weker01 , in What is the largest file transfer you have ever done?

I once moved ~5TB of research data over the internet. It took days and unfortunately it also turned out that the data was junk :/

kent_eh , in What is the largest file transfer you have ever done?

Multiple TB when setting up a new server to mirror an existing one. (Did an initial copy with both together in the same room, before moving the clone to a physically separate location. Doing that initial copy would saturate the network connection for a week or more otherwise)

apt_install_coffee , in Soon to be 4 months exclusively on Linux

Regarding 1: if you open up dmesg after it happens and you see an error regarding “No edid read”, your GPU is having a hard time automatically getting the monitor’s edid over display port. My 7800xt has this issue.

If your monitor setup doesn’t change much, you can manually set the edid on a per output basis. Here is a good guide.

Also, regarding 3: you may need to set your amdgpu feature mask in your kernel parameters.

WereCat OP ,

Thanks!

1.) will definitely give it a try 3.) I have set the amdgpu feature mask otherwise I wouldn’t even have access to the power limit, voltages, etc… but VRAM overclocking just does not work. Everything else seems to work fine.

just_another_person , in Touchscreens, Debian, and Having Fun - Ideas?

If it had battery, it would be more useful. I was originally thinking HA control, but you wouldn’t even be able to put it somewhere convenient. Maybe make a tiny scale Arcade Machine? The screen is about the right angle.

curbstickle OP ,

Agreed - lets be honest, Lenovo put zero thought into this. Its just a tiny with a screen basically glued to the top, and tons of poorly managed cables coming out of the back. You could technically get away with just the power cord on it since it has wifi, but its kind of nonsensical that way. I could build a battery pack, but… meh.

Small arcade is definitely a fun idea though, something I could stick in the living room. Since it has two video outs as well, I could set it up to take over the TV or just be a standalone as the mood strikes.

curbstickle OP ,

Ok, so had to mention while looking at some game stuff to install… I remembered that I have a gog account, grabbed lutris, and boy is Quest for Glory 1 entertaining on this! QFG2-5 installed as well, unfortunately the touchscreen doesn’t work great in that mode. Solaar + a spare logitech mouse and off to play… Going to have to grab my steam controller when I get up. I think a stupid fun classic game/emulation station is what this is going to be! (At least until I decide to do something else)

It’s the plans to invest in Israel that bothers me at the moment. After all we’ve seen I just can’t put money into that. I’d rather not buy any tech that support that.

A few years back I worked at a home. They organised the whole data structure but needed to move to another Providor. I and my colleagues moved roughly just about 15.4 TB. I don’t know how long it took because honestly we didn’t have much to do when the data was moving so we just used the downtime for some nerd time. Nerd time in the sense that we just started gaming and doing a mini LAN party with our Raspberry and banana pi’s.

Surprisingly the data contained information of lots of long dead people which is quiet scary because it wasn’t being deleted.

jadedwench ,

No idea about which specific type of business it is, but keeping that history long term can have some benefits, especially to outside people. Some government agencies require companies to keep records for a certain number of years. It could also help out in legal investigations many years in the future and show any auditors you keep good records. From a historical perspective, it can be matched to census, birth, and death certificates. A lot of generational history gets lost.

Companies also just hoard data. Never know what will be useful later. shrug

Hugin , in What is the largest file transfer you have ever done?

It was something around 40 TB X2 . We were doing a terrain analysis of the entire Earth. Every morning for 25 days I would install two fresh drives in the cluster doing the data crunching and migrate the filled drives to our file server rack.

The drives were about 80% full and our primary server was mirrored to two other 50 drive servers. At the end of the month the two servers were then shipped to customer locations.

I use Strawberry for mine.

Noel_Skum , in Want to manage music on an old school iPod

I used rhythmbox on a system running Mint to move music to and from an iPod nano 2. It was fairly straight forward. Save the transfers before closing the programme and you’re good to go.

theshatterstone54 , in Has anyone achieved using their laptop as their only device?

I was just about to say: “Yeah, I don’t need a desktop” and then I read what you said. I can see myself going to a “dumbphone” aka a phone-only phone, but this is a bit too much for me tbh.

gnutard OP ,

Unfortunately, I can’t go that route. I use many different phone numbers through Pidgin, so I don’t think the flip phone would do.

BaumGeist ,

You’d be surprised what a feature phone can do nowadays

gnutard OP ,

It is convient, but I’m trying to avoid using proprietary software as much as possible. Those phones tend to use proprietary operating systems. Thanks for the suggestion though!

zygo_histo_morpheus ,

There are non-propietary versions of android, I use /e/OS for example. Try searching for de googled android if you wanna find out more.

gnutard OP , (edited )

Oh, I already use GrapheneOS on my Pixel; it’s a nice experience, but at the same time, it’s not enough for me. The firmware isn’t free, and I don’t like the fact that it can still spy on me to some extent. I also just don’t want to use my phone; I find myself to be a lot more productive with a laptop.

BCsven ,

Have you thought about going with a Pixel and Loading GrapheneOS on it? It degoogles the pixel

gramgan , in Want to manage music on an old school iPod

Depending on how old the iPod is, you might have some luck installing rockbox firmware on it.

But, in any case, yes, moving your music over will functionally be as if copying it to an external drive.

TCB13 ,
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve mixed feeling about that firmware, on paper it looks great but then there are annoyances here and there such as the stuff around the boot.

AndrewZabar OP ,

Is it like a better software on the device than the stock one? I’m open to the idea if it’s fairly safe. Will take a look. Thanks.

SeekPie ,

It has better compability with Linux and different filetypes and also many more customization options.

AndrewZabar OP ,

Ok well it’s model A1136

BaumGeist ,

That works according to rockbox’s website (Apple days A1136 is 5th generation, which means it falls within the 1g through 6g “classic”)

Heads up though: my primary use was through my car’s stereo via USB; it does not work the same. It used to just pop up as a media device that showed the categories to sort by, now it’s only treated as a storage device, meaning I have to search through the folders and select the file to open… At least, in theory. It actually just errors trying to index the disk, which it has to do everytime I start the car (which includes switching from only electricity running to turning the engine on). I think it might have issues with the iFlash adapter I installed to replace the hdd (i sprung for the quad microSD adapter, nowadays I’d probably try the SATA SSD adapter as SATA has much quicker read times than SD cards). That’s not always the case, just this car, my old truck—with a non-stock stereo—could read it, but would take upwards of 10 minutes to finish indexing (once again, I think it’s because of how slow SD cards are).

It took a lot of digging, but I found out the reason is because of the encryption on the Apple firmware, which locks down the hardware it uses to stream as a media adapter. Barring some act of generosity on Apple’s part, we likely won’t ever see Rockbox able to stream from the iPod to another device.

AndrewZabar OP ,

Well I just want to be able to use headphones. It doesn’t have any wireless connectivity.

BaumGeist ,

In that case, you should absolutely do rockbox. It’s FOSS, linux compatible, and supports so many other audio formats beyond just mp3, WAV and Apple’s m4a and AIFF. E.g.

wildbus8979 , in Want to manage music on an old school iPod

Does your iPod support Rockbox?

everett , in Want to manage music on an old school iPod

It’s not for everyone, but if “collection of perl scripts” sounds like your jam, GnuPod still works for a CLI option.

friend_of_satan , in Has anyone achieved using their laptop as their only device?

I did this when traveling internationally in 2009. I used Skype-in to forward my USA phone number to my Skype account, but I think I made like 3 phone calls. I only used WiFi at cafes and hotels, no mobile internet service. Phones are overrated. Being offline is great.

JerkyChew , in What is the largest file transfer you have ever done?

My Chia crypto farm at its peak had about 1.5 PB of plots, each plot was I think about 100ish gigs? I’d plot them on a dedicated machine and then move them to storage for farming. I think I’d move around 10TB per night.

It was done with a combination of powershell and bash scripts on Windows, Linux, and the built in Windows Services for Linux.
