The African American Registry of the United States suggests Nancy Green and others who played the caricature of Aunt Jemima should be celebrated despite what has been widely condemned as a stereotypical and racist brand image. The registry wrote, “We celebrate the birth of Nancy Green in 1834. She was a Black storyteller and one of the first Black corporate models in the United States.”
Her financial freedom and stature as a national spokesperson enabled her to become a leading advocate against poverty and in favor of equal rights for the black population. She used her stature as a spokesperson to advocate against poverty and in favor of equal rights for individuals in Chicago.
I saw news reporting about it at the time, and if I recall correctly her descendants were actually proud of her being the mascot and thought it was cool.
Also - wow, the AI resizing is painfully shoddy. They really do just run it through Topaz and don’t even check the settings, do they? And I guess some (corporate?) YT accounts can swap out videos and not lose their view count, upload date and URL.
I wouldn’t go to one of their shows (it’s not really the same band anymore, anyway), but if you stop listening to every band where a member is a piece of shit you’re going to miss a lot of really good music.
He’s a huge fucking asshole. He’s also why I learned in my late 30s that his music WASN’T about being a bisexual atheist who mocked heteronormative Christianity. I was just projecting.
I can only listen to his music when I’m willing to think interpritation is as valid as intent.
It’s not about associating the brand with black people. Aunt Jemima was a mammy, straight out of a ministrel show. She was a racist stereotype of the loving and attentive house slave
No, she was an accurate depiction of actual Black Southern grandmas, both pre and post slavery. The whole “this represents slavery” thing was bullshit cooked up by white people. My 3rd grade teacher looked EXACTLY like Aunt Jemima and she made some bomb-ass cookies.
Not trying to be a grammar nazi, but this just screams “no one edited this before printing”. Starting a sentence with a lower-case letter, missing a comma, the weird random all-caps BOOMER words… That’s assuming it is a widely-distributed commercial product, though.
My bet is that this is a community garden of some sort.
Tomatoes are annuals. They die off every year. So if you liked a tomato from last year, and didn’t keep any of its seeds, and you want that same tomato next summer, you need to remember what you put in the ground.
