Hey guys, Peter Griffin here to explain the joke the image.

The image taken in Yunnan (China) 16 Aug 2022 by JiaQi Sun displays a Cumulonimbus calvus with the accessory cloud pileus on top. A pileus is formed when a rising cloud pushes the air above it higher which causes it to cool down adiabatically. When sufficient humidity is present in that higher layer of air, the humidity condenses into a pileus.

Here the pileus displays quite magnificent iridescence. The sun is behind the cloud. When sunlight passes through the very small and evenly sized cloud droplets of the pileus, diffraction takes place. Different wavelengths are diffracted in different angles and thus the white light of the sun is broken down into separate colours. While the cloud droplets are similar in size, there is still some variation there. The size of the droplets also affects the ammount of diffraction and thus the colours are somewhat disordered.

If you want to see cloud iridescence yourself, look for clouds passing in front of the sun that aren’t opaque enough to block it completely. Lenticular clouds, Cirrocumulus lenticularis in particluar are good candidates for iridescence as they are formed in a similar manner to the pileus here and have an even distribution in droplet size.

There have been a number of viral photoshops circulating the internet since the original pictures were taken where the cloud has been added to wide angle shots and made to appear like it takes up half the sky. These however are easily debunked with basic knowledge about clouds and the optical phenomena in question as the colours here are impossible at wider angles.

csolisr ,

Not if you encode it using an exponent. One Planck time unit is roughly 1.8 x 10^-43^ seconds, so with an exponent of 2^128^ (roughly 3.4 x 10^38^) you could write a second as 54510 x 2^128^ TP

csolisr ,

Another fun fact, 2^128+32^ Planck time units are about 21 hours

2 is a prime number though……

Is it Just because it’s the only even one?

JohnDClay ,

Often things hold true for all primes except 2. You come across things like “for all non two primes”

wischi ,

Any examples? Sounds like you mean the reason why one is excluded from the primes because of the fundamental theorem of arithmetic.

JohnDClay ,

I just remember it from numberphile, I don’t remember what videos sorry.

wischi ,

Wow that was fast I just edited my previous comment and you probably mean “1 and prime numbers” by numberphile with james grime.

kogasa , (edited )
@kogasa@programming.dev avatar

No, he’s right. “For any odd prime” is a not-unheard-of expression. It is usually to rule out 2 as a trivial case which may need to be handled separately.

en.wikipedia.org/…/Fermat's_theorem_on_sums_of_tw…

www.jstor.org/stable/2047029

www.jstor.org/stable/2374361

wischi ,

It’s not unheard of no, but if you have to rule out two for some reason it’s because of some other arbitrary choice. In the first instance (haven’t yet looked at the second and third one) it has to do with the fact that a sum of “two” was chosen arbitrary. You can come up with other things that requires you to exclude primes up to five.

kogasa ,
@kogasa@programming.dev avatar

Okay? Like I said, it’s usually to rule out cases where 2 is a trivial edge case. It’s common enough that “for any odd prime / let p be an odd prime” is a normal expression. That’s all.

Whirlybird ,

Like what? Genuine question, have never heard of this.

JohnDClay ,

In the drawer in the living room in the house in my town in my state in my country.

wischi ,

And how is “even” special? Two is the only prime that’s divisible by two but three is also the only prime divisible by three.

Whirlybird ,

Well 2 is the outlier because it’s the only even prime. It might not be “special” but it is unique out of all of the prime numbers.

wischi ,

“even” just means divisible by two. So it’s not unique at all. Two is the only prime that’s even divisible by two and three is the only prime that’s divisible by three. You just think two is a special prime because there is a word for “divisible by two” but the prime two isn’t any more special or unique in any meaningful way than any other prime.

Whirlybird ,

It’s unique because all the others are odd numbers. This is crazy that you’re trying to argue this.

wischi ,

Of couse all the others are odd because otherwise they wouldn’t be prime. All primes after three are also not divisible by three… “magic”. The only difference is that there are is no word like “even” or “odd” for “divisible by three” or “not divisible by three”.

Whirlybird ,

only difference is that there are is no word like “even” or “odd” for “divisible by three” or “not divisible by three”.

Yep, hence why 2 is unique - there is a word to describe numbers that are divisible by 2, and 2 is the only one of those that is a prime number.

It seems that you don’t know what the word “unique” means.

Reddit is fun croaked for me last week, now I’m all Lemmy!

Unless lemmy crashes, then I lurk reddit signed out with browser.

As the crashes and maintenance here become less frequent and the platform is more reliable I’m ready to leave reddit in the dust entirely

this_is_router ,
@this_is_router@feddit.de avatar

Haven’t visited reddit since the API gate. Deleted my account instantly, I miss nothing

OtakuAltair ,

Lemmy doesn’t crash, the .world server does. Just use a smaller instance like lemmy.zip or lemm.ee

Hikiru ,

Only reason I use lemmy.world is for community discoverability. Until subscriber counts are federated, it only shows the amount of subs on your instance, and on average the most subs are on lemmy.world. I have a backup alt for when lemmy.world is down

OtakuAltair ,

Discoverability is definitely one of the biggest hurdles in using Lemmy right now.

ChocoboRocket ,

I’m clearly not understanding this platform as well as I thought, I should probably watch a video or something!

The memes and boobs are great, but I’d love to get more reliable news and local information, seems like every Canadian one dies or is unpopular (fair enough given the limited user base which is still kind of nice)

And the news + politics seems to crash, but that’s because I’m still using .World …I think?

duckington ,

The way it works is that there’s not one lemmy site, there’s many different sites, or “instances” that people can host on their own servers—lemmy.world and lemm.ee are two of these. The catch is that they are “federated”, meaning that a user in one instance can see, vote on, comment on, etc posts from another instance. That’s why you can be on lemmy.world and see posts from !memes. So if lemmy.world goes down it’s as simply as typing in another instance to your address bar :^)

eestileib ,

However, all the communities hosted on lemmy.world will be inaccessible while it is down. If you really only care to look at one of those at a particular moment, lemmy might as well be down for you.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot ,

They’ll still be accessible, since instances store local copies of data from servers that they’re federated. Your interactions with those communities will be invisible to anyone outside your own instance until the instance hosting the community comes back up, though.

SlopppyEngineer ,

It’s more like email than a regular platform. Each insurance is a Lemmy “provider” but from any instance you can reach every other instance. It even used the @server for user names and communities like email. It also means you have a [email protected], [email protected], …

big_slap ,

think of all of this like email, you get data from other providers and interact with people and posts using an “email address”. im oversimplifying it, but that’s how i started to wrap my head around all of this

RoosterBoy ,

Jerboa, the official lemmy app, crashes in a new way every update.

Sconrad122 ,

Since when is Jerboa the “official Lemmy app”? It’s not even the only FOSS app and I’m not aware of any connection between the Jerboa and Lemmy developers, let alone the various admins of the lemmy communities that Jerboa accesses. Use a different app if Jerboa isn’t working for you

Edit: I was wrong, just looked at github and it looks like there is an affiliation between lemmy developers and Jerboa. But it’s still not the official app of any of the instances, so it’s not like Reddit where the devs and admins are the same entity

quicksand ,

Thanks for the information

OtakuAltair ,

Then don’t use it? Lol

Isn’t the freedom to use whatever app we like a large part of why we’re on Lemmy now?

Sync is amazing. Voyager and Thunder are also great if you only want foss.

boringbisexual ,

I second Thunder. Scrolling up is a little glitchy but otherwise it’s pretty good.

BarrelAgedBoredom ,

I went back to reddit out of boredom a couple of days ago while lemmy.world was doing it’s thing. It dawned on me how shitty things have gotten there over the years. It’s more active, sure but the comments sections are full of hot garbage 99% of the time unless you’re in a small community. And the sheer quantity of comments basically guarantees you won’t be seen or responded to unless you appeal to lowest common denominator bs.

The engagement you get here is much higher quality. It isn’t nearly impossible to have a real conversation and get deep about any given topic. I miss my hobby subs and go back every now and then for those but I’m otherwise all in on lemmy
