if your CEO had to work half as hard as you they would have a panic attack

Showroom7561 ,

And they would most certainly not have enough time to shit post on Twitter day and night, or be a good father to nearly a dozen kids.

Duxbellorum ,

I see where you’re going here but you have the wrong target, CEOs work ridiculously fucking hard, we’re talking 80-100hrs a week. Especially for publicly traded companies — the FCC and general corporate structure makes it basically impossible for them not to be doing ridiculously a lot all the time.

No, the lazy fucks who have more money than god are chairmen and board members. All of the idle involvement, none of the crushing fiduciary responsibility.

Seasoned_Greetings ,

Dude, this is depressingly true even on the smallest scale. I work for a guy who employs 6 people. He owns his business. We had him come out on site to help us one single time last summer and almost had a heatstroke doing what the rest of us do every day. But he’s the one who makes the phone calls and signs the checks so he makes a lot more than us.

I still would rather make a living doing this than working for a faceless corporation, but there are some aspects of capitalism you just can’t escape.

CeeBee ,

In all fairness, this doesn’t sound like an exactly fair comparison. If it’s a small business with only 6 people (7 including the owner) then he’s a lot more exposed financially than a larger company. It means he doesn’t have any of the protections that a larger or incorporated company would benefit from. If anything major goes sideways, then he’s finished. The workers can, in theory, pick up and go find a new job somewhere, but the owner could be financially ruined (this happened to my dad and he never recovered. Although to be fair to him, he busted his back working alongside everyone else, sometimes even longer than them).

The amount someone gets paid isn’t always a direct ratio for how much physical effort they put into something.

I don’t know your boss or anything, so I’m not trying to contradict you, I’m just pointing out something that came to my mind.

Seasoned_Greetings ,

You make a solid point. He assumes the risk and that’s why I’d still rather work for him than a big corporation.

The point I was making was just that the actual value of our company is created by us and we see a much smaller percent of the profit than he does. That compounded by the fact that he physically cannot hold the company up by himself comes off as condescending from our perspective sometimes.

He’s also a bit power trippy about it too. Like in that “boss vs leader” meme, he’s definitely the boss. Your dad sounds like a leader.

ZzyzxRoad , to mildlyinfuriating in HBO Max is removing features from my plan without reducing my price.

So right after I signed up at the beginning of this year, they switched from HBOMax to “Max.” I paid for a year in advance, and of course when I signed up there was nothing about them switching to a new brand. All of a sudden it was full of trash reality shows and ID Discovery true crime. I have no idea what possessed them to do that.

Then once it switched over I stopped being able to stream any new HBO shows on mobile and customer service won’t refund me any amount. Not that I can even communicate with them effectively. It’s all “chat” with AI or people who have no idea what I’m saying. Half the shows still won’t play on mobile for me.

TL;DR I paid for a year of HBO. They changed their selection a few months in. I lost mobile access to a bunch of their shows. And now I’m losing even more features before the year is up. That’s quite literally not what I paid for.

There are government websites you can report this to, though I do not know what effect that will have.

“Dues deducted from paycheck” and “typically must go through union instead of your supervisor or manager” are true. At the same time, they’re minor inconveniences compared to what a bad employer does to you.

TheSanSabaSongbird ,

As I said in another comment, my dues are automatically paid through my PTO account which in turn is paid into by my employer. So yeah, it’s still my money, but it’s not coming out of my paycheck at all and I honestly don’t even notice it.

At least in my area, most of your big trade unions have this as an option for members through the IBEW credit union.

sverit ,

I personally prefer going through the union instead of my supervisor. Less stressful for me.

therealrjp ,

It’s not always necessary to ‘go through the union’ instead of speaking with your manager. For pay, conditions and other disputes, yes, you’d want the collective bargaining of a union to get the best deal. For other things, it’s not always necessary.

I had a fall at work a couple of years ago. I fractured my ankle and was away from work until it healed and I could work again. When I returned, the problem area that lead to my fall hadn’t been looked at. I raised it with management myself and they dealt with my concerns and rectified the issue. I informed my health and safety union rep of what I was doing and he agreed to take it up if necessary. It wasn’t.

The company I work for has a long history of working with unions. They obviously have their motivations to improve efficiency and profitability but generally aren’t arseholes about it. The toxic culture I see in other companies only comes about when bosses can get away with murder because employees aren’t able to stand together.

Despite all the awful things that settlers have done to Aboriginals in Canada (and Native Americans in the USA), neither country’s Thanksgiving is about that. Canada’s Thanksgiving was originally a celebration of arrival in the New World. Over time, it became a harvest celebration.

Highly flammable, highly toxic, highly reactive, explodes on contact with air, explodes on contact with water, and lethal amounts can absorb through your skin (if it even gets that far). It was actually considered as a possible jet or rocket fuel in the 1950s and earned the nickname “Green Dragon” because it burns green. But the US government ended up rejecting it because even its exhaust is poisonous. It is in fact so dangerous that the government’s supply of it sat in storage until 2000 because that’s how long it took to invent a safe disposal method - a procedure whose actual scientific name is Dragon Slayer.

empireOfLove ,

The lights would be OK if they simply made them diffuse, low-intensity bulbs like they used to be in the 90’s. Bonus points for being behind a transparent textured plastic lens.

But no, they simply put open holes in casings that expose the most powerful SMD LED chip they could source.

insaneduck ,

It is the most powerful until you specifically want to buy led torch light then they put the cheapest possible light in it.

Norgur ,

Of course. The bright one all got bought up by Philips so you get a red LED when your smart light bulb is off or some shit.

StThicket ,

The problem isn’t the LED itself. The problem is engineers that read the datasheets where it shows which forward current they need. What they forget to think about is that the recommended forward current is for max brightness, so they slap whichever resistor they need, and never give it another thought.

Whenever I design a LED circuit that is only used as an indicator, I always make it 10% or less than recommended, because I do not need to burn away my retina when I test the boards.

empireOfLove ,

Of course that’s smart design. You’d think that would be something that becomes immediately obvious when the very first prototype PCB is put out and none of the engineers can look at the damn thing directly…
