I can't imagine how something like this might exist solely to boost engagement and draw additional user accounts. I really enjoyed the 2022 one. Some of the smaller indie game alliances turned me on to some really cool games. And some of the artwork was legitimately beautiful. It had great twists, like doubling the canvas.

I was online when they changed it to white pixels only. Watching the board be erased was weirdly emotional. It was cool seeing the community naturally come together to delete it all from the inside out, in the shape of an expanding heart (roughly).

Not saying it’s not a gimmick or anything. Just a cool event that a lot of different communities have fun with

Toxic sweaty players are the bane of internet gaming. Can’t beat each other so they go to smurfing. Fuck it up for everyone.

Dee ,
@Dee@lemmy.world avatar

Yup. It’s why the only time I play online games now is with friends or not at all. Even then it’s pretty much just co-op against the game rather than against other players. I only have so much energy for gaming and am willing to spend zero of that energy on toxic nonsense.

Alteon ,

Its a shame in a way but me Im juste muting when possible. Dont want to depend on mate and I have none on gaming actually.

Ive even played again to counter strike source. So much fun in the old ways. No pressure. Trash talk to fun. You can change server by navigating on browser if unfriendly.

I don’t want to be tilted when I play. And I report a lot too XD.

On LOL you can mute by default in settings. In ranked I mute as soon someone start raging and I don’t care of the rank finally.

By this way, ignoring others, you can focus and improve your gameplay easier.

When its too much and I don’t see non sense to mute in an online game, I stop play or go solo on others games. After all my steam library is full of unplayed games.

If one day I do an smurf, shame on me, it will be just to be toxic and don’t care of the game and go trash others by revenge. I’ve no smurf yet and I’m an “old” gamer now.

I hate twitch/YouTube/esport for all the non sense they made theses lasts ten hear and how they influenced in a very bad way the gaming scene who were in a sense “free”. Ty capitalism (I know its non sense but in a way )

Dee ,
@Dee@lemmy.world avatar

I understand that, but muting toxic people on those team games defeats the purpose for me. The point is to communicate and work together, when you can’t do that effectively because they’re being shitheads then I’ll take my ball and go home, so to speak. I have plenty of wonderful single player games and am lucky enough to have some friends for co-op games when I’m in the gaming mood.

You do you, but that technique just doesn’t work for me, personally. I think it’s good to get a different perspective like yours though, to each their own ☺️

TransLinux ,

Its true, but thanks ping’s system exist and on the game I play is fully efficient. But in a sense I’m still like you. I’ve stopped OW definitively for example bc of what you said.

Me too. The only two games I have been playing in the last 2 years are insurgency, division 2 and payday 2. All PvE. Fuck competitive players. The little time I have available to play, I want to have fun.

Fubar91 ,

You mean competitive games right? Cause it sounds like you should avoid competitive games and game modes. The competitiveness is the point on of competitive games. Which is fine, not everyone needs to enjoy every game genre/mode. Just don’t think it’s the players fault in your outlined situation.

partial_accumen ,

I really like games that have a separate “competitive” section of gameplay…then I avoid it like the plague.

cheesemonk ,

But when I play casual I still get lots of “my team sucks” and “why are you even playing you’re so bad”. I tell them to hit ranked if they’re that sweaty but I’d rather they just fuck off entirely.

Drye ,

I’m waiting for some age verification system so that us older gamers can enjoy playing games without having to compete when we don’t want to. I don’t need to feel elite, I need to feel an enjoyable gaming experience without feeling like I’m not doing something right.

I don’t want a guide to tell me the best build for my character, or tell me how much damage I’m doing. I want to figure shit out without having some kid berate me for not “taking it seriously”.

Bring back games for enjoyment, not achievement farming to brag. No one fucking cares how “good” you are at -any- game when you’re my age.

Speculater ,
@Speculater@lemmy.world avatar

@housepanther@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I continue to maintain that Chromebooks are toys. Any real productivity is just not possible with them. I would rather an older Lenovo ThinkPad T4XX series that I bought off of Amazon than a brand new Chromebook.

SexyTimeSasquatch ,

Lenovo is a Chinese government data gathering operation though.

Pandantic ,
@Pandantic@lemmy.world avatar

As a teacher who teaches students with Chromebooks, I concur.

mean_bean279 ,

As a former K-12 sysadmin who maintained 10,000 chromebooks on my own I think that either of you doesn’t fully grasp how crucial these devices are. Web access is 99% of school device usage and for the few random CTE/STEM products or PASCO devices for science I’ll get a dedicated laptop locker with 10 laptops in it for checkout that run Windows with a base golden image and (preferably entune, but let’s be real) apps in SCCM Software Center so I can quickly wipe them when inevitably a student with more free time than myself either breaks it, deletes system32, or loads it full of porn or Counter Strike.

It’s for students. It’s cheap, it’s effective, it has minimal vulnerabilities that cannot be quickly resolved in 1 minute with a power wash. It has an easy admin interface for techs so I can have them manage smaller details, and it allows me to quickly get them repaired, or cheaply replace them.

zxo ,

Chromebooks are nearly perfect student devices, especially newer ones.

They charge quickly, have long battery lives, and most things students would need are easily accessible on Chrome. As well, it’s a little bit harder for students to exploit and put their own apps on in my experience, because it requires more knowledge than what most students have to counter things like social media blocks (Games are kinda an exception though).

While they probably aren’t the best for other forms of usage, they are very good school devices. I wouldn’t even consider using Macs or Windows laptops at schools instead.

mean_bean279 ,

Back in 2013 when the first Chromebooks were rolling out to education they basically subsidized the hell out of them. Google Admin and the licenses came free for the first like 1k or so devices if I recall. It allowed small districts to get them even cheaper and lessened the costs for us larger districts as well. It made it impossible to deny over a comparable windows device that would have easily cost 3x as much and more importantly it required 1/100th the work to setup and maintain. Plus GADS included a whole suite of apps that still had a cost on the windows side since O365 was still in its infancy and MS wasn’t sure how to charge for it.

blindbunny ,

If the os would stop breaking my Linux install I might disagree with you.

cousinofjah ,
@cousinofjah@twit.social avatar

I stopped trying to do Linux on the Chromebook after the third time this happened to me. Lust SSHed to another machine and tried Termux, then gave up and went to a regular laptop.

bdonvr ,

Eh? They’re fine, especially now that they can run Android apps.

At least, for the kind of person who does 99% of their computing in a browser. Which nowadays is actually quite a huge percentage…

Not for me, but I don’t hate them at all. For what they do they are quick and reliable. I’m just not the intended consumer

housepanther ,
@housepanther@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I am struggling to figure out who the intended consumer is in the first place. 🤣

bdonvr ,

I’m telling you, the average person nowadays (if they even use a desktop/laptop computer at all!) just uses the browser and basically nothing else ever. Maybe an office suite. Chromebooks are perfect for them.

housepanther ,
@housepanther@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

Yes, I know. I was being facetious. I cannot help but hate all things Google.

bdonvr ,

Yeah it would be cool if we could have a Firefox version.

SimplePhysics ,
zxo ,

Probably schools, those bad boys are pretty much designed to be used in schools. They are easy for the sysadmin to manage and they are easy to use for the student. They charge fast and stay charged for a long time, and most things a student would need can be found online. They also make it harder for a student to brick their own computer or do things they shouldn’t. Even if they are horribly Google-ridden, they do work well in schools.

thawed_caveman ,

dudewitbow ,

2 days ago, i ticked off a player (probably had been called a loser at least like 6 times) just because i went around killing prople with a C4 vest in battlebit

NimbleSloth ,

I agree. I picked it up a few days ago and have been playing, man do I ever get smoked, people are insanely sweaty. I thought maybe it was due to me not playing a ton of FPS games lately and getting a bit older… I decided to play a round of battlefield and did much better. People are sweating their ass off, I’m sure it also doesn’t help that I don’t know the maps yet.

pickle_party247 ,

I went straight into it from playing a lot of BF4 recently and it really took me aback. Weapon balancing is pretty awful as well, SMGs are much too powerful- the Vector has no recoil and a high fire rate so people can kill you in less than a second with it.
