WagesOf , in Steam Deck VS rivals

I had a deck for a while and have sold it in favor of the ROG Ally. It requires a lot of work to get its software out of your way but after tearing all of thw asus crap out, including the trash services who's only purpose is to put their broken ass software back on against the end users' wishes I've got a matching software experience on it.

I just could not give up the vrr screen, it makes the Ally beat out the deck for my uses and none of the $1200+ devices really come close either.

I’ve been playing Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS, and Kittens & Yarn on the Switch. (A little bit of Qube Cross, too, depending on whether it or Kittens & Yarn is more frustrating)

Was going to be BG3 on PS5 until I had the horrible realization it isn't out until September.

So I guess it's still ESO with some Rocket League mashed in sometimes. I did finally clear vCR+3 on Saturday. Only hardmodes I'm missing now is Dreadsail, Rock Grove, and the new one, Sanity's Edge, but that's more just cause I haven't tried much.

Kicking my way through Ultima I, a partner gave me two more weeks to beat it and I think I can probably do it in one… day… if I get my mind into it.

Also trying to beat Guardian Tales in the same two weeks since it’s been on my phone so long. I want to get it off my phone so I have more room for other things, but I feel like I’m far enough into it I shouldn’t just toss it away without completing it.

Been going through Borderlands 3. The general planet trotting is a weird way to introduce new environments instead of just saying Pandora has more than one climate. Shooting is entertaining, and the twins are somewhat amusing villains - though the story does retread the old trap of “Oh no, the big bad villains just killed [powerful named character], we can’t stop them!” too often for a game where I will only get bigger guns.

Played a little bit of Death’s Door. Its a good isometric action game and the way the world was crafted stands out very well. There’s something about the way everything looks, and how enemies stay dead after you defeated them, which makes the whole landscape eerie and unpleasant, even if overall the game doesn’t seem to be quite depressing.

Picked up Guardians of the Galaxy again, with the intent of finishing it off for real. The game is surprisingly very good, but also quite slow. They clearly wanted to give a lot of time for characters’ back and forth, which isn’t bad given that the game spends a significant amount of effort making them likable and investing in their growth but it also makes the game as chatty as your average RPG but with less interactions. Looks fantastic and has surprisingly good writing.

Considering giving Original Sin 2 a retry given all the current Larian hype.

How are these not getting sued? Especially the fpga must be violating some hardware patents

Helvedeshunden ,

Remember that one of the few positives the DMCA included was exceptions for interoperability. Also, these pieces of hardware are generally analyzed and reimplemented rather than copied - which steps outside of patents in general, as far as I know (IANAL). Many ship with roms and games included, though, which is generally not allowed in most countries.

Perhaps not quite as quest driven, but if you like open world combat, check out the Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War games. Don’t take the story too seriously, but they are a fantastic good time.

Enemies that see how to approach them, and if you are too same-y they’ll adapt. Focus too much on stealth kills? Enemies have stealth pierceing guards. Tend to go direct melee combat? Big bruiser show up that force you to respect them and dodge. They are not perfect games, and they’re a bit older these days, but nothing beats the hunter turn hunted experience of that first play through. I’ve beaten it years ago, but once in a while I just let my castle fall and go on an orc hunting spree to mastermind a take over once again.

How much do you care about the actual combat?

There are an absolute ton of games on Steam that cover the exploring and doing quests vibe and the amount of combat in them varies from none to some but not the main focus of the game. Here’s a few I’ve tried:

Also practically anything in the survival and MMORPG genres are full of just chilling in the world content too.

ELLIOTTCABLE ,

Oh man Astroneer is so good — but I don’t think it’s up OP’s alley. There’s no quests to speak of, or even goals really, besides the 1. tutorial stuff, and 2. overall “reach the end” — besides that, it’s up to you to be self-directed.

Context: my breath-of-the-wild loving partners didn’t much get into Astroneer, unless I specifically set them goals and they didn’t have to figure anything out for themselves. :P (Well, one of them, at least …)

I think the “map marker check mark” dopamine game is a whole different thing from ‘true’ open-world … well, that’d unnecessarily exclusionary. Neither one is truer than the other. But they’re definitely extremely different.

Anyway, OP, my suggestion in that vibe would definitely be the Fallout or Assassin’s Creed serieses. Or Horizon: Zero Dawn! Great sidequest-driven, exploration-heavy, gigaaaaaantic games, all of them!

I have a retroid pocket 3+ and a funky S. the rp3+ has seen maybe 180 hours of use since I got it last year. gamecube and PS2 games are a little fiddly, both emulators run much better with versions that don’t come preloaded. it’s gotten the most mileage with psp games. it will also run a version of source engine for portal/half life, and openMW for Morrowind. those also take some doing with moving install files from PC to their respective folders. Highly recommend.

the funkey s is a delightful little handheld that’s seen probably 30 hours of use, mostly pokemon gold edition, tied with chrono cross. it’s honestly too small but that’s also the reason it ends up conveniently in my bag or glove box until I suddenly need to kill half an hour. the resolution is a little poor for GBA/PSX games. shines with GBC. I don’t recommend it at the $80 price point unless you’re very enthusiastic about the small size.

I would highly recommend A Story About My Uncle. It took me about 6 hours to get all the things and do the whole story. It’s a somewhat challenging first-person platfomer. Basic setup for the story is your Uncle is an inventor and adventurer. He disappeared and you find a note and a device in his attic, the device teleports you to a different world/dimension, and you make friends and find adventure along the way.

inexplicablehaddock , in Phantom Liberty Looks Like the Cyberpunk 2077 CD Projekt Pitched From the Start - IGN

I’m cautiously excited. Because if they do pull it off, it’s gonna be great. But just keep in mind that Cyberpunk 2077 looked like “the Cyberpunk 2077 CDPR pitched from the start” in the trailers. Until reviewers get their hands on copies, take everything with a pinch of salt.
