Guy comes back with a obvious disguise and vpn on the back of his coat, asking the same streaming service: “I’m totally from another country, do you have this movie?”
Also also us: oh a lottery ticket that I know for a mathematical fact has such a tiny chance of winning that I’m literally more likely to be struck by a shark and eaten by lightning, well I’ll try my odds, who knows?
Unfortunately won’t work. They are judged heavily by window times it’s why they’ll sometimes rush you through even if your orders not ready they’ll have you go wait in the parking lot. They start getting in trouble if those numbers go too high
It happens to me on voyager. OP didn’t mention but I think they’re specifically referring to videos with vertical height larger than the screen. The video starts playing as you scroll and when the video is playing, I assume any touch gesture on the video is interpreted as video controls so you’re essentially stuck there without being able to scroll. Only way out is to kill the app and relaunch. Maybe it’s specific to iOS. It’s happening to me on iPhone 13 mini.
Congratulations on having something that helped your life. That’s honestly great. But come on you have to admit they manage to find a way to mess up your personal time. Like clockwork my daughter will start waking up/have a nightmare/want attention/etc a few min after I get time to read/study/game/Netflix/etc…
That’s temporary. Kids grow, they age, they mature. After a while, you start to learn more from them than they do from you.
Then they grow up and leave, they don’t need you anymore. I haven’t gotten there yet, and I’m both excited and afraid. But one day, if you love them, and if you prepare them, they will return the favor. They’ll be there when you grow old. They’ll be there to support you, as you were them.
The “kids suck” mentality is true, I agree, kids suck. But they only suck if you have a very narrow view on your and their lives.
Kids who have supportive parents will always need their parents even if they leave and are self sufficient. I’m sure your kiddos will still need you for a long time.
I’m not who you were replying to, but I wanted to voice that I’m in the narrow-minded “kids suck” camp. I’m too selfish to be a great parent, so I’ve elected to not be a parent at all. I’d be okay, maybe even good at it, but I’m all too aware of the freedom and the financial stability I’d be giving up to be a parent, and for that I know that I’d resent my child for taking that from me even if I consciously tried not to.
I have other additional reasons, but the strongest reason is that I like the ability to take my wife on spontaneous trips to wherever or just shut down and focus on myself. Parents can’t do that, at least not whenever they feel like it.
I will never understand why people liked Windows XP, I’d rather use Gentoo Linux from 2002 compiled from a stage 1 tarball than this steaming pile of shit. Windows 7 was solid, but 10 was (again) the biggest piece of garbage. Horrible UWP UI, Cortana, the garbage Windows Store, the Windows Phone integration, the useless Xbox app, the shitty version of OneNote, crappy MS Edge, Candy Crush ads in the fucking start menu and tons of data collection. Oh yeah, what a great operating system!

It was necessary for games. (Source: I dual-booted Windows XP and Gentoo Linux in 2002.)
Games is one of the blockers for me. I’m really hoping the Steam Deck changes things so that Windows is no longer needed at all.
Right now we’re just on stage 1, where almost everything that runs on the Steam Deck needs a compatibility layer. I’m hoping that the next step is developers building for Linux as well as Windows to run better on the Steam Deck, which would mean zero performance loss playing on a Linux desktop.
Dude, I said I needed Windows for games in 2002. I’ve been Linux-only for gaming for the better part of a decade now.
As long as you’re okay with skipping the few games from asshole developers who deliberately make it difficult, the transition you’re hoping for already happened.
I don’t game much, but with the few games I do occasionally play I’ve had really good success at getting them to run on Linux under proton. It’s way better than it was even a few years ago.
It’s the “under proton” I don’t like. It means the performance is never going to be 100% of what you get if you run it natively. Maybe in 90% of games the performance is close enough that I’d never notice, but I play enough games that for now it makes sense to have a dedicated game OS, which is all Windows is these days to me.
Honestly, I don’t see a difference performance wise. There was even this game I’ve played called Gunfire reborn that was running noticably better under proton compared to win10 on my system. The actual problem that’s still ongoing is games with anti-cheat though. Apex Legends enabled EAC on linux and it works like a charm, but most game devs don’t care.
The security on XP was comically bad. When people say “physical access is full access,” they aren’t even considering XP despite it being the textbook definition to the phrase. You were able to access the command line without even logging in.
Yeah, i found an old laptop running xp that had a password i didn’t know, was ridiculously easy to reset it, just reboot to safe mode and change it there
I thought it was pretty cool I could migrate my RISC CPU design from Logisim to Verilator, and even throw in some GTK so I could display some video, and have it all just work.
I have personally seen gambling fuck up way more lives than drugs, and this was before it was being shoved down our throats. It’s honestly disgusting how shameless the advertising has been, getting people to gamble like degenerates in “garbage time.” Or poking fun at people “losing their shirt” in Buffalo. And don’t even get me started at how they are using fantasy sports to get kids hooked early.
Fuck this so much. I know entire families - children, parents, grandparents - who’ve been put through hell over this.
Yeah no if he blew all his money on booze we’d be sympathetic to him as he’d be obviously a serious alcoholic. This is an addict suffering at the hands of his addiction.
It doesn’t matter if they choose to start, it matters that they weren’t able to stop, gambling and alcohol have both been extremely normalized in our society and are destroying lives. We shouldn’t have ads shoved down our throats for industries that profit off of destroying people’s lives for a quick buck. Shit aint right. I’m not saying make the industries illegal, just make the ads illegal. Saying drink responsibly at the end of an alcohol ad isn’t making anyone less of an alcoholic. And the tiny ass barely readable gambling addiction hotline isn’t gonna help anyone with a gambling addiction from getting hooked on sports Gambling which is one click away on the app store.
It matters from a cause-and-effect standpoint, but you’re callously and self-righteously blaming their whole situation on it. That you stop trying to understand the situation at that point reveals that you’re using it as an excuse to blame peoples’ suffering exclusively on their personal choices to feel better about yourself. That completely ignores any circumstances, predatory draws, nonstandard brain chemistry, or other factors outside of their control and assume they had perfect, complete knowledge of the situation and consequences at the time – which is honestly silly.
Mississippi grind is an absolutely incredible depiction of just how sad and devastating gambling addictions are. I can’t recommend that movie enough (as long as you’re ready for some sad storytelling).
Livestream online gambling is another one of those absolutely abysmal modern exposures that is going to completely destroy the lives of young men as they grow up, and I can’t believe it’s still legal
The fantasy sports are all about evading local gambling laws. Since only a handful of states even allow sports betting the only way to operate in those states is to have something which is legally distinct from gambling (even though it clearly is). It’s similar to pachinko parlours in Japan.
In the UK in the 1960s the Government fabricated “evidence” about train use so they could cut about 70% of the railways and sell the land on. It was known as the Beeching Report iirc.
