s a significant factor behind the general push.

Touching_Grass ,

I fucking bet its really a chance for egotistical people to be able to put a names on things without having to discover new things.

confluence ,

Um. The names aren’t being replaced with other personal names, and even if they were, it’s certainly not with the names of the people doing the replacement.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

I think the point was they aren’t necessarily trying to replace names with their own, but they get the privilege to name it whatever they like and the name will be used until the next big wave of renaming things comes along.

confluence ,

Still an odd accusation to me… How does that privilege say anything about ego, given that history probably won’t remember the renamers specifically?

helpImTrappedOnline , (edited )

It’s really dependent on the attitude of the renamers. Maybe they are honored for the privilege and take it seriously, others might think it’s their god given right to name things and fuck the old names. That last one may be a bit extreme, and without actually knowing these people, the best option is to just not give a fuck and move on with life.

LinkOpensChest_wav , in Poverty isn't a flaw its a feature.
@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.one avatar

“Libertarian” always seems like a misnomer. Libertarians only want people like themselves to experience liberty. They aim to do nothing to address inequities like social and systemic discrimination against LGBT+ people, BIPOC, women, and others. They aim to do nothing to address poverty. It’s social darwinism at its ugliest. This is why they are practically indistinguishable from conservatives here in the US – the way they arrive may look different, but the outcomes are the same. At best, they are wearing blinders. At worst, they actively support the power structures and systems that result in things like poverty and abuse.

People who legitimately do seek liberty should instead be looking to things like anarchism, which is interested in addressing the root causes of all of these problems, such as hierarchies and the state.

Prunebutt ,

“Libertarian” used to be a synonym for left-wing anarchism until Murray Rothbard purposefully co-opted the term and even bragged about it.

winterayars ,

Yep it’s just a propaganda campaign.

explodicle ,

Fellow left-wing anarchists: should we just give up on trying to reclaim this word? What do you call yourself among people who don’t know the context?

Prunebutt ,

In Europe it’s way more ambiguous. Also: you can simply specify “left-wing”, or “right-wing” libertarian.

I usually just say “anarchist”, though ;)

MxM111 ,

There is equality and there is equity. Libertarians are for equality even if it creates non-equity.

Let me give an abstract example so that it is not politically charged. Suppose that there are green-skinned people in our society that for some historical reason value writing poetry above all else. And they are trying to earn their living by writing poetry and sometimes having second part time usually low paid job to support themselves.

Libertarian would say that these green people has absolute right to do so, and face consequences of their choice. This is liberty.
People who advocate equality would say - no, there is systemic green-ism that leads to green people being consistently underpaid, having less percent of them in high level jobs like CEO, and so on. They then propose all sorts of laws that will treat green people differently so that the average salary, average number of CEOs per 100,000 population and other similar metrics associated with “success” are the same for green people. This kind of differential treatment of green people is absolutely against to liberty minded people, that includes libertarians, that think that the laws should be the same to all people, regardless of their skin color, genetics and so on.

Zink ,

Interesting that the systemic discrimination in your case is due to a conscious choice and not systemic discrimination.

You describe the origins of “starving artist” and not “oppressed race” IMO.

explodicle ,

I assumed he was loosely referring to religion. “Go forth and multiply” [regardless of available support] is a huge source of suffering in the world.

Revan343 ,

People who legitimately do seek liberty should instead be looking to things like anarchism

Interestingly, ‘libertarian’ was originally a euphemism for ‘anarchist’, until it was co-opted by the right

on the bright side, once it’s in a playable state after a few patches it will probably be on sale!

ricecake ,

I’ve been having fun. I feel like the performance criticism is significantly overblown.

Performance could be better, but we’re talking motion blur and smoothing frame rates when swapping texture pallets.

GeneralEmergency ,

Performance issues aren’t my concern, as from what I’ve seen it’s just a couple options causing the problems.

But anytime I’ve seen this meme being used. I always get the impression the game isn’t fun, because why would you think people are out to ruin your fun unless you’re not actually having fun.

The mailbag showdown episode of zero punctuation talks about this better than what I could.

ricecake ,

Yeah, I usually see it being used when a game lands in the “bad press” category.
Personally, ive felt slightly frustrated at the dogpilling because it’s the type of game where I want to go look at the community response, see some of what other people are building, and get ideas for things to try to add to mine. Right now it’s hard to do that because looking for hospital placement tips just gets an air horn blast about how it’s unplayable because search engines suck sometimes.

And sometimes you just see the same posts over and over, and it just doesn’t match with what you’re actually doing and seeing and you want to laugh at people complaining about 30fps and no motion blur being unplayable in a city building game.
