what even is a “more sustainable experience”

@SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml avatar

dark theme › slower battery usage › charging less often › less electricity usage › less coal power plants › less emissions › solved global warming. It’s simple really. Now you just need to turn off the tap while you brush your teeth.

dustojnikhummer ,

Only on OLED phones

nodsocket ,

Do they actually explain that anywhere on their site, besides the short sentence from the pic?

SubArcticTundra ,
@SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml avatar

🤷 But well pointed out, I did have to make a lot of assumptions to come up with this explanation. I can’t see what else they’d be implying though

Uno ,

Yeah, I’m assuming that’s the implications. Just more of “unplug chargers you aren’t using” and other now useless advice from 10 years ago before regulations were introduced/new evidence was found

In case anyone’s wondering, unplugging chargers apparently only saves 0.5% of household energy use. And on this page about saving electricity on computer use, “turning on dark mode” doesn’t even make the list of recommendations. Basically the main thing recommended was “put your computer to sleep when you’re not using it.”

nodsocket ,

The dark theme on their website isn’t even completely black… It’s a dark grey. The power consumption difference even on OLEDs would be very little, if anything at all.

Do… Do people leave the tap on? Why?? That doesn’t make sense.

SubArcticTundra ,
@SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml avatar

Exactly, I think it was a strawman made up by corporations so that they would look good trying to discipline people (put them on a moral pedestal)

randint ,
@randint@feddit.nl avatar

Believe me, it’s not a strawman. My friend does this, and I have tried many times to stop him from doing that, including trying to reason with him or just turning it off for him. He still does it. Not that he refuses to turn off the tap, he always agrees to remember to turn it off but just never remembers to do so.

Capitalism

momo420 ,

Yeah, what about it?

paris ,

YouTube makes money by showing ads on videos people watch. If they show people the videos they want to watch, they get to show more ads before someone stops watching YouTube for the day. This incentives YouTube to surface the videos that people will watch for the longest time with no regard for anything but their advertisers’ willingness to have their ads played on said videos.

Also it’s expensive to moderate a platform so big that one in three humans uses it.

momo420 ,

Thank you, I think your answer is much better. Still I don’t think “Capitalism” is an informative answer to why/how these search suggestions work.

sci , to mildlyinteresting in Ancient Iran had air conditioning

Not really mentioned in the picture but Qanats are basically underground aquaducts, bringing water from nearby mountains to the cities. They can be up to 70km long. We went into one when I visited Iran.

“Furious Men”

Yeah, because bigot women don’t exist, do they

EDIT: Thanks for the 19 downvotes and a total of one person caring to articulate. I love civil discussion.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know why one implies the other doesn’t exist. The fact is there are a bunch of MRA dudes very pissed off that a movie about a toy they likely never played with dares to be in theaters. And the things they say about it are amusing.

Syrc ,

What I’m saying is, it’s an anonymous site. That person has no way to tell the gender of those reviewers, but they assumed it was men anyway.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I think it’s a fair assumption. I also think it doesn’t really matter since this is Lemmy Shitpost.

Syrc ,

It’s really not. Especially considering how feminists are always (oftentimes rightfully) complaining about gender assumptions, they definitely shouldn’t do that themselves. It wasn’t even necessary, “from furious men” could’ve been removed altogether and the comment would’ve conveyed the same feeling, without the pointless sexism.

Also yes, it’s Lemmy Shitpost and the post fits, I was “complaining” about the original author.

orrk ,

It sort of dose, Women are just as vile at this stuff, and sometimes more so, as men.

Take the calls for death to trans peoples, a lot of that is coming from women, self avowed feminists no less, and we have had a collective blind spot to these people for so long because ironically the Feminist movement fell into reinforcing gender stereotypes
