ilex OP ,

This comment is vertically long. Paragraphs and sentences are short.

There are two senses of the word “or.” Inclusive and exclusive.

Inclusive | one, the other, or both
Exclusive | one, the other, but not both

In English, most instances are inclusive, like above. Exclusive might look like: Is the US President Joe Biden or not? Is that a square or circle, or neither?

I took you question to be you asking if the or was inclusive, but in a normal, funny way. The T/F statements define why ‘both’ can be an option. ‘Both’ might still be wrong factually, but logically, it’s possible.

This style of logic is often called Boolean algebra. You’ll see it often in programming and simple search engines. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propositional_calculus

It is literally Logic 101 at most universities.

30isthenew29 ,

That’s why it looked familiar.

Nika03 ,

Look at us and monkeys. We evolved to suit our environment and overcome challenges that we faced. Monkeys didn’t evolve because they didn’t go out and face these things.

Edit: basically, we generally don’t fuck the monkeys and anthropomorphic otters generally wouldn’t fuck normal otters. I’d classify it as zoophilia.

www.flathub.org is using Let’s encrypt. Their certs only last 90 days so you need a script to make sure they are updated and pushed to your site. flathub.org uses Globalsign which lasts for 13 months. My guess is they don’t have a process for reconciling the two types of end dates.

Even just manually, how hard is it to put a reminder in a calendar somewhere? I’ve never understood how/why this happens, it’s really but difficult.

Molecular0079 ,

You don’t even need to automate. Certbot comes with a systemd timer called certbot-renew.timer which does this for you.

On LCD displays dark mode actually uses more electricity; the brightness is always there, and you need to power the liquid-crystal layer to block that light to result in darker colours.

This whole myth about darker screens saving energy goes way back to the old CRT days when it actually did save some energy.

Yall remember Blackle?

Ultra980 ,

Many phones have OLED displays, which physically turn off the pixels in black areas. Since the site is on mobile, it does make a bit of sense.

Holzkohlen ,

But then most dark modes aren’t pitch black. I guess it might save a bit of power by just being at a low brightness. Anyways I need my dark mode and also night mode.

SkyeStarfall ,

Less brightness means less light emitted by the diodes means less power is used. They may not turn off, but they still use less.

HatchetHaro ,
@HatchetHaro@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Fun fact! Many OLED displays dim the whole image not by making the diodes dimmer, but by pulsing the diodes fast enough to match the desired brightness of each pixel.

You can test this by taking your OLED phone, pulling up an image, and then waving it around at different brightness levels; the observed image would become blurry at high brightness levels, but would separate into distinct “frames” at lower brightness.

I’m not sure if every OLED does this; just from the phones that I have used.

VediusPollio ,
@VediusPollio@lemmy.world avatar

Depends on the resting state of the LCD.

MoonEqualEqualCheese ,

Saves energy for OLED, not LCD.

VediusPollio , (edited )
@VediusPollio@lemmy.world avatar

Yes for OLED. Sometimes for LCD.

From what I understand, LCDs can have a resting state that will either stop light, or a resting state that will let light through. The backlight remains on, but a panel that natively blocks the light will require less power when showing black.

Zephyr_0713 ,
@Zephyr_0713@lemmy.world avatar

In case you are using an OLED screen or one of its variants, the difference is noticeable since they turn off the pixels that are black and, therefore, less electricity is consumed.

Well, there’s three bikes in this picture and only one car. The car is taking up more space than all of the bikes. Simple solution: get rid of that car parking spot and turn it into bike parking. Now more people can visit the businesses!

waigl ,

The car also has a Dutch license plate. While I am generally a big proponent of bike friendly infrastructure, even at the expense of car amenities, the Dutch of all the people don’t need any more prodding in that direction.

toothpaste_sandwich ,

They certainly do. There’s still wayyyy too many people driving everywhere, with just one person per car.

PeleSpirit ,

But that’s not how it’s currently set up, both cars and bikes can coexist. These bikes shouldn’t be parked there just like cars shouldn’t go into the sidewalk.

Kempeth ,

There are multiple additional parking spaced behind the car. Replacing one spot with bike parking still allows both modes to visit the shop but provides an increased number of visitor spaces.

domin8r ,

The problem is not lack of bike parking, we have plenty of that in the Netherlands 😊 We’re just sort of spoiled and like to park our bike right at the place we need to be. If you do that normally it usually isn’t a problem.

NPC OP ,

fiat_lux ,

Even just people with luggage and baby strollers are fucked. People who are blind also are really disadvantaged here. The scars on the shins of people who have used a white cane for years are numerous.

I'm a fan of fewer cars on the road, but things like this are also reasons why we need still some forms of direct transport access. Travelling a few blocks from a public transport stop can still be filled with hazards like this that prevent people from arriving at their destination.

Kempeth ,

It’s not an old video game. They’re not immovable parts of the level design. You can likely move or bump them out of the way enough to pass through.

Meanwhile right next to them is a huge metal box that stole 4 times as much sidewalk, transported half as many people and is literally un-moveable if you’re not in a heavy motorized vehicle.

nbafantest , to mildlyinfuriating in Some people truly believe the whole world exists just for them

stevedidWHAT ,

It’s not legal to ride your bike on the sidewalk in the US, no?

stewsters ,

It’s a local thing. My town doesn’t let you ride on the main street sidewalk, but you can everywhere else. There are signs posted at the end of the street that you would never notice.

That being said, ride in the road. Assert some dominance.

Zyansheep ,

Unless the cars on the road are going to fast for comfort or are too agressive, then do whatever you can to not feel like you are going to die at any moment.

Kempeth ,

When I learned to drive there was a pretty big emphasis put on paying attention to cyclists in round abouts. Nowadays the official rule for how a bicycle should go through a round about is: in the middle of the road. Even as a car driver I love the boldness of this approach.
