I’d argue that, for Lemmy, it depends on which communities you subscribe to. Even if you subscribed to one community that now has stuff you don’t like, there’s a decent chance that another community on another instance has what you’re looking for.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

“Lemmy” is not a platform, it is software you can use to make a platform (unless you’re on .ml I guess).

criticalthreshold ,

I’m out of the loop but I’ve seen this stated many times now re: .ml. What’s the deal with it? I thought it was mostly dev focused with memes and left-leaning stuff?

Corgana ,

It’s the instance owned and operated by the main Lemmy devs. Most instances are run by totally unaffiliated people using Lemmy software. .ml is the only one where you could say the software devs are also the community Admins and moderators.

vivadanang ,

would add baking soda but yeah, it gets the funk out.

eclectic_electron ,

The baking soda will just neutralize the vinegar though? And you’ll get salt water? Vinegar is good at getting smells out though.

PullUpCircuit ,

I personally use the vinegar instead, but one or another will do the trick.

But like you said, both at once make salt water, which is less effective at killing germs and removing funk.

vivadanang ,

it reacts. I can’t explain the precise chemistry behind the reaction, but it breaks organic deposits / stains / crud and actually gets funky smells out of the wash. works better than any off the shelf product I’ve tried.

vivadanang ,

not sure on the precise chemistry involved in the reaction, but it works like a charm for getting stains and smells out of laundry, and takes smells out of counters etc. w/o using harsh chemicals. you should give it a try.

superduperenigma , to memes in dining with moomin daddy

I feel like that just draws an unnecessary amount of attention to the fact that you’re dining alone. Nothing wrong with dining alone, but I’d feel awkward if the staff were trying to “cover up” the fact that I’m alone.

atx_aquarian ,
@atx_aquarian@lemmy.world avatar

There’s one restaurant in my area that has some tables for one. I noticed that, for me, those do feel more complete when I’m dining alone. Instead of extra, conspicuously empty seats around the rest of the table, there’s a table clearly designed for one diner to just enjoy a good meal.

And it’s not enough to have tables with only one chair. If such a table is amidst larger-party tables, I think it still makes the other usual places at the table feel abnormally empty. What makes tables for one feel “right” has something to do with their placement in the restaurant (so as not to feel odd or exceptional), their orientation (so as not to face the diner towards someone else’s gaze–unless mingling is the goal), and then the size and number of seats.

It’s probably difficult for some restaurants to accommodate solo diners due to a need for density, but when a restaurant might have some space that would otherwise not be all that useful (like a little extra space between a planter divider and a walkway, where larger tables just wouldn’t fit), it is an opportunity to attract solo diners who want to enjoy the solo experience of focusing on the meal and their own thoughts rather than bar seating. (And, on that topic, I think it’s becoming more normal for people to not want alcohol displayed prominently in front of them when they’re really just looking for a nice meal.)

Andrew15_5 ,
@Andrew15_5@mander.xyz avatar

They are not covering up, they are trying to make you comfortable. If you don’t wanna, just ask.

kewwwi OP ,

I don’t think the headline here is true, but even so they aren’t “covering up” anything, they’re giving you a plushie so you’d feel less alone, or more comfortable, eating alone at their restaurant. Surely you could decline, but why eat at a moomin restaurant if you’re gonna decline the plushie?

Alborlin ,

It’s sometimes unbearable on Lemmy. I have stated that using Linux is very hard for noobs and it’s not useful still for general audience. I have got so many downvotes just because of this, you won’t believe. It feels like community is Linux users , who are acting as nerds or are nerds, and they are somewhat inclusive of outsiders. Lemmy feels like a club for only the so called intellectuals and they want to barr regular person getting in. This is also evident with Lemmy worlds or alternative of subbreddits. If you try to find some they still don’t exists. Further Lemmy is very hard to understand , even I struggle to understand how it works. But the access to different Lemmy’s is good, via boost app. The Lemmy worlds though they don’t look as polished as Reddit does but that’s cause Lemmy is evolving. So in summary Quality of posts, strong sense of non inclusivity by lemmye’rs , understanding of how Lemmy works and old feel of Lemmy are the reasons is keeping people out.

Peppycito ,

I feel you. I don’t give one single fuck about Linux. My lemmy experience got better when I filtered out Linux across the board. The “hive mind” here is way more super-geek than reddit ever was. I’m a craftsman, just about the only reason I turn my computer Chromebook on is to send invoices. And that makes a lot of lemmy mad it seems. I feel way more like this guy here than I ever did on reddit.

Plibbert , to memes in what's your best "insecure boss" story?

Got a new boss once my company merged. First round table meeting and he starts attacking our imaging team for not working fast enough, claiming all received requests should and could be boxed and shipped within 48 hours of being received.

After the imaging team kinda fumbled their words, I stepped in and just flat out said that is not true, not of what he said was true. Then explained why. Having to break it down for him that these are office tech workers that support one of the largest teams with the highest turnovers. They don’t have the luxury of sitting down and doing nothing but one thing consistently.

The guys hasn’t spoken to me in almost 2 years sense. Other than “hey I’m sick, hey I’m going on PTO, e.t.c.” he passively snaps at me if I speak up in team meetings now. It’s fuckin hilarious.

Because it was used to launder money. And, bankrupting a business is actually a way to avoid taxes, especially when you regularly lie on your tax filings.

    You can cross your eyes to spot the differences or similarities of two almost identical pictures if they are beside eachother. e.g. sometimes there are “spot the 10 differences” pictures next to each other on the back of cornflakes boxes. I loved solving those because it’s easy if you cross your eyes just like when you try to see a “magic eye” picture.

    I think it’s kind of like those 3D pictures where if you let your eyes unfocus and then slowly refocus, both images line up. I did it and it’s really weird since the colors are so different, but it looks like two images of hotdogs, one on top of the other.

    Tvkan ,

    I know you’re making a joke, but this really is a (ihmo very interesting) mess:

    In this case this is just multiple single points of failure though, at least for the larger ones.

    If you lose one of the big red ones in the middle (common carotid arteries) you’ll have a major stroke killing essentially three quarters of one of your hemispheres.

    There’s another pair in the spine (vertebral arteries, not visible) which supply the posterior and lower parts of your brain, but they’re also not redundant. Also sometimes, one’s doing basically all of the heavy lifting, and sometimes the other one doesn’t exist at all.

    Also this is a simplification and many many variations exist.
