Everywhere you look end stage capitalism is enshittifying itself. The neolibs, having insisted that There Is No Alternative, are confronted with their system in full and manifest self destruction.

Diprount_Tomato ,
@Diprount_Tomato@lemmy.world avatar

What makes you think capitalism is dying? What I see is just the neverending economic cycle

markr ,

The current version of the system is literally self destructing by destroying the ecosystem. It is also destroying its other external interface: human consciousness, but that is a more complicated discussion.

Diprount_Tomato ,
@Diprount_Tomato@lemmy.world avatar

Not destroying the environment is as easy as researching less polluting and more productive methods, like nuclear fusion. The only thing left to do in that matter is not making it deficitary

Innovation is one of the main things that keep capitalism going, but state-supported or state-ignored monopolies prevent it from happening as people really have no other alternative apart from the monopoly company to buy goods and services

markr ,

So thanks for providing a great example of the aggressively blinding grip of ideology over our ability to understand our reality. We’ve already broken the ecosphere. A nonexistent technology is not going to save us from the disaster that has already happened. Also the owners of the energy supply are aggressively defending their vastly profitable businesses from any threat to their profits. They’ve done quite well at that, see the comment from you.

brap_gobbo ,

The way I see it is this search for money won’t destroy the world completely, but it will probably end up with humans leading their own extinction event and taking lots of other species with us. The world will eventually heal many of its wounds… without us.

markr ,

Yes sure, it’s only going to massively degrade human civilization.

GlennMagusHarvey , to workreform in Pettiness as its peak. Trimmed trees at universal studios picket lines.
@GlennMagusHarvey@mander.xyz avatar

This is horrible and obnoxious tree trimming. Bad for the trees, bad for urban tree canopy, bad for urban heat management, bad for carbon sequestration, and done as an insult to labor.

CeruleanRuin , (edited )

The city should fine the fuck out of NBCUniversal for the full cost of replacing those trees. Those are not healthy trees.

jonne ,

They did issue a fine of a whopping $250.

LongbottomLeaf ,

Jesus. That doesn’t even cover one tree, not to mention labor. Even if they were fined per tree.

azdood85 ,

Its amazing how fines for businesses are still at 1950s levels but individual (none rich folk) fines have kept up with inflation since the 80s.

Kelly ,

To be honest I thought tree law was going to be more punitive

p1mrx ,

I asked our AI overlords for an appropriate punishment:

The company executives have to spend the weekend acting as city gardeners, complete with typical gardening attire, tending to the local parks and trees - ensuring the community that they’re committed to their “root-level” duties.

azdood85 ,

Every day that we live with AI the more I realize they should be replacing our politicians and executives of major corporations.

I dont care if I have to bow to R2D2 one day, that sounds better than the dystopian hell hole we have now.

jonne ,

It’s almost like corporations and the wealthy have outsized control over politics.

psyqology ,

Fines are literally only for poor people. They’ve done studies on it. Shit is crazy.

jonne ,

Yep, for the wealthy it’s just the cost of doing business.

teamevil ,

Where as I don’t disagree with the timing being retaliatory, my parents have similar trees and my father had me do that just before he passed away. I was convinced I was killing the trees and turns out their canopy is larger than ever now, so it might not be terrible for trees, but still timing is bullshit.

Wolf ,

I’m not an arborist and we don’t have those type of tree where I live, but I have worked in landscaping before. My understanding any substantial trimming like that I’ve done in the past should never be done in the hottest part of the year because the tree will have trouble retaining water.

regular_human ,
@regular_human@lemmy.world avatar

That’s the main thing. Pollard your trees when they’re in winter dormancy, not mid summer while they’re actually using leaves to respirate

Catoblepas ,

This looks more like tipping than pollarding to me. If it’s supposed to be pollarding whoever’s doing it is shit at it. Tipping is harmful to trees, and based on the photos of the tree prior to it being cut it looks like it may have been tipped once in the year already (likely why they weren’t issued a permit by the city and cut it illegally).

regular_human ,
@regular_human@lemmy.world avatar

Oh yeah, these are obdurate plant butchers in action. This is inexcusable

too_much_too_soon ,

bad for carbon sequestration,

The trim is negligible when you are talking about carbon sequestration in the scheme of things too. I’m not sure how the other points stand up either - but the timing would suggest it is an insult to the labour.

Xeon , to mildlyinfuriating in This SUV parking

While trucks are complete nonsense to have for 9/10 owners, sometimes it’s choosing between two evils. Either park it like this, or have it stick out this far at the front, blocking traffic flow.

Instead of being infuriated by the way it’s parked, we should be just because it’s a truck that Is useless to have, especially in the Netherlands.

MeanEYE ,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

In my country it’s actually illegal to do this. Law states that wherever you are parking you have to make sure there are 1.8m left for the pedestrians.

break1146 ,
@break1146@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Block the flow of traffic. Vehicle traffic has predefined rules to deal with this and it happens all the time. Now you’re forcing pedestrians to go onto the road creating a safety hazard. Strollers, like with OP, or disabled people or really you name it are severely disadvantaged by this, just because this person needed a gigantic car thought vehicle traffic was more important than pedestrians.

Xeon ,

I’m not saying one is better than the other, all I’m saying is that both ways it sucks and trucks in general are just infuriating.

break1146 ,
@break1146@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’m saying one is better than the other, significantly even. But yes, trucks in general are infuriating. They’re more dangerous for other road users in every single way. You can barely see people over the hood. Other road users are not crash compatible and they use up a lot of space and use a lot of fuel. There’s no reason for these to be around other than feeding people’s egos.

TommySalami ,

I mean, the answer is “Your vehicle is too large to park here.” It’s one of the reasons I drive a smaller car, parking is a bitch where I’m from and I’d hate passing up spots because I can’t fit.

WhatASave , to mildlyinfuriating in Coming from nestle of all people

What the fuck does that even mean lol. I didn’t think dark mode even did that?

new_guy ,

It kinda does if your screen is OLED. The black pixels are actually turned off on OLED screens.

On other type of screens - like LCD - the backlight is always turned on

Knusper ,

Yep, but then we are talking about actually black backgrounds, which is normally a big no-no in UI design.

Viper_NZ ,

A black pixel in an LCD is in the ‘on’ position with voltage applied. So dark mode uses more power on an LCD, though the number is small.

WhatASave ,

True, but I’ve heard it’s still negligible and almost every dark mode is dark, not pure black.

dukeGR4 ,

With OLED, yeah it is indeed more sustainable cause less energy usage but damn it’s a stupid thing to say and remind from their end. It’s already implied
