I mean I know why ppl are scared it will kill off the fediverse, but the only thing that can kill off the fediverse is the Devs. As long as they don’t sell it or start involving a bigger company in the development, we are fine. And pull requests are transparent and therefore not a thread with enough common sense.
I see the risk but I don’t think it’s that imminent.
Even if they did, whatever open source code is available before they sold the code will always be under that license, meaning if you have an older version of the code you could simply fork it and start a new project with the same codebase. Furthermore, Lemmy is under the AGPL which means you couldn’t even rerelease it under a different license.
Lmao I was wondering if this will be the beginning of the new era of karmawhoring in lemmy because now you could figure out your total karma without busting out a calculator.
WefWef already displays point totals, as will many other 3rd party apps I’m sure. It’s also public in Kbin so you can just view your account from there to check your “Reputation” as they call it there.
I bought some fingers for the first time in years. They had two options so I went for the larger “family pack”. The box is slightly bigger but the amount of fingers is certainly less than or equal to what the normal size was when I last bought some, and even back then it was a quarter empty so always felt cheated. If I bought the normal size I’d be even more fuming.
I uninstalled Relay yesterday. It was a good decade but time to move on.
I get that there are workarounds to patch apps and bypass NSFW which I could very easily avail myself of, but the more I consider it the more this whole drama has put me off Reddit as a platform, and really any centralised platforms. I could still use them but I just don't want to.. staying as an active user just feels like tacit endorsement of communities being decimated by a company that doesn't even pay the folks that actually keep them going.
They’re already on the fediverse. Tens of thousands of people on thousands of servers saying things that make libsoftiktok and gaysagainstgrooming look like woke hippies.
The thing is, unlike big tech which wants you to see things that piss you off because it drives engagement and will actively put you in that situation, for the most part people tend to stick together in groups. You’ll get the odd troll looking for a thrill, but overall there isn’t an algorithm doing the Jerry Springer thing so other than a cheap thrill there’s no point to it.
Algorithms end up being really sneaky in that regard.
Nah, more like they call you a POS for not buying into the latest and greatest corporate need to sell you the newest hardware at top dollar - I think the last time I saw a tablet for sale it was about $1100 or something stupid like that.
Where are you shopping? Samsung has several great tablets available in a wide range of prices. The S series has the S6 lite, a great tablet with stylus, for $350. There are cheaper tablets without the stylus for cheaper.
Cheap tablets and phones legitimately suck. At this point $350-400 is the new $250.
That being said, I live in Australia - $1100 was just my estimated conversion - I think the full price of it was A$1300. It was at a JB Hi-Fi that I saw, I think the cheapest one I saw was A$600.
Even the PCMR community understands there are times a computer is overkill. You gonna lug your desktop around in your pocket for daily communication? Set up your laptop on a TV tray in from of your recliner? No, there are literal devices meant for both those situations.
