regul , in Is Gabe Newell a hardcore anarchist?

not the good kind

he literally bought one of those new zealand prepper bunkers

communist ,
@communist@beehaw.org avatar

Why does that make him bad?

EvilColeslaw ,
@EvilColeslaw@beehaw.org avatar

Typically the tech bro billionaires buying those tend to fall into the realm of people who expect to be unquestioned dictators of their own little fiefdoms in a post-apocalyose scenario. To the point of shock collars to keep other people in line, etc.

Look, I think billionaires existing is ridiculous, look at my username, but that seems like a leap to me.

comicallycluttered ,

You may enjoy these two reads:

newyorker.com/…/doomsday-prep-for-the-super-rich

Always enjoyed this gem:

Huffman has calculated that, in the event of a disaster, he would seek out some form of community: “Being around other people is a good thing. I also have this somewhat egotistical view that I’m a pretty good leader. I will probably be in charge, or at least not a slave, when push comes to shove.”

This one is also interesting:

…medium.com/survival-of-the-richest-9ef6cddd0cc1

Relevant to the thread:

Finally, the CEO of a brokerage house explained that he had nearly completed building his own underground bunker system and asked, “How do I maintain authority over my security force after the event?”

[…]

This single question occupied us for the rest of the hour. They knew armed guards would be required to protect their compounds from the angry mobs. But how would they pay the guards once money was worthless? What would stop the guards from choosing their own leader? The billionaires considered using special combination locks on the food supply that only they knew. Or making guards wear disciplinary collars of some kind in return for their survival. Or maybe building robots to serve as guards and workers — if that technology could be developed in time.

They live in a different reality. These questions are normal for them. Not all of them, obviously, but the doomsday prep shit is aaaallll over Silicon Valley and the rich in general.

PenguinTD ,

And they are also dumb in that situation where people with guns would wear such collar and instead torture you until you spit out the combination. There are no unbreakable lock where the weakest link is human. Human can be fucking nasty in situation like that.

Also, the guards could simply cut off power supply(to the storage/locks) and brute force it to be traditional bunker. Before the overlord wannabe comes to their new hideout.

Piers ,

Also the tiny tiny percentage of cases where this doesn’t happen will just mean that the combined forces of the former guards from the other bunkers come kill everyone and take their stuff by force.

Astonishing level of self-delusion by people to think they can use their position of wealth and power in one society to protect themselves and maintain that wealth and power if they cause that society to entirely fail.

Ultimately, most of these people have that wealth and power because they are so frightened and insecure that they cannot let a moment pass without fighting and clawing to have more power as a false sense of security.

Harmageddon , in A recommendation pleading post (with a twist)

Subnautica does have freedom and fun modes letting you ignore food and stuff like that. But I will say skipping the crafting, it loses something. The gradual increase in depth and pressure you can take is really satisfying.

I like turning off food and water needs though. That’s just tedious

Hieracosphinx , in A recommendation pleading post (with a twist)

APICO maybe? It’s got some crafting, but is mostly pretty chill, concentrating on breeding bees.

Dorfromantik is relatively mindless. You place tiles and create landscapes. There’s nice music too. There’s a sort of strategy to it, but it’s pretty light. Unlocking new tiles is the main grind. If you wanted a bit more thought involved, just about any turn-based strategy like Civilization 6 should do.

If you want to keep to JRPGs but at a calmer pace than FF7R, False Skies might be up your alley. ARPGs like Chronicon are also low on the intense/concentration scale (although like most ARPGs, you shouldn’t expect much of a story).

But more than any of those, I think Dave the Diver is your best bet. Ocean theme, doesn’t require great concentration (besides the odd minigame), and has a bunch to be taken in at your own pace.

domage ,

Just got Dave the Diver. That’s an awesome pick for the described specifications :0)

jmanes , in What game do you think came closest to being "perfect"?

Super Mario RPG for SNES. … I’m old

IcedCoffeeBitch ,

Easily one of my favorite RPGs.

Also it’s getting a remaster(and I’m not old :P) so there are and/or will be more young fans than what you realize

That’s not anarchy, that’s libertarianism. And to answer your question, at least going on People Make Games’s investigation of Valve’s culture, he does seem to be very libertarian.

cnnrduncan , in Is Gabe Newell a hardcore anarchist?

He’s a billionaire who owns a company that has pulled some shady (and illegal) anti-consumer bullshit in the past, I’d say it’s pretty unlikely that he’s a anarchist - more likely, the flat management structure and use of FOSS software is simply profitable.

dawt , in Does BioWare now regret erasing their community forums?

I don’t have much of an opinion on the bioware forums, but man - it’s crazy to think about this period as the collapse of web2. I mean, I’m aware of it, but somehow, giving it that title seems so real.

The online spaces I’ve spent most of my time in are collapsing, and all that’ll be left is the shambling, soulless husks of bankrupt cryptocurrencies. I guess we can just go ahead and skip straight to web4?

I’ve been in mourning lately over this

legion , in What game do you think came closest to being "perfect"?

Perfection is overrated. Most of my favorite gaming experiences are with games of which I would be able to cite plenty of flaws.

I like games with sharp edges.

That said, there are a lot of good games being mentioned in these comments.

zagaberoo ,

What’s a favorite example of a game you love in spite of genuinely painful sharp edges?

Ecksell , in Aonuma says Nintendo not thinking about classic style Zelda games at the moment. Does anyone think it likely they could use a third party developer again, like when Capcom made the Minish Cap ?

Elkaki123 , in Developer claims Steam is rejecting games with AI-generated artwork

“Developer claims” didn’t steam literally announce this like 2 days ago??

thingsiplay , in Does BioWare now regret erasing their community forums?

If they are dumb, they bring the forums back in form of Subreddits. If they are smart, they bring them back in the Fediverse. Using Twitter as a discussion platform is a dumb idea. The most likely thing that would probably happen is, they bring discussions to Discord…

Oh boy, the odds are not good. Too many shiny alternatives to fail and only one way to make it right.

alehel ,

I just want a phpBB forum ☹️. So tired of services like discord being used as a “forum”.

Ignacio ,

Remember that this exists.

loops , in Developer claims Steam is rejecting games with AI-generated artwork

Not surprised with Open AI (and others I presume) being sued for their data collection practices. I doubt steam wants to be close to that in any way.

Phroon , in Riven - Infos about the remake by Cyan

Riven is quite possibly my favorite game ever. I had so much fun just wandering around immersing myself in the world.

millie , in Valve won’t publish games that feature copyright-infringing AI assets | Engadget

I feel like this is less of a big decision and more of a ‘duh’ sort of situation. To my understanding this isn’t saying that all AI art violates copyright, but that AI art which does violate copyright can’t be used.

Like if i took a picture of Darth Vader and handed it to NightCafe to fool around with, that still belongs to Disney. Steam is legally required to act if a valid DMCA is sent, and to adhere to the court’s ruling in the case of a dispute.

I feel like this is a reassurance that they intend to obey copyright law rather than a restriction of all AI art. Basically they’re saying that if you DMCA someone in good faith on the basis of derivative works, they’ll play ball.

Dominic ,

Right, the phrasing is “copyright-infringing AI assets” rather than a much more controversial “all AI assets, due to copyright-infringement concerns.”

I do think there’s a bigger discussion that we need to have about the ethics and legality of AI training and generation. These models can reproduce exact copies of existing works (see: Speak, Memory: An Archaeology of Books Known to ChatGPT/GPT-4).

millie ,

Sure, but plagiarism isn’t unique to LLMs. I could get an AI to produce something preexisting word for word, but that’s on my use of the model, not on the LLM.

I get the concerns about extrapolating how to create works similar to those made by humans from actual human works, but that’s how people learn to make stuff too. We experience art and learn from it in order to enrich our lives, and to progress as artists ourselves.

To me, the power put into the hands of creators to work without the need for corporate interference is well worth the consideration of LLMs learning from the things we’re all putting out there in public.

Frell , in What game do you think came closest to being "perfect"?

Outer Wilds. I consider it the best video game ever made and I’ve spent quite some time thinking about if there’s something I could add, change or remove that would improve it and so far I’ve yet to come up with anything of substance (beyond tiny QoL changes or reeeally nitpicky stuff).

MrBobDobalina ,

I’ve just joined beehaw, this is my first browse, and one of the first comments I see is for Outer Wilds… Feels good. One of my favourite games / stories / media / art pieces ever. I love it and all of the brilliant minds behind it, I’ve never thought so about a game once finished anywhere near as much as this one.

interolivary ,
@interolivary@beehaw.org avatar

Outer Wilds is one of the more interesting games to come out in recent memory, but personally I just didn’t like the

spoilerfairly tight (for me) time limit. I like to do things at a slower pace for a variety of reasons, and I’d love to have a way to change the time scale so that things don’t happen in just 20-something minutes. I know it theoretically gives you infinite time to explore and do stuff, but that one cycle is always ~20 minutes, and that’s what I’d love to be able to slow down.

MoonRocketeer ,

I still need to get around playing the DLC but I feel like I’d need to watch a video to get caught up on the story. That said, yeah, the gameplay and story is absolutely incredible. Perfectly-executed mystery box.

DeadSpy2 ,

You could always add the DLC :D (I’m half joking of course, but it’s soooo good. I think it’s on par, if not a little bit better, than the main game.)
