You’re already late for work.

Rushing won’t help that. Speeding won’t help that. Aggressively accelerating and slamming on brakes won’t help that.

By the time I’m late for work, it’s no more annoying than seeing it on any other morning where I’m still going to work, and still have to scrape at ice/frost.

Maybe it’s just not my personal compounding annoyance, because I certainly understand multiple minor annoyances piling on making you pissed.

Lpt: boil water at night before bed, so you can use it to melt the ice off the windshield. Just pop it in the freezer to keep it until morning.

toomanyjoints69 ,

Some jobs arent forvivving. At the coal mije i work at, being late can mean a permanent reduction in your pay. Its the only job that pays anything close to a living wage here, so you cant just quit and find a new one. You either get there on time or explain to your husband why he cant cook the nice meals he likes to and has to buy ramen.

Transporter_Room_3 ,
@Transporter_Room_3@startrek.website avatar

That’s fair, I totally understand that some employers are assholes about someone being late even if they’ve been on time for 27 years.

But when you’re already late… What can you do? Being there 2 minutes later won’t help when your employer is like that.

I prefer to measure speed in football fields per minute.

IDontHavePantsOn ,

You make dem der figures FPH n’ you got a deal. I don’t wanna be going no 600 yards a minute. I wanna be cruisin at 35000 yard and hour, ya hur?

MacNCheezus ,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

A mile is about 15 football fields, so if we did switch to using that measurement, we could all be going 1,000 on the freeway.

IDontHavePantsOn ,

Ur gotdang right. My Mopar might be a four banger, but with cheezus behind the wheel we’re gon’ near 1700 n’ gettin 500 a gallon.

MacNCheezus ,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

Hmmm yeah… I know some of those words.

JPSound ,

As an american, It’s easier when you convert football fields to watermelons and seconds to no healthcare. One you start thinking in terms of watermelons per crippling medical debt, everything clicks. You’re welcome.

MacNCheezus ,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

Is this a joke about black people not being able to afford healthcare or something?

JPSound ,

No… Not at all but what gave you that idea? Besides, everyone here enjoys medical debt or an undiagnosed ailment. Sometimes both if you’re lucky.

Beelzebob ,

Watermelon is why. But, dammit, everyone loves watermelon.

“Dongles per snongle” sounds like a British person measuring the gender ratio at their local pub

Paradoxvoid ,
@Paradoxvoid@aussie.zone avatar

Americans merely adopted the nonsensical measurements. The Brits were born to them.

MasterNerd , to memes in I prefer speeds per Swedes
@MasterNerd@lemm.ee avatar

Dude it’s such an easy conversion between dongles and whatsits, you just don’t get how intuitive it is. There are 42.48 whatsits in a dongle, and 17.49 dongles in a shlorp. Europeans are overreacting so much

MisterFrog ,
@MisterFrog@lemmy.world avatar

I feel like this is part of the the joke because Americans often focus on Europeans when metric comes up. I’m Australian, and I have been assumed to be in Europe a number of times by US internet commenters on the topic haha

And there are only 6 tracks, and also the CD was $20.

paultimate14 ,

They are typically 45-60 minutes. Which could be 1 long song, or 20+ short songs.

teamevil ,

That fucking album is proof there was hope, except it bankrupted London Records which killed Grotüs’ career. They are a dope ass band I found in a CD store with throwaway CDs for a dollar in 99. Definitely worth it for them. YouTube Grotüs’ Mass.

Uniquitous ,

Dude, I was there. I lived it. Step off.

paultimate14 ,

Bruh I’m looking over at my shelf of CD’s from the time.

But let’s look at the best selling albums that came out in 1999, the year referenced in the meme.

  1. Backstreet Boys - Millennium - 12 tracks
  2. Britney Spears - Baby One More Time - 11 tracks (or more, depending on the version)
  3. Santana - Supernatural - 13 tracks
  4. Celine Dion - All the Way… A Decade of Song - 16 tracks (kind of weird as it’s a compilation)
  5. Ricky Martin - Ricky Martin - 14 Tracks
  6. Blink-182 - Enema of the State - 12 tracks
  7. RHCP - Calofornication - 15 tracks
  8. Christina Aguilera - Christina Aguilera - 12 tracks (I think? I’m only finding re-releases that include more bonus tracks now)
  9. Creed - Human Clay - 11 tracks
  10. Dido - No Angel - 12 tracks

Maybe back in the day you mistakenly bought singles instead of albums?

abraxas ,

Mostly THAT was EPs. Some of the best albums are EPs, but they’re short.

Rose for the Dead EP, was my favorite one. 6 songs.

NIN Broken was 8 songs.

A lot of punk albums have plenty of songs, but they’re so short some of them have terrible play times. OpIvy Energy (the first bootleg I ever had) is only about 35 minutes long and the whole thing mostly fit on one side of a (small) cassette tape.

I could probably find more, but that’s just off the top of my head.

paultimate14 ,

Isn’t that kind of the point of EP’s though? They’re ~half the length and should be cheaper to compensate for that.

abraxas ,

“should be”

Of the above, I only remember Rose for The Dead… costing easily as much as an LP.

ThatFembyWho ,

Hey that was the soundtrack to high school. I downloaded half of them on dialup, via Napster/Gnutella/whatever.

#7 is one of the only ones you’ll hear to this day.

Uniquitous ,

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jar_of_Flies I rest my case you condescending asshat.

paultimate14 ,

As an EP that wouldn’t have been $20 lol.

Uniquitous ,

As if you would even know.

Modern tech makes a lot of this irrelevant. I can drive from US into Canada, spend 5 seconds going through my cars settings, and have everything displayed in km, even the km I have left in the tank. It's like when coders use constants in their program, and only have to remember the constant name while the number it represents can change in a config header or something. The program still runs as normal while silently using the new value.

It's not really worth caring about. Not in everyday life. I'd say differently if you were a scientist or engineer. Metric should be the measurement system of all STEM.

Anticorp ,

You could do that in old cars too, without even changing anything. A lot of them had a separate ring inside the speedometer showing KPH. But that doesn’t mean the person understands the distance when told that their destination is 47 kilometers away and they’re accustomed to miles.
