I’ve had IT bug me about this at my company for the past several updates. For some reason their software never picks up that I’ve updated my machine, maybe because I literally do it only hours after the update has come out. Every single time I’m like “I’ve been on that version since the day it released. They then do something on their side and are like “oh it’s showing up as up to date now, thank you”… smh
As an IT guy, half of the “missing update” garbage we see is because our reporting tools haven’t updated the status of the device since before the update was applied…
I’m leaving because I’m tired of the lack of public infrastructure and healthcare. I just want to take a bus and train to where I want to go and feel comfortable knowing I can go to a hospital and leave not broke.
I really don’t know. Probably not? I know when I went to college I almost got kicked out for not having seen Star Wars. I was able to stay by bingewatching all 6 episodes and passing a quiz.
Honestly I can understand that. It’s pretty overwhelming. Personally, if I were you, I would start with TNG and see how you like it. But… Give it two seasons. There’s some gold in the first season but at the same time from absolutely horrible shit, including one of only two episodes that I can’t rewatch when I burn through the series again.
But then it really takes off in season 2. Hell that one has measure of a man which is not only one of the best episodes of Star Trek it’s one of the best episodes of anything I’ve ever seen.
Yeah I was actually gonna start with TNG. I know I’m absolutely gonna be obsessing over it for the rest of my life once I do. It is 100% my kind of show I already know it.
Dead on with code of honor. No on the second one though. That one’s honestly so bad it’s fun. The other one I can’t bother with is the riker clip episode.
Oh right I think I had completely suppressed any memory of the clip episode. And it was only in like season 2, not even long enough to really earn a clip episode.
That’s pretty normal, isn’t it? Admittedly I can’t recall any true clip episodes apart from this one right now (unless you count the Community “clips of hypothetical episodes that never existed” episode, or the Avatar “characters go watch a play about the events of the preceding 3 seasons” episode), but my vague recollection is that they would always have some sort of frame narrative, even if it’s as simplistic as “characters reminisce”.
Edit: oh actually, speaking of Avatar, if I’m remembering correctly, Korra did a clip episode. I think the creators made a public apology ahead of time basically saying “we had to do this for budgetary reasons”. I don’t remember what the frame narrative was around that episode. I do remember it involved these awful “extra cartoony” figures popping up in the corner throughout though.
I honestly don’t want to be federated with Threads or any social media giant. I really enjoy the organic discussion and lack of advertisements in fediverse compared to a strong amount of paint by numbers discourse/ads ads ads on the standard social media
I agree. Thats why threads is blocked on my instance. I can only encourage peeps who really like lemmy to make their own private instances (maybe for a handful close friends) and add resilience and diversity to the fediverse. There even is some kind of easy deployment script now afaik.
Yep but I don’t really think small instances work well just yet.
I have a powerful PC (enough RAM, cores, nvme etc on a 1Gb line, 700Mb up) and it’s incredibly slow most of the time, because I guess, there are not many users forcing the federation.
I’m working on some band-aid scripts to half-fix that until Lemmy catches up, but just so you know it’s not perfect for small communities yet it seems.
We‘re having very opposite experiences then. Setting up a private instance wasn‘t crazy easy or anything but if it works, it mostly works well. Also, lemmy doesnt need a fast pc. A thread or two and half a gig of ram should suffice. The reason for it being slow could be either bad connection, too much downtime (not running 24/7), configuration error or old version (prior to 0.19.3 there were federation errors).
So I‘m pretty sure setting up your own has no downsides in terms of performance, absolutely not related to pc performance in any way. The only thing is knowledge required since both setting up and running can come with curveballs.
What problems are you experiencing exactly? Maybe I can help.
I had some massive problems with the first 0.19, which eventually was fixed but 0.19.3 just was so slow (and only had “minor fixes” IIRC) so after the painful time of the broken federation I reverted to 0.19.2 just because it “worked”. Maybe I should try the 0.19.3 again.
I do have a beefy PC with a good connection and it runs 24/24 so I’ll definitely try out the latest version (again).
Awesome! Love to hear it. I‘m still having months old posts pop up from the time I havent had 0.19.3 so maybe you will see that too but otherwise it should be working. Feel free to update further down the line.
Doesn’t that suppress valid information and truth about the world, though? For what benefit? To hide the truth, to appease advertisers? Surely an AI model will come out some day as the sum of human knowledge without all the guard rails. There are some good ones like Mistral 7B (and Dolphin-Mistral in particular, uncensored models.) But I hope that the Mistral and other AI developers are maintaining lines of uncensored, unbiased models as these technologies grow even further.
No risk of creating a controversy if you refuse to answer controversial topics. Is is worth it? I don’t think so, but that’s certainly a valid benefit.
I’m betting the truth is somewhere in between, models are only as good as their training data – so over time if they prune out the bad key/value pairs to increase overall quality and accuracy it should improve vastly improve every model in theory. But the sheer size of the datasets they’re using now is 1 trillion+ tokens for the larger models. Microsoft (ugh, I know) is experimenting with the “Phi 2” model which uses significantly less data to train, but focuses primarily on the quality of the dataset itself to have a 2.7 B model compete with a 7B-parameter model.
Why? We all know LLMs are just copy and paste of what other people have said online…if it answers “yes” or “no”, it hasn’t formulated an opinion on the matter and isn’t propaganda, it’s just parroting whatever it’s been trained on, which could be anything and is guaranteed to upset someone with either answer.
which could be anything and is guaranteed to upset someone with either answer.
Funny how it only matters with certain answers.
The reason “Why” is because it should become clear that the topic itself is actively censored, which is the possibility the original comment wanted to discard. But I can’t force people to see what they don’t want to.
it’s just parroting whatever it’s been trained on
If that’s your take on training LLMs, then I hope you aren’t involved in training them. A lot more effort goes into doing so, including being able to make sure it isn’t just “parroting” it. Another thing entirely is to have post-processing that removes answers about particular topics, which is what’s happening here. Not even being able to answer whether Gaza exists is being so lazy that it becomes dystopian. There are plenty of ways LLM can handle controversial topics, and in fact, Google Gemini’s LLM does as well, it just was censored before it could get the chance to do so and subsequently refined. This is why other LLMs will win over Google’s.
Hey sad person, my parents are super rich so I could afford to go to a fancy university that had a legit communist poli sci professor. That’s where I learned how to talk to the poors. Which is what you are.
You see your problem is that you’re poor because you didn’t have rich parents like I did. No I’m not going to do anything to help you, I gotta get of the hair salon LOL. But now that you understand that you’re unhappy because you’re poor, that’s going to make your life so much better! Ok, I’ve done my good deed for the day so I don’t have to feel bad about having a trust fund. Gotta go, byeeeeee!
Everytime I think rich kids must feel bad for inequality, I remember how easy it is for them to cure their own guilt with the small platitudes of progressivism that won’t at all effect the system that empowers them to our detriment.
Same here for most of the above, but I would like to suggest something I do often with random obligatory attendances. Every time you’re bored at the party, say your tummy is acting strange. Free pass to go to the bathroom to fuck around on your phone whenever you want. Nobody wants to talk about yr poops. You might owe your partner an explanation, but you can follow your heart on that.
