Is it just me, or have the comments on Lemmy become extra aggressive over the past 3 months?

I feel like things on Lemmy were pretty chill several months ago, and that’s started to change.

People used to talk each other like they would talk to a neighbor. Now I get the sense that people have become quick to be negative, attack, and not be constructive.

Am I crazy in feeling like the vibe has changed?

One thing I love about lemmy coming in from reddit is that people don’t vote like sheep, so there’s lots of cases where your votes balance out. Meanwhile on reddit if you get even 3 downvotes within the first few minutes your comment is doomed to get slammed into the 50s.

Just lots of trolls lately, most communities are fine but some have poor moderation so these types of comments/posts take some time to get deleted. All the communities I’m browsing are quite chill.

Sounds about right. I’ve noticed on Lemmy people get a hard on for calling Americans stupid because “they don’t know the metric system”. Even though I’ve explained a few times that a) we use both, depending on the situation and b) there are other countries that do the same

I blame the Israel/Palestine conflict heating up again. It made it more apparent how much antisemitism was lurking below the surface. Ecer since it seems like there’s a significant divide even on communities that aren’t news and politics focused.

Yeah, that’s definitely what the conflict brought to light. Not the fact that people and most nations are happy to allow or even support literal genocide and ethnic cleansing as long as it’s done by people they like against people they don’t like.

Maybe it’s the instances I frequent, but almost all of the “antisemitism” I’ve been seeing is actually anti-Zionism/non-Zionism, which are not antisemitism, despite Zionists’ unending efforts to conflate the them. In fact, Zionist antisemitism is a thing.

Most claims I see are saying it’s just criticism of Israel, and then excusing literally anything hamas/Palestine does as totally legitimate, which is way more than being anti-zionist.

sometimes, people need to be told they're stupid/shitty/etc. it just makes me feel better. i'm not trying to win a debate, i just don't want to hold my tongue because fuck you. with everyone so afraid of being cringe or big mad lol, there's no room left for healthy expressions of anger. anger is a human trait. anger is a useful tool. anger gets shit done. don't be afraid of your anger. tell someone they're stupid today. they might need to hear it.

I honestly haven't noticed any changes. 2 months after the rexodus and the honeymoon phase ended, things stabilized. Some drama with tankies but not much else. People here are just as generally rude or kind as they’ve ever been.

The subject of the arguments is certainly politics (and war and religion), but the source of the arguments is strongly differing world views.

Despite what we’d like to believe about ourselves, humans are not well-adapted to being exposed to a wide variety of differing viewpoints. We evolved in small, racially and socially homogenous groups, for the most part. Up until the Industrial Revolution, the vast majority of humanity lived and died within 30 miles of where they were born, and only had daily interaction with what was essentially an extended family.

Travel, mass immigration, and the Internet changed all that. Being exposed to such a diversity of opinion on a daily basis quite simply breaks our brains. It causes a tremendous amount of internal conflict and stress, for some more than others. That constant strain becomes more intense when there is war, such as in Gaza and Ukraine, or particularly divisive politics. There are obviously some extremely contentious elections coming up, including the US election, which has tremendous global implications. There are, no doubt, people on Lemmy right now for whom the result of the US election is a matter of life and death, and yet they aren’t US citizens and can’t vote.

We should all take a chill pill and try to be less confrontational and use less emotionally-charged language when it comes to hot button issues. The politics and news subs are an avalanche of charged words and phrases like genocide, fascist, apartheid, Nazi, racist, transphobic, anti-gay, religious zealot, and many others. Those are fighting words. Deserved or not, words like that not only reflect, but also create, a lot of emotional dissonance and stress, which lead to emotionally charged arguments.
