kbin is what you're talking about. It combines Mastodon with Lemmy in its own software and I can interact with both. Additionally it's not maintained and run by tankies.

csolisr , to fediverse in 12 years ago. Wonder what Lemmy will look like in 12 years?

Probably merged with all the other ActivityPub frontends into a single, hyper-customizable mega-app.

g8phcon2 ,
@g8phcon2@kbin.social avatar

I may have a user bias, but I think KBin is already started down that path, of actually making a usuable platform for both communities and users. Unlike say Lemmy that doesn't even really let you follow individual users, and Mastodon, which lets you follow Lemmy Communities, but its hard to follow threads because every post just looks like a Re-Toot by the community "user"

Then again Friendica is pretty nice too, it treats Lemmy communities just as if they are Friendica Forums, and it supports other platforms in addition to ActivityPub, including Diaspora*, and allows for integration with Email, Calendar, etc. with several very different "themes" to choose from, with the default, Firo(?), being a UI ver similar to the world's most popular social media platform, Facebook.

Rufio ,

Lemmy really needs to add the ability to interact with the rest of the fediverse like mastodon. That’s like…supposed to be the whole point of being part of the fediverse.

csolisr ,

I tried using Friendica as my main Fediverse hub. Unfortunately it still has big issues regarding the handling of large lists of users (I, for one, follow around 1000 Mastodon users plus about 300 Lemmy/Kbin communities), so with much pain in my heart I had to return to dual-wielding Akkoma + Lemmy.

The good thing about Free Software is you are never at the mercy of a single provider. If you and your friends like Lemmy, you can always use lemmy. The amount of content might not be what it once was, but you are welcome to use and change, or pay someone else to let you use/change, the service forever. (Like pump.io used to be the whole and now identi.ca is little more than a internet graveyard save me 4 bots, and six people that cross post to Mastodon, but even it may come back now that /u/@evan indicated he's adding ActivityPub to it now that its all the rage.

and I mean, why not?

fuck reddit, and any corporation that takes advantages of its users like reddit.

We are the ones who give you value, not vica versa. Their IPO depends on how many users they have. Not on the capabilities of your app. And they treated it vica versa.

From then I just made my parade for pro-privacy and for pro-anticorp that takes advantage of its users, deleted my META account thus my Instagram, Messenger etc. My Discord. I dont care anymore. Even if I dont have now I will find someday other options. Better or not, they are options. And Lemmy seems a very good one, even better I would say, just not as user friendly - yet. (Not that reddit’s app was good but we all knew that we had to use apollo/boost anyway)

It’s literally owned at large (undisclosed as a private company it is) part by Tencent , by one of the most major famous companies/puppets of CCP/Communist Chinese Party.

China is known for abolishing anybody who disobeys their rules and anybody who accuses them of not being more “Free” or for criticizing them. (Egh egh … Jack Ma). Obviously anybody who opposes their demands ceases to exist. Anything they can’t control, they’re banning it. It’s a known fact, not a tinfoil one. With dozens of examples:

  • Google
  • Winnie the pooh - coz a bunch of uni students said Xi looks like him and he got insulted. How shitty ego can you have
  • Peppa Pig: This animated children’s show was temporarily banned in China because it was seen as a subculture icon of the “shehuiren” (society person), a term used to describe people who run counter to the mainstream value and are usually poorly educated with no stable job.
  • Brad Pitt: Following the release of the movie “Seven Years in Tibet” (1997), which portrays a negative view of China’s activities in Tibet, Brad Pitt was banned from entering China.
  • Bohemian Rhapsody movie: All references to Freddie Mercury’s sexuality and AIDS diagnosis were removed
  • South Park: well … any fun who watches south park knows. And there’s even an episode dedicated to that.
  • Lady Gaga, Selina Gomez, Maroon 5, Chinese Celebrities like Fan Bingbing disappeared for several months in 2018 amidst a tax evasion scandal
  • "Time-travel" TV dramas

Anyway. We all know how China doesn’t like Criticism. This is just a list for the bots that will come down to accuse me of being tinfoil hatted.

And discord is literally a platform with NO-TEXT-ENCRYPTION. So, OBVIOUSLY, YEAH, they know everything you write there. Literally. And your profile name, and your history, your servers, chat logs, what games you like more if you connected your steam, what music you listen to if you connected your spotify etc.

Discord should be banned from the whole universe. Not just explode.

xpinchx ,

Same. I have to use bill.com for a contract, I swear they made their website as mobile un-friendly as possible because they push their app so hard. Like, I use you to submit one invoice a month I don’t need an app to do that, fuck off.

theangryseal ,

They can’t track your every interest to sell to other assholes if you don’t use their software though.

Now, don’t you feel sorry for the poor companies who can’t make money off of you when you’re on sites completely unrelated to theirs?

It just breaks my heart.

I wonder if civilization will last 12 years

BastingChemina ,

It made me think: can a Lemmy instance be hosted on a local network.

Like if the global internet is down but we maintained a local network in the village. Can we use Lemmy or mastodon?

Maybe when we have a good weather we manage to connect to the next village, so can we connect to their instance at this moment ?

vaultdweller013 ,

It would mpst likely come down to infrastructure maintenance capacity, so if we’re tallking regional or sub-regional maybe. For example southern california probably has enough industrial capacity that so long as raw materials can be acquired maintence would be relatively simple. But if we’re talking scattered individual townships without much intertown services then a BBS would probably be easier and more practical to maintain.

p1mrx ,

It is straightforward to run an isolated network with TCP/IP, DNS, and web servers. The hard part would be dealing with software that complains/fails if you’re not using HTTPS.

In general, you would want an offline copy of the entire software stack (e.g. a Gentoo Linux mirror) so you can patch whatever problems you encounter.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

You would have to run your own CA and get everyone to install your root cert on their devices. That what happens already with tech like smart cards and SSL inspection firewalls. It’s all about trusting the connection implicitly.

Agent641 ,

“Mate I dont trust you”

“Its okay, I have a certificate”

“This just says ‘Trust me bro’ and has your name at the bottom.”

“If you still dont trust me, just call this guy, he will vouch for me!”

“This is your own phone number.”

lemming007 ,

I don’t need a social network in a village, I’ll just step out of my house and yell.

Draconic_NEO ,
@Draconic_NEO@lemmy.world avatar

Depends on how dense or spread out it is. If it’s dense and everything is in one place you might not need anything more than just going outside.

If it is spread out though you may want communication methods other than mail and if people already have the computers and existing infrastructure (many places have cables for network and phone lines) to set up a local network then that might be the best option.
