Remember when the nazis stopped genociding people when they were asked to stop being mean? Like, apparently the existence of some groups is something we can “agree to disagree” on.
I can see a world where when the Fediverse/Lemmy grows more, a big corporation buys out the top 10 (or whatever) Lemmy instances, combines them and defederates from all other instances. Add a new frontend, a shitty app, and run ads and et voilà.
The majority of users (“normies”) won’t switch instances and so the cycle repeats.
Is this something that will only affect Google Chrome or other chromium based browsers immediately? I’m on Firefox already but the change isn’t so appealing to friends who are on Google Chrome.
The concern with WEI proposal is that it’s going to be server enforced. Basically, the server will require browsers to be signed and will refuse to talk to ones it doesn’t recognize the signature for. This will mean that you’ll only be able to talk to such servers using a browser that’s approved by whoever distributes these certs. This is a great explanation of the whole scheme.
The most used lie is “I’ve read the TOS and PP” before clicking in “Accept”, the biggest joke is the sentence with which start every PP “Your privacy is very important for us”.
Why’s everything gotta be about money? Good things happen without it. Rain falls, feeds a fruit tree, makes a fruit, I eat it, poop out the seeds, new fruit tree grows. Money doesn’t fall from trees, but I can’t eat money.
The whole system is poorly prioritized to protect people’s things instead of people. Even then it does a poor job and only protects the things that belong to those with the most things. It’s not even about those people, just their wealth, because if somebody else got their wealth no one would care about them anymore.
I don’t care about communists or capitalists or any ists you can name. To hell with Mao and Thatcher and Lenin and Reagan and Trump and Biden. Fuck em. My question is why can we always find money for war, and for rich people to do stupid shit, but never enough for health care, or food for hungry children, or anything like that. Fuck anybody okay with hungry babies.
Eating and apple and pooping out the seeds might grow new trees, but none of those trees are likely to make apples like you ate.
Money is a convenient way to trade your work or skills for someone else’s. Like the guy who grafts apple tree scions together to make the apples that taste good grow in their orchard.
Now when the guy who knows how to grow hood apple trees decides he doesn’t want to compete against anybody else’s apples and squashes them, we have problems, and need rules to keep that from happening.
Right liberalism is about individual rights, economic freedom and freedom in general. Left-wing countries will give big tech more power cause they’ll have advantages over other companies and groups cause they have the money to pay for unnecessary laws that the left likes and they’ll be friends with the government. In countries even more on the left the problem will be the same but added that you won’t have any economic freedom and individual rights, small groups and companies will most likely not exist or die in the minute they’re created and you won’t be able to support them cause you basically doesn’t own your own money and the money will he spent on useless taxes that you supported. Your ideas give big tech power, you’re not the resistance but the perpetrator. Big techs have grown more and more as the world has become more leftist and you insist in not noticing the base of your mentality is helping big tech.
Right wing countries do this. What do you think South Korea is? “Economic freedom,” is freedom commensurate with economic power, which means freedom for people with money, and “personal responsibility” for people without. The opposite of government regulation of business is corporate domination of government. You’re conflating these opposites to falsely align organized labor with “big business.” The entire right-libertarian political project is a smokescreen for the Kochs and their economic class to baffle morons into thinking the policies they want benefit the little guy.
A company can only thrive above all others without good products is if it has support from the government or is a company owned by the government, right-wings want to reduce the State as much as possible while the left often wants to give the State more power. I don’t know how you think people having control of their money instead of giving it to the government for them to do whatever they want is some conspiracy by the corporations but you must note that the last thing a big company wants is that the people have choices and control over their own money, they want people to be babysitted by the government and that they’re their own choices. We act with the principle that anyone can be bad and the power can corrupt people so we work for the power to never be concentrated in the hand of one person or group.
We already live in a true capitalist society but it’s fastly leaning to the the left. People were happier in the past and capitalism was full on its tracks and countries were more conservative.
are you talking about the years of economic prosperity in North America after the New Deal, the end of the second world war, and the establishment of the United Nations? are those the small government policies that created “real capitalism”? or are you talking about the decline and destruction of global communism at the hands of the Reaganite social order that immediately preceded a half century of malaise and the destruction of the working class? this conversation cannot produce anything for you if you cannot come to the realization. don’t wince. open your eyes and turn your head to the mirror, stupid american. the corn syrup teeth rotting out of your head are the reward they gave you for winning.
Eh, they could still do the scummy shit Apple and Google were doing to each other with SMS. Start encoding “extra features” in the standard messages and pushing that garbage out to the rest of the network. Or hit it with a 51% attack and scramble everything that can’t defederate fast enough. Still problematic.
I think that 51% of the fediverese even for Google is too complicated, even if he gets such a large instance, it’s in the fediverse only one more and it can easy be blocked and excludet by any other instance (several thousend), as it also ocurres with some Nazi instances (Gab and others). Although some instances are small, chow does Google intend to control the instance that a guy has created for him and his friends on his own server? it is in the nature of this decentralized system, self-hosted in private servers, that it cannot be controlled as a whole by a single entity, as is done in traditional monolithic social networks, such as Reddit, X, Meta, . …it’s like trying to eat a broth with a fork- There are already many instances created by corporations, companies, official and gov sites, NASA, ESA, informations media and journalists in the fediverse, coming from all over the world and all hosted on their own servers. It only stands to reason that they’re going to tell Google to hell if it try to take control of them. Google has a lot of servers, but can only control these, but not others.
I’m not betting on the 51%, but it’s still on the table. I’m more convinced they’ll start throwing garbage over the protocol and uninformed users will migrate to instances that support that garbage because of peer pressure, features, or just wanting to get rid of the encoded messages. It’ll turn into the green chat bubble argument with some people feeling their instance is superior in the way it deals with it.
I’m viewing this through the Liftoff app and your username has big block letters and a blue circle for the O but looks normal when viewed from other apps. Is that some customization you can do that only shows up if an app supports it?
Seriously I had to google it. I didn’t grow up in the States so I wonder perhaps a lot of people in some parts of the world never heard about it or seen one.
After my research, I realised I’ve seen some toys like that during my childhood but they must have been knockoffs or other brands. Pretty sure I’ve never seen one that wasn’t a keychain. I had no idea people were investing in them as valuable collectibles.
Yep, while they were still being produced…so you had a situation where people were buying based on the assumed scarcity of a product upon which there was no pressure of limited quantity and in fact with the way they were selling there was every incentive for the manufacturer to keep making more and more, destroying that scarcity and in the process, the value.
There were certainly “limited edition” models, but even those weren’t that rare, and the omnipresence of beanie babies in general likely mitigated any sense of rarity to all but the most dedicated collectors.
I remember not knowing the bottom had fallen out, but thinking it was odd to see someone at a flea market selling them for like $3 each, then realizing I hadn’t seen them in a major retailer in a while, and then figuring out that the bubble had indeed burst.
My sister had a few dozen, including some rare ones, and I had received one (not a rare one) as a gift at some point, but even at the peak of the craze, my parents were very good about explaining what was going on with them to us kids.
