It’s for those of us that enjoy the pure experience of tasteless white filth. They aren’t just a vehicle for sauce; they’re a multifaceted nugget of salt, breading, hot paste, and disappointment.
Every Lemmy user should run a single user server instance on their phone. Setting it up should be as easy as installing any other app. And doing this should not depend on any cloud infrastructure beyond DNS
I’m actually not really. Here’s at least a logical arguments one could make.
Healthcare is a scarce resource like all things. Making it universal doesn’t exempt it from that fact. Removing it from a competitive market will likely make it more expensive and prevent innovations which will keep it affordable. Competitive markets drive efficiency.
Government provided healthcare rations service availability based on criteria they set. A private system rations availability based on the indivual’s ability to afford the service. If people can afford the service additional capacity can be created with that money. Under a government system extremely long wait times are the norm … With health this may mean late diagnosis of cancer and other suboptimal outcomes.
People are generally more wealthy in the later years of their lives and also in need of more care. Under a public system the costs associated with an aging population will be disproportionately placed on younger people who still pay taxes in their prime earning years. With the number of working people constantly decreasing when compared to the number of retired baby boomers this is unsustainable under a public system.
At the end of the day I think free markets apply poorly to healthcare because you have no ability to comparison shop during a medical emergency. Also US seems to have the worst mix of regulated private healthcare which has kept costs the highest of any country. I do think most social democratic countries are basically screwed over the next 20 years with the demographics being what they are.
Tried Jerboa, Sync and Thunder (and Artemis + web app for kbin).
Sync seems the most polished because it came from Reddit, but the fact that you can't post in Sync right now makes it really hard to dig in and dedicate to it.
Thunder feels like a more polished version of Jerboa, but I'm not a huge fan of the Material You design and big iconography in any of these apps (I came from RIF, so I'm used to basically early 2010s UI, lol).
Artemis is unevalautable right now given its severe alpha state.
And of course, lemmy.world is having connection issues, so none of the apps really "work" right now, no fault of their own. At least Thunder seems to cache old data, since it's populated when I open it, versus Sync which can't make a connection.
Please excuse my maybe stupid question, but did you manage to move your account from lemmy.world to another instance? If so, would you please share how you did that?
You can use Lasim to download your profile settings and subscribed communities from Lemmy.world and then upload to your new account. You need a computer tho, it isn’t a mobile app.
Not stupid, it isn’t straight forward, there’s a python script that helps with transferring subscriptions, posts and comments can’t be transfered though
Complaining about bilingual (english + french) positions in the public service is a favorite hobby of anglo public servants, as if the french ones didn’t need to learn a second language to get the job… Heck, it’s not rare to see/hear one argue that french Canadians should just start speaking english and stop bothering them about their “unique culture”…
I can confirm this, in high school (Québec) no one really gives a f**k about learning English as they don’t need it if they stay in Québec and don’t understand that knowing English is a valuable asset.
An ethnicity or ethnic group is a grouping of people who identify with each other on the basis of perceived shared attributes that distinguish them from other groups. Those attributes can include common sets of traditions, ancestry, language, history, society, nation, religion, or social treatment within their residing area
I always wanted to be a criminal defence lawyer after having a bad interaction with the police, but I’m currently too depressed to handle that. I’m way over-empathetic, so if I ever become a lawyer and have a client who I genuinely believe is innocent, if they get convicted of BS charges, I’d be heartbroken to see an innocent person getting convicted, and probably blame myself for it. Maybe being a lawyer just isn’t for me.
If you became a criminal defence lawyer, I can tell you that most of your clients would be ones who have committed crimes. Only a few would be ones who haven’t. The work is still fun and you should remember that the standard of evidence is “innocent until proven guilty”. More often guilty people go scott free than innocent people getting convicted(happens, but if you are even a little competent, it’s almost impossible).
A lot of times the police also concocts stories and twists facts. It’s also one of the very few professions where there is a person dedicated to making sure you fail at your job(the opposing counsel). With all this, you have to be very smart and cold. They will use everything against you. And remember, the world is always “grey” and never black and white. You can find dirt on even the likes of Gandhi (racist against blacks and also slept with his 16 year old niece) and Nelson Mandela. No one is “pure” or “good”. It’s all a spectrum.
If you became a criminal defence lawyer, I can tell you that most of your clients would be ones who have committed crimes.
The idea behind wanting to be a criminal defense lawyer is not necessary to “protect innocent people” but rather to protect against unfair and excessive punishment against an entity that has huge resources to fuck up people’s lives for minor crimes. Like smoking weed? 40 years. (There was an article about it) Getting an abortion? Get charged with murder. Laws are just so unnecessary cruel, which is why I always wanted to be a laywer. Unfortunately I think that’s a bit too much for me to handle.
In that case it sounds like you would have been better off being a politician (they make the laws), judge (you can give minimal sentences) or just a lobbyist / non-profit.
Being a judge practically requires having a law degree as a prerequisite (and also convincing whoever appoints judges to appoint you or convincing people to elect you), being a politician requires actually convincing people to vote for you, also lots of funding for advertising. Much more difficult than being a lawyer.
Agreed, only reason I suggested this is because as a lawyer, you will at most practice in just one district. In a country with thousands of districts. Even then you may not get a lot of clients who you seek to help against unjust laws, because they have to select you too and it’s a free market. Would just be impractical to make a big difference.
When lemmy.world goes down, I use the time it is down to do other things. Like read, spend more quality time with my pets, learn something new, or just go outside and touch some grass.
