The taxonomy in biology can be really confusing. Potatoes (only their fruits), peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, avocados, lemons, oranges, kiwifruit and papayas are also in the berry club.

PeriodicallyPedantic ,

Potatoes are tubers, I don’t think they fit the botanical definition of a fruit. They contain no seeds, for example.

The rest are though. Pumpkins was the one that always blew my mind.

jmcs ,

The potato plant poisonous fruit is a berry though.

You are correct, but the potato plant bears potato fruits, which are classified as berries. I will clarify that in my comment.

I hope you mean the taxonomy in botany, things are much clearer on the zoological side

Well, I’m not a biologist and even all my houseplants are constantly dying. For me, biology as a whole is confusing.

would bananas being seedless mean that they are also not berries?

justastranger ,

Bananas have seeds, they’re just incredibly degenerated in commercial bananas. Next time you have one, break off a chunk and count the black specks inside. Each one would’ve been a seed if not for generations of human intervention.

PeriodicallyPedantic ,

Bananas have seeds. We’ve just bred them for hundreds of generations so the seeds are small and so soft you don’t even notice them.

Can you explain briefly what is the difference between Firefish and Mastodon? I checked Firefish and looks the same but on white.

Aurenkin ,

Can I have my fediverse on rye?

gabe ,

Firefish is more tumblr-y, mastodon more twitter-y. Both are good, have their pros and cons. It’s a matter of preference. Firefish is extremely easy to set up though, like ridiculously so.

Roundcat OP ,
@Roundcat@kbin.social avatar

Just started using it. First impressions, it's definitely feels more unique than mastodon, and has features its missing. Like there are reactions in addition to favoriting a post, and you can quote post. At this point, It kinda feel's like Mastodon's kbin.

NotAPenguin ,

they are both twitter-like fediverse platforms, same content shared.

Firefish is just a much nicer experience IMO.

BonesOfTheMoon ,

I find Firefish adorable for some reason? Like I know nobody who uses it but when I signed up a bunch of random people made sure to greet me. It was very sweet.

BonesOfTheMoon ,

You can also send DMs on Firefish and I haven’t found a way to do that on Mastodon.

Reach ,

A mastodon DM is a private post. Setting a post to private before sending means only mentioned accounts can see it, and all mentioned accounts get notified. In a sense this enables both DMs and group messages too. But it’s not the most elegant interface for it tbf. A good app makes this feel more DM like, such as Ice Cubes on iOS or the equivalent on Android.

BonesOfTheMoon ,

Oh ok. I’m still learning it. I like Firefish better design wise.

For some reasons a big part of Africa speaks French. There’s even a theory predicting that French could be the most spoken language in the World by the end of the century because of Africa’s population growth.

Georgia in Europe is annoying so we would call them “joor-jee-yuh” instead, at least in Augusta GA lol.

Oh, we know Ireland, most would often just give them the entire island out of ignorance & laziness tbh.

Sidenote: Ex-USSR bit is pretty effing accurate tho lol

Home-grown fruit, like tomatoes (and especially strawberries!) are, like, an entirely different fruit than store-bought. They are SO freaking good! It is like opening Pandora’s Box, because you’ll never enjoy store-bought again.

Mr_Blott ,

Try making a pizza sauce from homegrown tomato and you find out why a Marguerita pizza exists

DragonAce ,

Yeah, I started gardening several years ago and I’ve now got about 5 different varieties of tomatoes, they all taste unique and they all taste fucking amazing. But I will say, if someone isn’t into the idea of gardening, then I would agree its a waste of time.

Apock ,

We got our very first raspberries this year and Oh. My. God! They are so much better!

theragu40 ,

Or you can be like me thinking I hated tomatoes, until I tried home grown ones finally and realized it isn’t tomatoes I hate it’s shitty mealy store bought tomatoes that I hate. And it turns out everyone actually hates those because they are shitty.

reverendsteveii ,

you hate beefsteak tomatoes. they’re grown to be large and red, to survive transport well, and to look good on grocery store shelves. if your job is to sell tomatoes that you’re not actually gonna eat, they’re perfect. If, however, you intend to eat tomatoes it’s hard to do worse than a beefsteak. Mealy, flavorless, hard to cut, generally difficult.

What you want are plum, roma or campari tomatoes. The smaller dudes, and roast them a little bit before you use them if you can. We just started growing san marzanos instead of beefsteak varietals and the difference is night and day. Switching to them, I can finally taste the essential flavor elements of a good marinara sauce.

theragu40 ,

Yeah camparis are pretty legit.

LinuxSBC ,

I like Cherokee purples as well, but they can be a bit hard to find in some places.

LinuxSBC ,

I totally agree on strawberries. They’re really easy to grow (once they’re in place, they survive through winters and you actually have to stop them from spreading), and the berries are so good.
