I mean tbf to that last bit “render unto caesar” can certainly be read that way, guy was a radical from a recently conquered territory, I don’t think very many Judeans of his day would have had the best impressions of where their new taxes were being spent.
The Didoche, a survival manual for christian communities during the roman persecution era, teaches that any stranger that arrives at your door should be fed and clothed for 3 days, after which point they need to make their own way in the community or move on.
Giving strangers the benefit of the doubt or taking care of those with legitimate disabilities =/= taking care of junkies or lowlifes for the duration of their lifespan .
I believe the Sermon on the Mount essentially says “clothe the naked, feed the hungry, take care of the sick.”. No limits on time.
The Didoche was written in an era where Christian communities generally had little wealth and were constantly in danger of arrest or execution. This is NOT the case in most places now, and especially not in the US, which this meme is referencing.
Nobody who’s suggesting state assistance is suggesting that we “take care” of people forever, at least not under the current system. Indeed, the data pretty easily shows that if you give people a place to stay, solid food aid, and some cash to deal with bills and miscellania, they start being functioning members of society, and get jobs and start the detox process or whatever interventions they need, really quick, like within months. This has been trialed even in the US in places like Denver, and it works.
So what you’re really saying is “I don’t want more of my money going to helping other people.” Have fun being the richest man in the cemetery.
And after the debate you have to wonder who you’re really voting for. I don’t believe he’s really calling the shots. If it’s Obama or something okay, but let’s be honest.
I’m not a fan of Trump, and many very mentally sharp people have issues with bodily functions - that’s often part of life and I apologize for using it as a slur.
I still think Biden is looking unfit to be one of the top world leaders for the next 4 1/2 years.
Mastadon is to Twitter as Lemmy is to Reddit. So you don’t really follow topics, but you can follow people if you want (I never have) and you can join communities on the topics you’re interested in. Some of the things you’ve mentioned, like Linux, are very popular/prolific here.
My advice is to set your browsing by All (and whichever of the other one makes sense to you; I usually do New, but sometimes one of the Top ones), then when you see something posted in a community that you’re interested in, instead of clicking on the post, click on the community name. In the sidebar, you can subscribe to the community. After you’ve been doing that a while, if you want you can change your browsing to Subscribed.
There’s also a Lemmy Explorer, and you can set it to Communities at the top and find the ones that are the most active or are on the subjects you’re looking for.
Having your posts seen is mostly a matter of posting to active communities with engaging topics.
Welcome! So the way Lemmy works is similar to how Reddit works. There are communities where people make posts and discuss telated topics. These communities can be as specific as a fandom for a certain book, movie, or video game, or as general as any meme that gets a giggle out of you. Luckily I am on jerboa too, so in the bottom left of the page there should be a magnifying glass that will let you search for any community you want. The majority of users here are pretty tech savvy, so the Linux and programming related communities are pretty active. Join the ones you like, block the ones you don’t like. You can also change the posts you are browsing to see only posts from communities you are Subscribed to, to Local which is only communities in the server you made your account on, and All which is anything and everything. Be prepared to see a lot of NSFW if you browse by all. Have fun and if you have any more questions, I’m sure anyone will be willing to help how they can and recommend new communities. I’m a big fan of Non-Credible Defence, but it is definitely not for everyone
Yeah… I mean… bad decisions to “fix” the country post crash followed by the absolutely nauseating problematic laws and decisions since, like citizens united and eased FTC regulations.
And all that before I was even close to being able to vote.
But here we have the boomers and silent generation demanding they know best and will never die and their kids in Gen X just sitting back and trying to make their money at the expense of generations after claiming they “feel sorry” for us without even lifting a finger to help…
Honestly fuck a few generations even though it doesn’t help against the real issue of the rich but there was a lot of adults in the room ignoring it because they still felt comfortable well past the signs.
Boomers sold out their kids and country for macmansions and 401ks (most of them did not even get either) by providing political cover for the regime looting the country and fucking the working people.
It is a really disgusting set up the more you learn the mechanics, just getting fucked at every turn.
They just needed a little bit more. One more sweet hit of that cash before they will get out of the way. And it’s not like they are doing anything young people wouldn’t do and they will live long enough to get their win eventually. /S
Man the lead levels in their corpses are probably gonna poison the soil for generations (I’m hoping it was lead and not just societal selfishness)
