Or vet bills 😩

twinnie , in stone found at the beach of croatia

I’ve seen this reference so many times, can someone explain it?

themeatbridge , (edited )

It’s a reference to spam callers. For a few years, right around when everyone was realizing they shouldn’t answer the phone for unknown callers, it was really common to get calls that, if you picked up, would play a pre-recorded message along the lines of “Hello! We’ve been trying to get in touch with you regarding your car’s extended warranty. You may be entitled to money and blowjobs, and if your warranty expires, your hair will fall out and your car will be repossessed. To speak to a representative, press 1. Por habla Esperanto, marqué νούμερο 二.”

If you pressed 1, you would ostensibly be connected to a high-pressure sales rep trying to sell you a worthless maintenance contract. Nobody is really certain, though, because despite hundreds of millions of people receiving twelve of these calls each day, not one person every stayed on the line longer than “regarding…” In fact, my memory on the end of that message might be a fabrication, because I don’t think I ever heard it.

Carnelian ,

It’s a reference to how relentless phone scammers can be. The joke being that they would go to extreme lengths to reach you. Other similar memes might feature a message in a bottle reaching you while you are stranded on a deserted island, or a brick with the same message thrown through your window at night

rockSlayer ,

There’s an extremely common cold call scam where a VOIP calls you to notify you about your car warranty expiring, and for the low, low price of 100s of dollars they’ll give you an extended car warranty.

Imgonnatrythis ,

Many cars come with a short warranty. For a small fee you can extend this warranty on an annual basis to make sure your valuable purchase remains protected for years to come. For more information on how to go about this DM me.

One of the largest scam and phishing phone call strategies in the U.S. is based entirely on the aftermarket automobile “warranty” business. They charge people incredible amounts of money to cover parts and repairs they’ll probably never use over some arbitrary 3 or 5 year timespan. Its A kind of insurance for things that would have cost less than the warranty does, but sticker shock and sudden expense are the scariest. You get the offers through conventional mail marked up as like official government letters as well.

bisby ,

I get conventional mail marked up like it is from the manufacturer claiming my warranty is expiring.

With the added fun bonus that all the things they claim to cover are engine related, and my car is an EV with no engine.

As a person who has worked in telecom for over 15 years…shhhhhhhhh…

You like android better? Cool. You like IOS better? Cool. They do essentially the same thing in different ways with different pros and cons. What works best for one person may not be for someone else.

In 2024 if you’re arguing on the internet (or perhaps worse, in real life) about which phone is better you need to take a step back, take a deep breath, and take an assessment of your priorities.

Also, because I love downvotes apparently, this also applies to windows/linux/mac OS. Unless I’m on my Mac like “Gee I sure wish this was more open source, if only there was an alternative.” I don’t need you telling me to switch to linux bro.

selokichtli ,

What about the need to tell others how to and what to discuss in their free time with their social circle? Can I do that?

Eyck_of_denesle ,

It’s a relevant topic to talk about. You wrote so much yet said nothing except I don’t like seeing people talk down to apple users. Which i agree with a little but people will talk about relevant things like smart phone choice whether you like it or not.

Also have you tried switching to linux?

PM_ME_SNEKS_IN_HATS ,

It was more the fact that someone took the time to make a meme about it. Like, go outside. Also, perhaps, I’m a tad jaded since I remember this exact type of thing only it was Blackberry/Android/iPhone/Windows. It was more relevant back in the day when there were marked differences between the all the different mobile OS, but now it’s basically the same thing different ways.

Also yes, I have several Linux computers that I mostly use as they are older machines so I drop linux on them for various projects or just to make the computer run better for web browsing and other simple tasks. I also have a Mac for making art and music. I primarily use my windows PC because I mostly game and work (using Microsoft 365) on it and that’s the easiest solution. I honestly don’t understand why everybody feels the need to bring up linux constantly around here. If you like linux that’s cool, if it’s relevant to the conversation, that’s cool. But if I’m on a windows related thread asking about a windows issue it is rather annoying for someone to jump in and be like “jUsT uSe LiNuX” every 3 seconds.

In summation, if people get to complain about how other phone sucks I get to complain about how people complain about other phone sucking is bothersome to me.

Lizardking27 ,

So do you whip out this copypasta anytime people try to have a fun discussion about something or?

PM_ME_SNEKS_IN_HATS ,

It is now my dream that this becomes a new copypasta. That would be neat.

jaggedrobotpubes ,

It used to be the same for Windows until microsoft recall. Putting windows in that category is now an outdated thing.

PM_ME_SNEKS_IN_HATS ,

Bro you got me there. If I can’t fully disable that crap when it eventually comes out I’m going to have to figure something out. (I swear to God if someone tells me just to switch to linux without knowing my use case for windows, I might even downvote them maybe.)

Fades , (edited )

Absolutely, well put!! It’s honestly sad in my eyes

I’ve given up especially when it comes to Linux vs Mac on the topic of open source. People will have such a violent reaction that they cannot possibly consider Apple as anything else but the literal antithesis of open source.

if you think Apple has a place in open source, you’d be right, but you’ll also get attacked for it because Apple bad.

Only a handful of months ago Apple released open source AI models that run on-device.

It’s so obvious over many years that Apple has always gotten their hands dirty in the open source world going back to even before the birth of OSX, both with use and contributions, yet this is stomped out by the notion of expensive and elitist Apple could never and would never actually bother contributing to open source codebases

PM_ME_SNEKS_IN_HATS ,

I’m glad someone, mostly, got my point. I’m not an Apple fanboy by any means. I’m a “use the right tool for the job you are trying to do” guy. For me, that means using a mac to make music and art, using linux on older machines and for specific purposes, and using windows to game and work. But by golly, people sure do get up in arms about it.

elucubra ,

It’s comparing hardware, not OS

PM_ME_SNEKS_IN_HATS , (edited )

Fair point, but the implication is phone type A bad phone type B good. And both those devices are tied to a specific OS.

mynamesnotrick , in awHell Naw

Literally me. Also, freaking AGM batteries… so expensive. To support the auto idle off feature that I despise I have to buy a more expensive battery.

skulblaka ,
@skulblaka@sh.itjust.works avatar

AGMs are actually worth the squeeze even on a car that doesn’t necessarily require one, they’re genuinely good-ass batteries. Expensive, though. But they’ll blow the pants off a lead acid in a stress test.

Also lots of cars have an option to toggle the auto-off. Not all of them though. And some will reset it every time you turn the car on and off.

mynamesnotrick ,

That’s good to hear, this is my first one and had a bit of sticker shock replacing it yesterday. Yeah, my car does have the auto idle off switch but you have to toggle it every start-up to disable it. I dont mind it when I’m in the city stopped at lights but when its shutting off at each stop sign its super annoying.

Facts, my car, despite having the same issues it had when I bought it, will not pass emissions despite passing with flying colors two years ago when I bought it. Of course this is right as my state is cracking down on out of date registrations, and apparently I need to spend over $1k before I’m eligible for a temp emissions waiver. Tough when I spent $2k total on the car, lmao.

I’m barely clawed out of credit card debt and here comes this stupid bomb. Damn you, Toyota, for fucking up the 1zz engine to where it develops oil burning issues that require work that’s approaching a rebuild to fix, especially since the car drives perfectly fine so long as it’s topped off.

Toyota

They’re boring, they’re behind in tech, they aren’t cool, they’re more expensive to buy

But seriously, if you want to just follow the maintenance schedule and get to where you need to go with minimal doubt - there’s nothing quite like them

chaosppe ,
@chaosppe@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed. Bought a used toyota yaris back in 2018. Still runs perfect, and even if something would go wrong. It’s cheap so I’m not worried. Good speakers, mpg is decent enough and road tax is like £35 per year. Doesn’t make me look super cool, but I’d rather be financially sound.
