All the landlords I know have more than 1 job. My boss is the landlord of 7 rental properties. He also owns a local breakfast diner and his ass is there every Sunday on that grill flipping eggs and bacon with his employees. He also owns a private security business. If one of the guards calls out sick. Its him that covers their shift. And he pays himself for those hours at the same wage he pays the employee hes covering.
My uncle. Owns 2 rental properties. He also runs an electronics recycling business where he loads and hauls E-Waste and he does that and all the manual labor of it by himself.
My old landlord. Young guy about 30. Boughtkmy building from the previous slumlord owner during the pandemic. Dropped 25k putting brand new stairs and decks on the building for safety. During a time where the average going rate on the market for a 1 bedroom apartment was 1100$ he chose to leave all of our rents at 700$ a month because he didn’t feel right about screwing people.
I am not a landlord. I have no desire to be a landlord. But not every landlord is a lazy sack of shit.
Agree. My mother owns a lot of land in the suburbs of my city. She sold a large amount of land in order to fully pay for my entire undergrad. She could leave her day job right now, but she really likes what she does and thinks of landlording as a side job for her in order for me and my sister to have a comfortable life.
They are also working. They are performing skilled, useful labor that actively benefits other people. A landlord is not. Working a side job unrelated to landlording does not suddenly make landlording a job that deserves pay.
there were kind and hard working slave owners too. the institution itself is bad.
realestate is simply the best and safest investment you can make in most of the civilized world today, in the same way that owning land and buying slaves to work it was the best investment 300 years ago.
At the end of the day its just waste. If money spent on housing isnt going towards making more and better housing you end up with a choke in supply that raises the price of housing, which hurts the efficiency of society as a whole .
Maybe if renting is only allowed for the party that built the house, it has to be rent to own, and is only allowed for say, 50 years after its construction. Have building codes to ensure it’ll be solid for a long time. With that investing in realestate could be both profitable and societally beneficial.
A lot of people like to think the world is either black or white with no in-between. As someone who works in construction and renovates houses a lot I can confirm that there are definitely good land lords as well as bad ones. My gf rented an appartment from old people before I met her and she paid almost nothing (400 euros all-inn), you can’t even get social housing for that here. And the state of maintenance was excellent. Also in the more rural areas here the private rent sector seems to be run by mostly decen people.
Then sometimes we have to renovate ex-student housing and a lot of times those buildings are absolute dumps (to the point where you can barely call them habitable) with insane prices. Especially in the large cities I see some really bad practise. Thankfully a lot of those malicious kind of landlords are put on trial (hence why we start renovating after they sold the property).
Disclaimer: I don’t live in the US and tenants have a lot of rights here to the point where landlords are forced to provide a certain standard of living. Unfortunately (foreign) students seem to not know this, this is the reason you mostly see malpractice with students here.
Your boss works one regular day a week and covers the occasional shift for a sick employee, but the rest of his income comes from the labor of his tenants and employees. I’m sure he’s a nice guy. I’ve had nice bosses and landlords. But there’s a pretty unequal exchange of labor here. With surgeons and most other high-paid workers, the high wage pays for student loans and years of unpaid student labor.
Think they’re way overhated, yes some of the users can troll a bit too much but they’re generally fine and I appreciate that they help stomp out fascist, racist, and anti-trans rhetoric on Lemmy.
I don’t support messages like that but I’ve seen similar messages from racists and fascists from other instances too, does that mean every instance where a small portion of the users DM fucked up shit should be defederated?
Not great, but nowhere near the same level of problem in the west where most of us are commenting from right now, so your whataboutism is irrelevant. Wanna try again?
It’s not. The Chinese government is an abusive autocracy that doesn’t respect the “rights” of its people and answers to nothing and no one other than Xi and profits and power. Those three things are king.
Marxists and fascists are two sides of the same coin. They may have somewhat different end goals, but they’re alike in having zero regard for the democratic will of the people. May every Hexbear troll be accursed.
Authoritarian, yes, fascist, no. We need the term fascist at the moment to call out actual fascists, diluting it by using it label people who aren't fascists but are also problematic plays directly into the misinformation the fascists thrive on
Exactly, I’m getting sick to death of the overuse of the terms fascism and nazism because they’re being used to describe everyone with a totalitarian bent. Yes, the GOP have fascistic tendencies, so it’s apt, but the real operative word to use in pretty much all of these cases is authoritarianism. And whether they’re [actual] fascists or communists, authoritarians are reprehensible. The Nazis were irredeemable but—and I say this as a socialist—so were the Soviets.
I honestly have no idea what they stand for. Their posts are so confusing and non coherent. I’m sure a lot of it is because sarcasm doesn’t work with text unless you have context. But without context, all it comes across as is a bunch of trolls who just love to hate
They’re a left wing group that uses a lot of sarcasm and trolling. It can be a bit off putting to most but a lot of it comes from the fact that most people don’t bother reading or looking beyond US propaganda so it can be frustrating talking to people like that. Personally I try to come at things a bit more openly but I can understand the frustration of dealing with people that don’t put in much effort to understand the nuances of geopolitical topics.
They are a tossup of ccp communists, hard left leninists and general anti westerners. They constantly bully people to remind them that they are smarter than you and they are eager to showcase this. They post screenshots of comments they want to target on their main page and links so they can brigade. If you even bother interacting, they will spam you with the intent of getting you to peer into their carefully chosen pieces of information to steer you toward communism. They are a nuisance and i have learned that if you can easily bait them into saying awful things.
Their whole stance is bizarre. It would be like if I believed every country should be democratic, but if any non-democratic foreigner asked me about it I said, “well I’m not going to even talk to you until you’ve read every bit of democratic theory, and even if you do, I’m not going to admit or discuss any criticism of democracy. Also, you are evil for just being born in your evil country.” They can’t possibly expect to convert anyone that way.
They openly brigade submissions and comments on other instances and harass anyone they don’t agree with. It’s not just some of the users it’s almost entirely the point of the community existing. Their comments are almost entirely sarcastic, and add nothing to conversation or even debate.
Feel free to show us one single instance where they “stamped out fascist, racist, [or] anti-trans rhetoric” because I don’t believe you.
https://lemmy.one/post/2831169Think I linked this right (haven’t tried since I switched to voyager). I can have more later this week if you want but it’s Labor Day weekend here and im drinking with family and you said literally one instance.
That’s a dead link bro edit :actually, what’s weird is the hyperlink is broken but the link itself seems to be working when you copy the text of your link.
Right, because they NEVER used pig shit balls that’s not a custom emoji picture on their insurance or anything, and they don’t have a “libsgetdunkedon” or equivalent community, where they say shit like that constantly. Riiiight.
But of course you have to deny reality to be on the mental level of a lemmygrad poster
I believe trans refers to gender assigned at birth, so unless someone detransitions or time travels to change their birth gender I don’t think fully transitioning can make you not trans.
Trans people continuing to call themselves trans after transitioning is an entirely different topic.
My point is that I accept trans people.
Someone wanting to call themselves trans after transitioning, in no way, justifies calling me a bigot. That is the most braindead way to try and influence change in the world.
Hexadytes are cancer. They’re cancer here, they were cancer on /r/chapostraphouse.
You mean like Queen Elizabeth I who ruled over England from 1558-1603?
You're right of course but I just couldn't help being a smartass when the arguably most powerful person in the world at the beginning of the century was a woman.
You wouldn’t be able to pay me to be seen with Tate
I don’t like Musk much at all but I’d prob pay $100 to eat dinner with him and try to figure out wtf the rationale for some of his moves has been.
The psychopaths who think they can get Musk/JayZ/etc to be their sugar daddy and find their wildest dreams or suddenly teach them how to be rich fucks…yeah they kind of scare me
I’m not sure if this works anymore but I saved this message a while back. If you get this pop-up then put this into your adblock custom rules and it should sort it out:
I believe it should work with any adblocker that lets you set custom rules but since adblocking still works for me I haven’t tried this myself. Saved it from reddit like 3 months ago so I hope it’s still relevant
No one cares of it’s obvious how it immediately affects them. The problem with uploading sensitive data to the Internet is more subtle, because it usually doesn’t affect you right away. But once you’ve uploaded it, it will be there for many years waiting to be breached…
No lie, he seems like such a cool dude. If I were in the area, I’d totally go to see him. And while I first knew him as Chekov, I grew to love him as Al Bester on Babylon 5, truly some of his best work!
As Chekhov it was like yeah okay I get what they were going for. But as Bester he really stole every episode of B5 he was in. Bravo, Walter. I wish more folks gave B5 a chance. Looking at you, sis 👀
I interviewed once for a part-time job at a potential startup, and the two people running it spent 75% of the time talking about how they had a pingpong table and how that meant it was a fun company…
The job wouldn’t be in the office tho, so for my position (and pretty much every employee) would only be able to use it off the clock.
They were very excited about the ping pong table tho, because their job was in office and they played a lot.
I’ve worked in at a smaller startup with a ping pong table and my anecdote is we were all obsessed with ping pong. So their excitement could really be genuine. It’s not always a ruse.
It seems odd putting meat in the same category as bread.
In terms of pure health, there’s not much out there better than most meats. Yes, beef is a bit lower than pork and chicken, but properly portioned (looking at most of us Americans) it has very few downsides.
Bread on the other hand can be one of the worst foods we can eat. Of course, it is still all about moderation.
EDIT: Why the reddit-like downvotes folks? There’s really no cohesive argument that puts meat below bread healthwise in most situations. If you want to avoid meat, avoid meat. If you want to be morally opposed to anyone eating meat, so be it. Facts are still facts and misinformation isn’t the right way to fight that battle.
The doctor in your link says processed meat is likely bad all around, presumably due to additives, but that red meat in lower amounts (specifically, he says “2-3 times a week” and to use red meat as a side, instead of a main) is actually associated with lower health risks.
Your “source” is one doctor speaking out against and entire study where the researchers found “low” evidence that either red meat or processed meat is harmful. That’s not low health risks, or low percentage of affected individuals, but low evidence that here are any risks at all.
But yeah nobody is going to put a wholegrain bun on their hamburger.
Uhh. Why not? Whole Grain comes in all shapes and sizes now. Hell, most higher end restaurants use whole grain buns. Not sure why you would conclude that?
Do you live somewhere in the world where it’s hard to get? I rarely eat bread, but when I do buy from the store it’s always 100% wholegrain. I just bought some a few weeks ago and there were plenty of different choices on the shelf.
I said it elsewhere. Basically, it combines low nutritional value with a high density pack of too-easily-digested carbs.
The effect is that it increases blood sugar and hunger, which very easily leads to higher weight. Higher weight alone is not immediately unhealthy, but it can get unhealthy pretty fast if you get heavier and heavier.
And the only objection is “well, better than sugar, so it’s not THAT bad”… But we have a lot of added sugar in bread here in the US.
