I remember seeing a lot of people expand their horizons on all kinds of topics when the internet first started catching on.

Now I think it was because they were actively looking for understanding something new, and did not represent the general population.

hydroptic OP , (edited )

Now I think it was because they were actively looking for understanding something new, and did not represent the general population.

Assuming that intelligence (and I don’t mean IQ or any other psychometric “proxy” for intelligence, but intelligence as an abstract trait) is normally distributed like most other traits, 50% of people are going to be dumber than average because in normal distributions the mean is the median. The “general population” is not smart by any definition.

And anyone trying to claim that intelligence as a concept is completely socially constructed and that there is no difference in intelligence between people, or tries to conflate IQ etc psychometric measures and intelligence, can shove it up their ass.

snooggums ,
@snooggums@midwest.social avatar

I wasn’t even commenting on IQ, just the general population’s interest in even trying to understand new things.

A lot of otherwise smart people I know just can’t get past the indoctrination of bigotry from their youth that is reinforced by conservative media.

hydroptic OP ,

Oh I know you weren’t, it was just a disclaimer because a lot of people seem to think that any references to intelligence specifically mean IQ and go into frankly incredibly tedious tirades on IQ’s faults

intelligence as an abstract trait

I read something about this two days ago, it’s called “g factor” or something. And yes, it follows a normal distribution.

Apparently, it’s very similar in animals than it is in humans.

hydroptic OP ,

The https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G_factor_(psychometrics) is actually a psychometric construct to an extent, and its distribution isn’t known but it’s generally thought that it’s probably normally distributed. Basically the g factor just summarizes how results on a bunch of different cognitive tasks tend to correlate.

Rivalarrival ,

50% of people are going to be dumber than average because in normal distributions the mean is the median. The “general population” is not smart by any definition.

What if “smart” begins at the 35th percentile, rather than the 50th? What if “gifted” is anything above the 50th percentile?

hydroptic OP , (edited )

What if “smart” begins at the 35th percentile, rather than the 50th?

I didn’t mean that the 50th is where “smart” begins, just that 50% are going to be below average in intelligence.

Is this even a joke? In Spring DI beans are nothing but glorified over complicated global variables.

Also this fits in here perfectly m.youtube.com/watch?v=k0qmkQGqpM8

indog ,

Spring singleton beans are supposed to be stateless though, so they can’t be called variables. Maybe the DI aspect of Spring is less relevant today in the micro service era, but in the day Spring helped make layered monolith apps much cleaner.

aluminium ,

Really? From my experience the opposite is the case. I work on a smallish team with 3 other developers and we also have a few spring services with < 100 classes and we constantly run into issues where making changes to a bean causes issues in another unrelated part of the codebase. I can’t imagine what a nightmare it would be with a larger codebase and more devs working on it.

You’ll call a Phillips a Phillips but not a Robertson a Robertson or an Allen an Allen, smh

John_McMurray ,

Those aren’t Robertson, they’re Square, it’s different, Robertson has a taper, square doesn’t.

Skkorm ,

In Canada, all square screws are called Robinson. If you go into a hardware store and ask for square head screws, the worker will correct you and say “the Robinsons are this way”.

It’s just regional.

John_McMurray ,

They are literally two different things, and it’s Robertson, not Robinson. Yes, saying “square” in Canada will get you Robertson, as no one uses Square up north.

And here I wish they cut them in half. A half turkey is a much better size for 4 or fewer people.

Just buy a chicken. Tastes better anyway.

I found that the meat to fat/bone ratio on Turkey was worse than Chicken. Always have so much waste when preparing Turkey the money just didn’t make it worth it.

someguy3 ,

Turkey can feed more people, cheaper, and I make so many chickens I could use a change

areyouevenreal ,

You just said a whole turkey is too much

someguy3 ,

And why I want a half turkey. C’mon this isn’t hard.

areyouevenreal ,

You specifically said you like turkey because it feeds more people, yet a whole turkey is apparently too big and you want half of one. Make up your mind man.

someguy3 ,

Wow, still going? If you really need it:

HALF Turkey can feed more people, cheaper, and I make so many chickens I could use a change.

Seriously this isn’t hard.

areyouevenreal ,

A half turkey isn’t going to feed more people than a reasonably large chicken. They aren’t that big lmao. Cheaper maybe, but turkey isn’t as nice as chicken to begin with. I get wanting a change though. Also if you raise chickens then surely that’s the cheapest option?

Honestly though if you want half a turkey just save the other half for later. Make a curry or something, idk.

someguy3 , (edited )

Yeah something told me that you coming back a week later means you wouldn’t be able to let it go when you finally realized you can’t follow the conversation. Ciao.

lol at him downvoting.

pantyhosewimp ,

I misread your sentence about “change” and I started to think of how various sizes of poultry could be used as monetary currency. Like:

It’ll cost you 2 turkeys. You got change for 3 chickens? Here’s a Cornish hen in change. Good luck with your pack of Yu-Gi-Oh cards.
