Oh cool, a marketing person played horizon zero dawn forbidden West and decided Vegas holograms were a great idea.

Wogi ,

Or cyberpunk. Or watched Blade Runner.

Sky holograms are pretty common in corpo dystopia fiction. And maybe future non fiction. Jesus

Chariotwheel ,

I mean, we have some clear aspects of what was feared. I think the closest country currently is South Korea, given how powerful the corporations are there.

It goes to the point where the main thing young people work towards is the Samsung Aptitude Test, there are whole cities that basically just belong to Samsung. From the factory to the supermarkets where the factory workers shop to the flats the workers live in and spend their time off using Samsung devices.

captainlezbian ,

So company towns that haven’t started issuing scrip yet. My country tried that for a while. It ended in literal class warfare.

toasteecup ,

I’m curious what country, I want to learn up on some history.

captainlezbian ,

United States. Look into Appalachian coal miner union history. The company towns were part of the story but not the whole of the exploitation of the workers. The Battle of Blair Mountain is the most famous incident. Also the music involved fucking slaps.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar
toasteecup ,

Time for a deep dive, even taking APUSH we really only scratched the surface of this incident. I know even to know the workers were truly wage slaves but I don’t know all of the gory details.

captainlezbian ,

Yeah that makes sense. They were absolutely kept in economic bondage, with brutal treatment. And when they resisted tensions escalated. They matched to unionize and the bosses brought in mercenaries. Gunfire was exchanged, and at times machine guns were mounted to trains or nested in mountains to stop strikers. Teenagers charged them.

It’s worth learning more. If for no other reason than because Appalachia is a special part of the country that’s often misunderstood and it helps put their distrust of outsiders into context

captainlezbian ,

The problem with cyberpunk fiction is that some people have no media literacy and a lot of money and decide their company should do things from their favorite stories.

Zoboomafoo ,
@Zoboomafoo@lemmy.world avatar

My problem is that it’s too real to enjoy

InvaderDJ ,

Lack of media literacy is becoming a huge problem for society. People either think fiction is reality or just literally don’t understand satire, parody, and cautionary tales.

You’re telling me that in 2013 somebody made a company with the same name as a fictional company in 1966 novel Make Room Make Room! about overcrowded earth and the 1977 movie Soylent Green wherein they FEED PEOPLE TO OTHER PEOPLE AND LIE ABOUT IT?

That’s pretty awful. I feel like that’s the absolute bottom of the barrel desperation for exposure. Why didn’t they just call it LentSoya or something?

Anticorp ,

Because they’re not trying to hide what they are. They’re telling people clear as day, and people are still trying to wrap their heads around it, inventing all sorts of excuses for the behavior of obviously evil companies.

DessertStorms ,

Many people like to say that if they had a time machine they would go back and kill Hitler or some other valiant act of heroism that would prevent the death of millions.

Yet when faced with the real possibility of killing (or even just properly holding accountable - removal from society, redistribution of resources of) an individual now, who is already responsible for millions of deaths by virtue of withholding resources alone, never mind the active oppression and exploitation of billions that go in to maintaining the system that allows them their power, people suddenly become squeamish.

But not even at the idea of them doing it, but at the idea of anyone doing it (to the point of actively opposing it), and that's just so fucking frustrating, that people can't see the glaringly obvious dictators "of tomorrow", who already literally control everything and are actively getting away with a lot shit directly out of the fascist playbook today, how anyone can still deny it to themselves just blows my mind.

We're never going to get a better future as long as so many people refuse to accept that we're never going to be given it by those living the high life off of our backs.

solarvector ,

Not to take away from anything you just said, but it’s a different thing to claim you would do something in an impossible and hypothetical scenario, than to name a currently powerful person and say you’d make them dead if you could.

The difference is that I can look up a moment in history when Hitler was vulnerable and then kill him with zero consequences.

There would be a lot of consequences for killing anyone today, and it’d be really hard to kill anyone that matters.

LemmysMum ,

The most difficult tasks are the most rewarding.

Rodeo ,

That begets the question, why do you feel okay with murder when there are no consequences?

Were you to find yourself in such a situation with say the CEO of Nestle or Nike, or Rupert Murdoch, or whomever you fancy, where you suddenly realize you have an opportunity to murder that person without consequence, would you do so?

queermunist , (edited )

Like, could you at least try to act like the comment is actually in response to the content of the post. Slip one line in there about “ads” or “night sky” or something, anything, that makes it sound like you’re genuinely responding to the post and not just deploying the speech you had in your back pocket.

Bird shot from a long barrel should reach high enough, and the descending pellets would do minimal damage to property and people.

Shouldn’t need a ton of power from the shot, just enough for the drone rotors to smack into and snap.

Anyone who’s played Cyberpunk 2077 might remember the big ads projected into the sky above the city. It adds a really cool dystopian atmosphere to the game.

In real life it would be a nightmare come true.

Comment105 ,

It’s not theoretical, look up Candy Crush New York.

They can start going all out with regular ad programming over tier 1 cities many times each day almost as soon as they find themselves able to get away with it.

It’s will be regular within a few years if we let it.

One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. Calling the act of fighting back against corporations “terrorism” doesn’t make the act itself bad or wrong, nor does it dissuade anyone from carrying it out, it’s just virtue signalling to show everyone else which side of the fence you’re positioning yourself on. The wrong side.

American_Communist22 ,
@American_Communist22@lemmygrad.ml avatar

oh silly I’m from lemmygrad, I am definitely on the side of terrorism. I just want the terms defined properly, because hiding your terms and aims behind vague descriptions is ill-advised and will lead to disaster. Do not desensitize political action, realize what it is, and agree with it.

Rockyrikoko ,

Companies ≠ Government

American_Communist22 ,

The government is tied to corporations. The Government exists to carry out the will of the monopolies, and reign in the populace. Throwing billions of dollars to corrupt politicians to carry out their aims does not a democracy make.

Okokimup ,
@Okokimup@lemmy.world avatar

I can play this game too. Oh so murdering people for the sake of a political agenda is just as chill as damaging property?

American_Communist22 ,
@American_Communist22@lemmygrad.ml avatar

damaging property is nothing. Especially the property of the rich use to try to delude us

humans are a different matter, but if your existence relies on the exploitation of the earth, I think they’ve declared war against every other person alive. Politics is a reflection of human wills and goals, not some thing you snark at from your couch scrolling tiktok. Politics is every thought and idea of change and invention. Every murder is a political murder. If it is a man who beat his wife to death that is a reinforcement of patriarchy. If a driver falls asleep at the wheel and hits a biker, that is a result of capitalist overworking and insufficient bike infrastructure.

All of this is a direct result of capitalism, which the rich enforce the corrupt and aged economy with their wealth. These passive deaths are also murder, so should we just do nothing? Just wait for the same people who’ve enslaved the world to free us because we asked? You have morals, they would not think twice about killing everyone you know if it meant defending their wealth. Do not allow them to have all the power because of a false morality.

Dude we’re going to be hard pressed to even get the range needed to take out part of the drone swarm, and you’re worried about collateral damage?

I’m sorry but you can no longer be a part of Project Mayhem.

I guess you could launch a rocket with an EMP on it, to get it closer. And hopefully not take down a plane by accident? Yeah this idea is dumb.

x4740N ,
@x4740N@lemmy.world avatar

Someone could build an emp with a wave guide in their garage and just aim them at the drones

They should project the night sky into city skies. As long as it doesn’t add significantly to light pollution, I wouldn’t be suprised if that would be good for people’s mental health

Poggervania ,
@Poggervania@kbin.social avatar

Or we could introduce more strict light pollution laws instead. Big Island has some of the most beautiful night skies and it’s because they basically have to mandate using sodium lights to keep the light pollution super low for the telescopes on Mauna Kea.

DarthBueller ,

The fact that cities are continuing to buy white streetlights that have intense green spectrum emissions despite light-pollution being a widespread and well-known issue, is beyond me. Even if you’re going for the energy efficiency of LEDs over the monochromatic sodium lights, it is not cost prohibitive to slightly adjust the spectrum. Instead we have stupidly bright lights high in green light that blow out night vision, that then break and turn purple. It pisses me off to no end.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

i mean we could also just institute light pollution measures like many places worldwide already have, but i guess that’s not as cool

echodot ,

This is such a stupid idea on so many levels but mostly because it’s functionally impossible. The amount of satellites that would need to be launched in order to be able to form a visible image from the surface of the Earth would be prohibitively expensive and complicated to organise. They would all crash into each other within about 15 minutes - because orbits are inherently chaotic, and because of the ultra low altitude they’d have to maintain to make it remotely visible, they would burn up in the atmosphere almost instantly.

Basically no one with even a high school level education is actually proposing this.

This is basically just rage bate.

Timecircleline ,

Wouldn’t they be more likely to use drones than satellites?

SkyeStarfall ,

Yeah, and we already have drone lightshows

It would especially be effective in cities, with a high density of people. And the base cost would not be that large compared to normal advertising spots, which already go for a lot of money.

Basically, if it was legal, it would have already been done.

adrian783 ,

Trump won 2nd term and Russia took Ukraine in 3 weeks

HawlSera ,

What are you on?

adrian783 ,

is prime universe suppose to be the good universe or something?

HawlSera ,

The Prime Universe is a term in science fiction to determine the Main Universe. The universe that the story centers around is the “Prime Universe”, deviations from this are “Alternate Universes”

I’m claiming that because our world is so absurd in ways that would seem impossible if it wasn’t literally happening in front of us, we are obviously not the Prime Universe, as it makes no realistic since that Jan 6th could have happened without a swift military response, that Donald Trump could be President, that souls aren’t real, that we have so much proof for aliens yet no aliens, or that men like Elon Musk could actually be considered our “Best and brightest”… Making it transparent that we in fact, a bizarre “What-If” scenario

adrian783 ,

oh I thought prime universe means alternate universe as the math apostrophe symbol is pronounced prime and often denotes (mathematical) derivative

HawlSera ,

In this instance, think of it as “Short for Primary”

Universal pay is implemented worldwide, Amazon goes bankrupt. Tipping culture in the US ends. Nestlé board of trustees and executive committee are rounded up and hunted for sport by Tankies…capitalists tune in to the reality based tv show and place enough bets to wipe out world debt.
