I like the dumb humor. I guess it’s just preference.

Dunkey reacting to getting a mundane item in a game like a chisel as if he just picked up the best item in the game: “Yes. YES! I got the chisel!” never fails to crack me up.

Acid Spy****___

Acid Spy is a first person stealth action game set in a cyberpunk universe. Infiltrate heavily guarded bases and take down your enemies with skill and finesse. Master the art of quick, deadly stealth to become the acid spy.

Sharmat , (edited ) in Actual Hidden Gems on Steam

The Age of Decadence is CRPG set in a post-apocalypse ish, in which an analogue to the Roman Empire ruled most of the world until the collapse of civilisation, now it’s mostly city states struggling to survive and reclaim the old magitek of the empire.

Underrail: Life on earth’s surface has been made inhospitable ages ago, and the remains of humanity now live in the metro system called underrail and the caverns around it.

Both are isometric, turn based games that focus on combat and exploration. And they are hard. Builds are incredibly important, almost min maxing but they have a wide range of viable builds, especially the first one where you can play the entire game without fighting a single battle, all through alternative solutions and skill checks.

Hieracosphinx OP ,

Have you played Colony Ship, by the same devs as Age of Decadence? I’ve been keeping an eye on it for a while and looks to be real close to its 1.0 release, but I’ve not heard or read a lot about it.

Sharmat ,

No actually, I didn’t knew it was a thing. Added to my wishlist for when it’s released.

    How can you be under leveled? Isn’t Alduin level scaled?

    Kolanaki ,
    @Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

    Yes and no.

    Everything still has a minimum level. Alduin being the final boss is still pretty high level at his lowest level. Same with the Dragon Priests. Those dudes are almost impossible when you’re less than level 10.

    If you just did the MQ and nothing else, even if you kill everything in your path during the dungeons, you’ll barely have leveled. You won’t level at if you just run through everything!

    Great list thanks.

    XCOM: Enemy Within

    The fishing village mission...I had my team stand their ground as wave after wave of bugs poured out of that rotting carcass. It seemed like a lot, but I figured it was meant to force me to use every advantage I could find. I lost count of how many bugs we killed. I don’t know how long it took. Maybe an hour? Eventually, new bugs stopped appearing. We got every last one of them, and all my soldiers walked back to the extraction point. I didn’t realize until I found some online comments about that mission that I was supposed to run away as fast as possible when the bugs first appeared.

    Piers ,

    I think they’ve added a max turn timer from the point you call in the airstrike now.

    Kolanaki ,
    @Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

    That was added in an update, cuz I remembering having the same experience when I got the game at launch.

    Now because I had gotten used to that, I see the move timer as a challenge to wipe out all the chrysalids before we all die to an airstrike. 😏

    On my first play through, I completely misunderstood Mass Effect and basically played it like a standard shooter. Hardly used power, didn’t talk to anyone and more or less just went from main mission to main mission.

    The amount of stuff I missed out on, in retrospect, is staggering. I’m so glad I gave this game another try because I really did not understand what all the fuss was about.

    Half Life. Final boss fight. Not enough ammo and I couldn’t be bothered to go several hours of saves back to replay and conserve ammo.

    I’m playing a similar game called just “Life”. I seem to have misplaced the manual for it which is quite the hurdle because there are no save/restore points.

    It’s an open-world game and there are many NPC’s, but the few bosses seem randomly placed (at least, I haven’t found any pattern to it) and what’s worse is that you can’t really tell them apart from regular NPC’s until you’ve already engaged them! Got burned by that a fair bit more than once.

    I’ve considered just starting over but the prospect of losing literally my entire progress… 😬

    I got stuck on Resident Evil Rebirth for the same reason. Took me years before I motivating myself to give it an other shot.

    @Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

    I have a similar experience with Quake’s final boss. It’s the only thing in the entire game you don’t kill by shooting. Took me 3 freaking days to figure it out.

    It’s stupid as hell because it’s like the easiest thing to do, but no game had anything remotely like that, and it wasn’t a mechanic shown to the player at all in SP (if you don’t know you have to telefrag the boss by jumping into a gate when a purple spikey thing flying around the room clips through the boss).

    Thanks for the list, a few games really caught my eye.

    Here is my contribution - Tametsi

    A minesweeper which has hand-crafted levels so you can always solve it with logic instead of relying on luck when you are out of logical moves.

    RUINER: Isometric twin-stick shooter with a 10/10 soundtrack. Basically zero advertisement, i only ever found out about it because I listen to similar music and got the soundtrack reccomended to me by the YT algorithm.

    CurlyWurlies4All ,
    @CurlyWurlies4All@prxs.site avatar

    Oh I keep seeing this being recommended to me. How does it compare to The Ascent?

    Hieracosphinx OP ,

    The Ascent is a longer game and leans harder into RPG elements than Ruiner ever does. For me, Ruiner ran better and like @Catastrophic235 says, the music is incredible. Blows The Ascent’s soundtrack out of the water. Ruiner might have slightly tighter controls too, but I’d have to replay to confirm since I played it with a mouse/keyboard while I played The Ascent with a controller.

    Mugmoor ,
    @Mugmoor@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    I still remember the Dropdy thread on SomethingAwful. Crazy that it turned into an actual game!

    Catastrophic235 ,
    @Catastrophic235@midwest.social avatar

    Never played the ascent but heard it was meh. Controls for Ruiner were pretty tight, my only complaint is that I’d sometimes get caught on an object/wall that wasn’t very easy to see, but it was never more than a minor inconvenience.

    Hieracosphinx OP ,

    I’ve seen Tametsi, Hexcells, and Bombe continually recommended online as hidden gems but I’ve put off buying any because I’m not much of a Minesweeper fan. I should really give them a try sometime though, since I think the luck aspect is my least favorite part of Minesweeper. Thanks for sharing!

    Dymonika ,

    Hexceed is free, lite Hexcells, I read, if you want to try before you buy.

    lotanis ,

    I bought Tametsi recently based at another recommendation thread. It’s really good - it eliminates the big issue with minesweeper which is that sometimes you have to guess. In Tametsi you always have enough information for your next move which completely changes how it feels. It almost ends up feeling more like Sudoku with the “ok so if that’s true then that can’t be true” type steps in logic.

    Megaman_EXE , in whats a game that you got significantly far into, only to realize you were doing something wrong or missing a key feature/ability altogether?

    In the game bug fables I missed that there was a badge shop in one of the starting areas. I played through most of the game without using any of those badges. You don’t need them, but it’s nice to have options

    GhostMatter , in whats a game that you got significantly far into, only to realize you were doing something wrong or missing a key feature/ability altogether?

    “Advanced” combat in The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

    Most of the time combat is a slog and it’s the least interesting part of the games. I just get strong weapons and hit the enemies with them, or shoot them from afar. I don’t think I even broke more than 5 shields per game, and barely did that slow motion avoid thing. It’s much faster to just slash and slash, stagger, slash, etc.

    Hell, a lot of the devices in TotK are useless because I can just slash or shoot the enemies myself. Tried them out once in shrines and that’s it.

    Nomad ,

    Jup, same here. Got the extension mode and in master mode this is suddenly all required.

    brsrklf ,

    Honestly, no matter how much strategy you’re using, Master Mode is not exactly balanced. The sword trials in particular become unbearable.

    Kolanaki ,
    @Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

    I understood it in BOTW, but it was still frustrating to pull off compared to just stocking up good weapons and beating them with it.

    TOTK, on the other hand, is hella fun. Now instead of having to string together odd mechanics to maybe make funny stuff happen, I can build a flying fortress of doom that drops bombs and shoots lasers. It also kills them way faster than going in and fighting them normally.

    HalJor , in whats a game that you got significantly far into, only to realize you were doing something wrong or missing a key feature/ability altogether?
    @HalJor@beehaw.org avatar

    I’m currently playing Diablo IV and I generally refuse to use the healing stations and stat-boosting shrines scattered around the map. I guess I want to save them for later in case they don’t respawn or something. I also don’t know what the shrines do until/unless I hit them so I don’t know if they’re worth triggering or not. I’m getting by without them so far, so it’s okay, maybe?

    Pseu ,

    The shrines respawn over time. No need to worry about consuming them. The Lillith statues are permanent stat boosts to all characters, not activating them when you encounter them is harmful.

    The shrines aren’t really a balance element, because they only last a minute or so, and usually make you hilariously overpowered for a little bit.

    So much time spent playing Sid Meier’s Pirates! I think there was a remake that was faithful to the original with updated graphics, and it was great times. Capture ships, attack forts, trade goods.l… just a great game.

    liv ,

    That was such a cool game! I remember I had this really weird fixation on marrying the Governer’s daughter from Curacao.

    tuckerm ,

    Capture ships, attack forts, trade goods.l… just a great game.

    I love games in that genre, they're so endlessly playable. The Mount & Blade series is kind of like a more recent take on that same idea. And X4 Foundations is like that but in space.

    liminis ,

    Sands of Time was so cool. That series was flawed (Warrior Within was the emo-most game in an era full of emo sequels as the original audience reached adolescence), but I’m sad that it essentially got canceled by warping into AC.

    HowlsSophie ,

    Agreed. I was pretty upset that the series progressed the way it did and the third one…we just don’t talk about that.

    HowlsSophie ,

    Sands of Time has the most beautiful cutscenes, that was my favorite part of the game.

    Prox , in What forgotten cult classic games are worth revisiting?

    Hybrid Heaven on N64. Great game with a super interesting battle mechanic. I’ve never played anything else quite like it. Maybe The Surge would be the closest system, wherein you can target specific body parts for interesting effects. But you can’t suplex an alligator in The Surge.
