PotjiePig , in Can't explain

‘Glib’ - when the words come out your mouth are fluent, but insincere and shallow.

McDonald’s Sprite tastes good, it has just the right sweetness and fizz. It’s always exactly the same wherever you go yet somewhat fake and hollow. Similarly, hotel conditioners in my experience, are cold and effective - in the way a walk in fridge is designed to keep meat fresh. Purely functional and devoid of tangible comfort. ‘Glib’.

name_NULL111653 ,

Ok, but my workplace has a walk in freezer and that place absolutely has “tangible comfort” in abundance when it’s 95° outside and the air conditioner barely keeps up with the ovens…

June ,

I worked in a kitchen at a cult on a compound in Texas for a year and that summer was a hot one. One those 100F+ days I’d head into the kitchen on my off hours and hang out in the deep freeze walk in. This was 20 years ago, but if memory serves it was set to something like -10F, and god was it wonderful to cool down in. I’d stay in for 5 or 10 minutes and come out ready to go again. I loved it.

Grimr0c ,
@Grimr0c@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure if I understand how hotel AC functionality is devoid of comfort. Wouldn’t a functional AC also be indicative of comfort? Definitely better than a Non-functional AC i suppose.

Ilovethebomb ,

It’s a tax thing, nothing to do with genitals.

GiddyGap ,

The accounting firm gets a bigger tax break by buying a pickup truck rather than a sadan or a minivan?

Ilovethebomb ,

From my understanding, a four door pickup is considered a “trade vehicle”, same as a cargo van, while a car is a different classification for FBT.

Plus, utes can haul. The Ranger can carry almost a tonne in the bed, and tow 3.5t.

GiddyGap ,

How often do accountants haul a ton and tow 3.5? Not often.

Ilovethebomb ,

This guy probably does it every weekend.

GiddyGap ,

Probably. Ok if he’s not claiming it on taxes. Tax payers should not be paying for his personal haulin’.

I’m from the Deep South. You couldn’t tell by my accent. I moved away for college and lived overseas and on both coasts. I didn’t know what a “sun shower” was until I was in my mid/late twenties and said “the devil is beating his wife” in front of my friends. That’s the only term for it I had ever heard up to that point.

Are you me? This is very similar to my story regarding this phrase. I have just heard the phrase associated with the situation. Not that rain falling while the sun is out is CALLED the devil is beating his wife. Rather, it’s just the indicator somehow.

Yea, it’s just perpetually upsetting how many idiots think peoples’ struggles literally cannot be systemically caused. It’s always because someone didn’t work hard enough or is stupid, not because their boss failed to pay them a livable wage so they were SoL when the car broke down…

onionbaggage , in Tick tock 🕚

Do people think that having 4 criminal cases pending against you is meaningless? Like… This is accurate and prosecutions are moving forward. The fuck do you want? That’s how it works.

roboticide ,

I assume it’s just the pace, but overall there’s plenty of reasons to be frustrated.

There’s already talk about how some of these cases might not be resolved until after the election, at which point, depending on how it goes, could be extremely problematic.

It feels frustrating because it’s mid-2023, and we may “run out of time” by end of 2024. People ask what the fuck was happening for 2.5 years? The reality of course is justice is not always, nor necessarily should be swift, and getting these investigations even started takes time to say nothing of collecting evidence and putting together a case. But also, 20 years ago even a single criminal indictment probably would have spelled the end of a Presidential campaign, and instead, Trump is successfully fundraising off of these charges and leading the polls.

It’s all just bonkers.

Nioxic ,

Yep. Its a slow process.

They are collecting evidence. Witness statements and such.

They are NOT rushing this. It would be a shitshow.

30 years ago you couldn’t find a reasonable place to rent for $700 in my smaller NC city. Today the prices here are around $2000 for a reasonably nice apartment. I’m not saying there isn’t somewhere in the US where those rents can be found within that time period, but I’m skeptical there isn’t some exaggeration going on here.

bemenaker ,

This is absolutely true in Cincinnati.

lyam23 ,

20 years ago you could rent an apartment for $700 that today goes for 3500? That truly is crazy.

RaoulDook , (edited )

Shit 20 years ago I rented a 2-bedroom place for $300 a month.

Most rent I’ve ever paid was $550/mo for 2-br with 1 roommate. Now I have a mortgage that’s under $800 on a 3-br house with land.

It’s achievable by living in a low cost of living area. When you live in the big city, you pay out the ass for rent and never can afford to buy.

optissima ,

Which area of NC?? I lived in Hillsborough for a time, and 10 years ago I was able to get housing for $750/m. You’re saying that 30 years ago it was more expensive? I’d like some sources, because I think you’re either misremembering at best.

lyam23 , (edited )

Greensboro, NC. Maybe not such a small town in NC, but small on a national scale. To be honest, my comment was anecdotal and from memory. But a quick search led me to deptofnumbers.com/rent/north-carolina/greensboro. It goes back to 2005 where the median residential rate was listed as $794. So, my memory is likely colored by what I considered as “acceptable” conditions as well as expense in 1993. I ended up renting a room, with no real kitchen, but a nice enough bathroom, for $400. Yes it was cheaper, but the kitchen was basically an alcove with a dorm fridge and a microwave at the end of the hall. It was not a place you’d bring a date home to. I recall that actual “nice” apartments I looked at were around $800 or so

Edit, whoops had to change to nominal dollars. 2005 median was $635.
