I dunno mang, this title is self-referential… OP is indeed spilling the beans on this meme. It’s 4D memery - Like poetry, but with stupidity instead of rhyming.
I just want things to end. It's okay for things to be over. Star wars wasn't served by it's sequels, but here we are with a new WHATEVER every year. And marvel is worse, with a new show every month or two. Realistically, how long is anyone supposed to care?
I think I saw some doctor on YouTube explaining that most blind people don’t see pure black. They have varying levels of sight that count as being legally blind due to cataracts or something else.
Don’t get me wrong, the relief they feel for that 30 seconds for their disabilities to come back still fits in with the spirit of this meme.
Knowing what you’re missing, and being able to do nothing about it, really sucks, especially full blindness, not just legally blind.
Don’t get me wrong, legally blind (just seeing shapes and stuff) still sucks, it’s just hard to compare to full blindness.
I say this as my brother’s medical situation is slowly causing his retina to detach which will lead to full blindness. He’s a graphic designer by education. It’s cruel. He’s not quite legally blind yet, he can still drive in good conditions, but it’s degenerative and getting worse, and will not get better, only worse. The only treatment is to slow the deterioration, nothing will prevent or reverse it.
Myself and my SO are helping him and his wife deal with it. We moved into a shared home and we’re all here for whatever he needs.
We moved in well in advance of him losing full vision so he can learn the layout of the house visually and get to the point of being able to navigate the house with his eyes closed.
We put in Google home devices all over so we can use announcements/paging to call out if he needs help. More people in the house means more people home more often, so there’s a better chance someone is nearby to help when help is needed.
It wasn’t cheap to buy a house when we did, but we’re doing ok. We have a plan.
I don’t know the breakdown of the statistics, but yeah there are different kinds and levels of blindness. Blindness can be due to physical damage to the lense, retina, optic nerve, or the visual processing area of the brain. It can be due to clouded lenses like cataracts. It can be due to malformations of the retina, non-functioning cones/rods, or shape of the lens or eyeball itself. Some of those lead to total blindness, but lead to varying degrees of vision impairment, up to and including legal blindness. Some of those can be corrected for with glasses, contacts, surgery or even electronic neural interfaces in some cases. Some are just permanent and can’t be improved.
The kind of blindness I find most interesting is when the eyes and optic nerve function normally, but the party of the brain that processes vision just doesn’t function for various reason, but the part of the brain that processes spatial awareness does still function. Those people have no sight at all, but they are still able to perceive objects and space around them and, for example, avoid obstacles when walking, despite but being able to see the obstacles in a visual sense.
At least with open street map, you can login to openstreetmap.org/edit and mark the bad road as private/gated or even delete it entirely. I did it on a bad road segment in my neighborhood and ride-sharing drivers no longer made wrong turns there (Grab apparently uses OSM instead of Google Maps data).
Crowdsourcing is nice but I’m not happy about the “don’t mark temporary hindrances” thing in OSM, some of them last for months and I can’t warn others. Sometimes I even forget the hindrance myself and feel real unsmart dumb.
Oh right, it could easily be abused by traffic trolls. Didn’t cross my mind, sometimes my faith in other people are unreasonably high.
Perhaps some sort of validation system, if two users report the same temporary hindrance? TBH I can’t be bothered to work out a fool-proof system for a hypothetical solution I doubt will ever be implemented hah.
We had this same problem and did just this. 3 years later still no changes. Until my dad happened to be complaining about it at a party and was introduced to a friend of a friend that worked at Google with the maps team. Was finally fixed a week later. So yea a path exists but 3 years is a long time to wait for a simple fix.
I swear they use the Maps Contributor ratings to determine how quickly they make changes.
I’ve not had any issues getting changes made in a timely manner when I suggest them because I’ve left a bunch of reviews and photos for places I’ve visited.
If you never leave reviews or photos, they probably don’t trust your suggestions. That’s just my guess though.
A few months ago I reported a missing section of road where I’m from and they corrected it in like a couple of weeks. Maybe it depends on how many people reports the same thing? IDK
I may not longer live in Vermont but man I’ve been wanting to get Google maps updated on all the roads that no longer exists also now I live in Florida I’m finding none of the bike lanes are recognized
The second they started taking phone trade ins was the death of the classic GameStop. I remember even late 2000s picking up used GameCube games for a STEAL.
I went in to a GameStop to buy a new switch charger because my kids lost it on vacation. They told me you have to buy the right kind of charger, I was very confused because I thought Nintendo only sells one kind of charger for the switch. I told the guy I’m using it with a docking station and he pulled out some shitty GameStop branded charger and I said no thanks. The guy proceeded to tell me I would have to buy the charger directly from Nintendo…I went down the road to target and bought one off the shelf after like 5 minutes of looking. Fucking shameless GameStop…
Just to make sure I wasn’t going insane, I looked at Nintendo’s website, and sure enough they only sell one kind of charger for the Nintendo switch. There’s some weird smaller charger they sell for accessories like the pokeball thing for let’s go Pikachu but they very clearly spell that out when you purchase the charger.
Not related to your point at all, but: The switch uses USB-C. Pretty much any USB-C charger will work. For the dock you do want to make sure it can push enough power, but it’s a rather low requirement. I use the same charger for my SteamDeck dock and the Switch dock. It’s the great thing about USB-C. But of course gamestop would try to sell you their generic crap instead of an official one.
You don’t want to be using any random USB-C charger for your switch. The Nintendo switch doesn’t adhere to USB-C power delivery standards and using a different charger can cause problems. That’s why all of those third party docks were burning up switches when the switch first came out.
The docks were standard USB-C docks, but since the switch doesn’t follow proper USB-C standards because Nintendo, the docks were providing too much current and burning up switches. I will never use a third party charger for my switches, although if I did use one, the steam deck charger would be my first choice.
I’m sure the chance of anything happening is so low that it’s probably insignificant, but I’d rather not take the chance, down votes be damned.
Can’t say I’ve done extensive research, and Nintendo would be the first company I would assume would ignore standards, but my understanding is that any half decent charger has a sort of power negotiation to prevent such issue. I suppose if you have some cheap dollar store USB-C chargers laying around it might be risky if they too ignore the standards.
That said, I did have a USB-C PD 65w charger fry a laptop. It was, for sure, the charger screwing up though, I even had warning signs I completely ignored. I miss that laptop, it was a good laptop.
Yeah I jumped ship to piped too because of this. I also discovered it allows me to circumvent region locks without even firing up my VPN which is a nice bonus
Idk I just went to a channel that I know for a fact only allows you to purchase the videos if you’re watching from France, but I was able to watch all the videos for free because they are not restricted outside of France. I think it’s supposed to work automatically if your piped instance has access to instances that are hosted in countries where the videos are unrestricted
So in your case it should work if you go through an instance that is hosted in the UK
I’ve been worried about the same. I’m slowly moving my email and all accounts over my own domain name which for now is forwarded onto the same Gmail. Seems like an extra hop but if they block me then all I have to do is point my email somewhere else
I’m trying out Purely Mail. Unlimited email addresses across unlimited custom domains.
I have a cool setup where I have setup an email account at [email protected], but it’s setup as a catchall for *@service.mydomain.tld (and allows gmail-style tagging). This means I can fill out service forms by inventing addresses on the fly like [email protected] and the email shows up in one unified inbox, the subject line will include [LemonadeStand], and the message will have the flag ‘Signup’.
Use container tabs or profiles in your favorite browser
Use dedicated apps like FreeTube, GrayJay, NewPipe, Invidious, LibreTube, etc. that don’t even ask for a login.
So is there an easy way to migrate all your stuff to some other email service and what are some good ones?
So you can set up a free Proton Mail account and then connect it to your Google account and it will begin archiving all of your emails, past and future. It also has a way better web client than Gmail (not saying much).
Really wish there was an iOS app similar to the open source apps listed above. Currently Safari browser and 1Blocker are still working for me on my devices.
I know this is because Google indexes your mail but search is far superior on Gmail to Proton. I’ve downloaded the indexes from Proton on my home PC but search is still not good for searching email content.
Proton indexes your mail also now and I’ve had the exact opposite experience. Gmail and G Workspace in general is a fucking shitshow to find absolutely anything.
Not an “easy” way, but what I’ve been doing is simply whenever I handle an email in the account I want to switch from, I use that particular situation to change the email in the settings of the account of whatever I’m handling in that moment.
That way it doesn’t become an overwhelming task, and if you are consistent with it and do it each time you handle an email, slowly but surely you will have switched completely.
Proton is probably the slickest, most feature-rich and solid email service. They have a suite… Mail, VPN, Calendar, etc. I pay like $50 yearly for it, which gives a lot of extra settings. But even in the free account there is a “convert from Gmail” option that downloads all of your Gmail emails into your proton account. It’s the easiest way to degoogle. Plus, all proton-to-proton email is automatically PGP encrypted, even if you use custom domains. You can easily setup auto PGP for other external services that offer it too, so emails are seamlessly encrypted between them.
This short guide gets you up and running with Proton Mail if you are transferring your files from Gmail. You can seamlessly move the emails, attachments, calendars, and contacts you have stored in your Gmail account to Proton Mail and Proton Calendar
Use a dedicated account for YouTube. How will they remove your emails if they’re on a separate account?
I use a YouTube channel account, which might be good enough. I’ve had one in the past banned and the rest of my Google account was left alone.
(I was only just getting into creating programs that communicate with online services and I hammered their API. My program didn’t have any checks and balances to ensure it wouldn’t go over it or to throttle back when the API endpoint attempts tell it to calm down. It only happened once but that was good enough to get it banned)
There is a vast difference to other games. The core is fine, mechanics work perfectly, the game looks great, it has just bad performance. That can be fixed.
More complex but you have less control over what is produced, it’s more about getting workers to their jobs and transporting goods efficiently than making efficient production lines.
Yeah… but some people wish for more finished games and that includes performance.
Like I get it it’s playable… and some games release in much worse state but unless it’s an indie game with zero money that needs that early money to continue they should wait.
A company like Paradox should certainly be able afford testers who run the game on a variety of configurations to see if optimization is necessary.
One thing I would say and this is a broad statement - generally you don’t do optimization unless you know you need it. And you only do it after the thing you’re writing is working correctly non-optimally. Optimize too soon, or when you don’t need to just makes code an unmaintainable mess. That doesn’t doesn’t preclude writing efficient code in the first place but efficient is not the same thing as optimal.
I am absolutely with you there. I do not like the fact that the performance is pretty bad. But a game that „just“ has performance issues is potentially fixable. Games where the core gameplay loop is broken are usually not getting better over time.
And I will play City Skylines for years to come so buying it right now and playing with lower settings and less then stellar performance is fine and I will hopefully be able to increase these things over time.
Either way, around here I almost always see both end up doing stupid shit on the road. I don’t give a fuck what you’re driving. Obey the rules of the road, follow the flow of traffic, be aware of your surroundings, and for fucks sake, signal properly and clearly! Nobody’s in a race. We can all get where we’re going safely and timely if y’all just stop acting like you’re escaping a war zone!
couldn't agree with you more... can't tell you how many times I've nearly been hit by another car all because they cut in front of me suddenly, not signaling, naturally, and just sped off like they're in a race. I will see ppl going nearly 100mph in the interstate, just weaving back and forth between lanes. will never understand why ppl have to be in such a damn rush all the time. what's the point of getting somewhere 2 minutes sooner if you hurt or possibly kill someone along the way? worst part of it is that the cops here never seem to be around to keep assholes like that in check.
Oh it’s constant here, and they all act like you’re the problem. So many fatal accidents every year, pedestrians killed, at least one fatality due to people racing. Constant hit and runs. It’s like driving in GTA.
I just took a client to the mall a couple hours ago. On our way, we watched someone honk at the person next to me/in front of them at an intersection, they then tailgated them until the other person changed lanes, threw their drink, and screamed out the window. The driver’s crime, as far as I can tell, was because they didn’t move in the millisecond between when the light turned green and the psycho behind them lost their mind.
We’re in the off season now, too. Don’t even get me started when the tourists come!
plenty of hit and runs where I'm at also, especially for pedestrians. the amount of accidents even in just a week is scary. exactly! it's almost like driving the speed limit is the crime now. there's ppl who will pass on a non passing road just to get ahead of me bc I'm apparently driving too slowly. just the other day I got honked at bc the left turn light had just turned green, but the person in front of me hadn't even started turning yet. no one has a speck of patience on the road. I just want to know why lmao
ffs, seriously? that's such an extreme response. and it's truly so mind blowing to me that there's ppl who view pedestrian life as secondary to getting where they need to be. I've seen drivers swerve past pedestrians as they're crossing and honk at them and everything. it's wild out here.
I’ve been using Spotify for almost 2-3 years. The only thing I can say is the app gets DEGRADED EVERY YEAR!!! They do their best to bring more and more bugs with each update. I’m done with Spotify shit, also they removed a lot of regional songs from my country. The only reason I pay for Spotify is because I can download/rip their music and store it on my Plex Server.
Literally the opposite. Pirating takes time, effort, resources, and I lose access to “everything” - I only get what I take the time to download and store.
If a product I pay for provides a great service, I’ll keep using it. It’s worth the money for excellent user experience and convenience. It’s when they keep upping the price while reducing the features or content that bothers me, and that’s when I’d rather spend the time pirating than paying them for a worse product.
I do. Still need to configure those too. Don’t get me wrong it’s not that bad, but there was a world 5 or so years ago where the streaming platforms were just easier for the cost. Not anymore.
Why do they even have an Amazon echo if they know it’s a fucking security risk? If you need a speaker, just get a speaker, not one a spyker (sorry, that was shite)
It seems to block full names of some people. So I think it’s the Hercule Poirot it doesn’t like.
ETA - Got this response from Bing when I asked without the first name: “I’m sorry, but I’m not able to create images of fictional characters. However, you can find many fan-made artworks of Godzilla and Poirot on websites like DeviantArt 12 or other similar platforms. You can also try searching for them on search engines like Bing. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!”
ETA - “Godzilla being revealed as guilty by a french detective with an egg-shaped head, waxed mustache, and meticulous dress sense in a 1920s style.” gave me this:
Re your edit- I’ve done tons of Godzilla ones. That was the latest. I’m on a forum where we have a thread involving using AI image creators to put Godzilla in ridiculous situations.
I’ve gotten it to generate Robert Smith from The Cure, but not photo-realistically or intentionally (though Robert was in the prompt he wasn’t the focus)
ETA - “Godzilla being revealed as guilty by a french detective with an egg-shaped head, waxed mustache, and meticulous dress sense in a 1920s style.” gave me this:
Isn’t Poirot from Belgium? Not sure it changes the output a lot though…
Off topic, but I’ve been seeing a lot of people use ETA as of late in places it doesn’t make sense. I’ve always known it as an acronym for “Estimated Time of Arrival”.
Does it have some new meaning that I’ve missed out on?
“Excuse me, I am not FRENCH, I am BELGIAN” --David Suchet, an English actor playing a Belgian detective upset at being called French for international audiences
Mine weighs 1.5 tons and is going strongly into it’s sixth year of existence at about 95% capacity left. 3/4 of the year I’m driving it exclusively using power from my own roof. It uses about 14kWh/100km which is the equivalent of about 1.3 Liters of Gasoline. I fail to see how all of this is not an advantage.
You fail to see how basing an economy on the premise of (almost) everyone relying on 1.5ton machine to get around? I fail to see what’s so difficult to see
While relatively better, it’s still incredibly wasteful
I have an electric bike for those instances where I only need to transport myself and a backpack. But then again, I’ve got a few hectars of forest to take care of, family within a 100km radius and a girlfriend and a dog, so riding my bike is not always an option.
Yeah I am not doing that again. It was fun when I was single but not so much when you have kids. Yes I have done the sidecar thing and yes I have been to regions of the world where this is the norm. Not doing it again, all it takes is one accident and my family will be dead.
Yes, a noble idea, sure, but what do I do now with the ressources available to me? I am not a politician, people here laugh about the green party because most of them are farmers, land owners and factory workers, so voting green has some sort of meaning for the stats but doesn’t impact anything in local politics. I don’t own a company, I’m not responsible for public transport or any decisions related to it and I’m not rich enough for outright bribery lobbyism, so what I can do is:
turn most of my appliances to running on electricity
make as much electricity as possible locally from renewables
Hence, electric cars. Oh yeah, and taking the bike when possible, I do that.
Home batteries, wallbox for the cars (honestly, those are just fancy plugs with some switching logic) and panels was about 30k€, heatpump and floor heating was about 60k€. The heatpump helps with using even more of my own energy. Currently I’m almost 100% self sufficient (including mobility, except for lonmg range drives) between the middle of march and the middle of october, which is okay. At current inflation rates all this will have paid for itself in about 18 years in comparison to more traditional versions of all of it.
Anti-car folks are the same as anti-meat folks. Too busy being right to notice that even if they’re right, the rest of the world isn’t going to agree with them. So they shit on any idea for improvement that isn’t complete abstinence.
People in general aren’t going to give up cars anytime soon, just like people aren’t going to give up meat. It’d be great if everyone did, but that’s a pipedream if you think that could happen in at least the next decade or two. So maybe efforts to reduce the impact of those kinds of things aren’t necessarily wasted.
Coming straight from “unless 100% of people abstain 100% I’m not calling it change”-folks. There’s significant shifts in both of these issues. Meat more so, or leading ahead compared to cars, but the fact that some people aren’t going to drop one or either doesn’t change anything about that.
So maybe efforts to reduce the impact of those kinds of things aren’t necessarily wasted.
Not only are they not wasted, they are absolutely necessary. What’s important to understand is, however, that large parts of the negative impact of cars aren’t affected by EVs at all. It’s not just internal combustion engine exhaust pollution, it’s the waste of space, gigatons of asphalt for roads and parking, microplastics from rubber tires driven endless miles by a billion people, traffic congestions and the never-ending demand for another lane to fix them, ““cities”” sprawling out so far that everything is too far to get to by any means other than driving, pedestrian (if such a thing even still exists in your neck of the woods) safety, noise, socioeconomic factors such as the high upkeep costs vs low-income population who are reliant on a car in a car dependant world, …
We have to transition to EVs either way, but it’s not going to fix anything meaningful. And that’s just the neutral outlook, a real danger we’re facing is that through car manufacturers’ greenwashing that is already in full swing, we coax ourselves to a good eco conscience over our no-emissions cars and continue growing the dependency, which would eventually increase the impact. The only real way of reducing the impact is by reducing cars and car dependency where it’s possible. And people are, very slowly, waking up to the fact that this is more often the case than they were led to believe by lobby driven media and politics of the last 60 years.
It’s actually spewing tire and brake particles everywhere. It’s responsible for 30% of microplastics in our environment. It should not be anywhere near our main mode of transportation in the future.
