99% of humans have the complete opposite reaction when the animal in question is a mosquito.

Kacarott ,

Ok but idk if the flying atrocities that are mosquitoes deserve a title as high as “animal” tho

Kusimulkku ,

That’s just a deanimalization tactic people use to justify MURDER and GENOCIDE

jubilationtcornpone ,

Mosquito genocide is the one kind of genocide that I am totally fine with. Hell, I’ll participate in it with glee.

Rolive ,

I have a kill-on-sight policy with mosquitoes.

debil ,

reads scroll of genocide for mosquitos

it was cursed

Catsrules ,

Unfortunately I think they are animals based on the animal definition.

An animal is a particular kind of living organism, one that can move voluntarily and can find and digest food.

Hammocks4All ,

Mosquitos are almost parasites and are vectors for disease. It’s a pretty different relationship we have with them.

buddascrayon ,

Well, let’s unpack this thought then.

Pigs (you know, the animal that bacon actually comes from) mostly live off of human waste (aka garbage). They are the origin of the H1N1 virus (also known as the flu) and when not contained they are considered absolute pests.

How are they different than mosquitos again?

Hammocks4All ,

Not sure if you are arguing for or against pig farming. I’m against mosquito farming btw.

buddascrayon ,

Wait, you don’t want to come to my mosquito farm and pet the skeeters???

You can even play with the baby skeeters in the huge brackish water pond in the back! It’s completely free of predators!

Hammocks4All ,

I appreciate the humor but I think your initial comparison is pretty bad.

Wild pigs don’t depend on waste from humans. They’re invasive to the Americas, sure, but there is a huge difference between hunting an invasive species that is wreaking havoc in the ecosystem (and possibly going through your “waste”) versus raising domesticated pigs in abysmal conditions — and all other associated negative consequences — for a market with inflated demand.

Also, the issue with H1N1 is, again, mostly due to farming.

So, no, pigs inherently aren’t “almost parasites” and although they can get diseases, like all animals, the threat of transmitting those diseases to humans come from farming practices.

Mosquitoes are consequential and our relationship with pigs is largely voluntary. The difference is enormous.

Ironfacebuster , (edited )

I can kill a mosquito by clapping my hands

The pig would probably think I’m petting it or something

Edit: for the record I mean no ill will, I just thought it was funny to say because well, mosquitos are tiny!

buddascrayon ,

I laughed 😂

Agent641 ,

When you swat them they just get really annoyed

spacesatan ,

Curious what the fantasy world you live in looks like. Where industrial hog farms have garbage trucks heading into them and not trucks of purpose grown feed. I guess you wouldn’t have many landfills either.

buddascrayon ,
spacesatan ,

You realize that’s newsworthy precisely because it’s uncommon right?

buddascrayon ,

It’s really not uncommon at all. That was just the first article that popped up on a Google search. Here’s the second:

vice.com/…/pigs-are-eating-las-vegas-casino-lefto…

mojofrododojo ,

texas has huge issues with feral hog populations. get yourself a squadron of helos, go find the herds and turn them into bacon: feral hog bacon is like cheating the system, they’re a nuisance and threaten livelihoods and kill more people than sharks.

FelixCress , to lemmyshitpost in Windows 11

Forced updates should be illegal.

superkret ,

No one forces you to update. People simply choose to run an OS where automatic updates are the default.
And that OS also lets you permanently disable automatic updates. It just doesn’t give you a straight-forward GUI option for it.

Ookami38 ,

Critically wrong in this case. Crowdstrike updates push outside of, and regardless of, os settings. This wasn’t, and never was, an os issue, it’s a crowdstrike issue. Good try though.

FelixCress ,

Tell me you don’t have a clue what you are talking about without telling me.

frog_brawler ,

Believe it or not, CrowdStrike’s model forces updates and people pay a lot of money for it to “handle things” for them. I had to deploy it at a previous employer about 8 years ago. It was stupid.

Katana314 ,

Problem is, an individual computer user often isn’t the victim of that computer’s lack of updates.

Any time a site you like has been DDOSed, it’s often from thousands of zombie computers infected by some malware that their owners aren’t aware of. Those infections are generally made possible by unclosed security holes. So, you know…not updating.

lightnsfw ,

I’m fine being part of a botnet if that’s the trade off for not using windows 11. Just got it installed on my testing PC at work and I hate it so much.

HauntedCupcake ,

Forced updates of an optional corporate anti-virus designed to immediately detect and distribute information on threats should be illegal?

Or is this just an unrelated comment?

Angry_Autist ,

You really don’t understand how many millions of hours of human effort force updates have destroyed.

Yes, there should always be, ESPECIALLY IN CORPORATE ENVIRONMENTS, a point where the client can vet and approve the update.

This recent Crowdstrike problem is proof of it. You LITERALLY witnessed proof as 1/4 of the world basically shut down for the day. This would have been avoided in many cases if the update was vetted by the local IT teams.

HauntedCupcake ,

So CrowdStrike shouldn’t allow real time threat protection? That’s what caused the issue. It needs to update its threat library to do deal with any day 1 attacks. It’s one of the main reasons it’s used

Only gave Skyrim a try a few times, the combats a bit clunky and the game feels repetitive. It can look very good though, especially with mods. The world is interesting.

morphballganon ,

the combats a bit clunky

Compared to what?

cyberpunk007 ,

Compared to nothing, it’s clunky

morphballganon ,

You can’t think of a game with non-clunky combat, and you still mark Skyrim down for it?

cyberpunk007 ,

Your argument is just weird. Ok how about elden ring. Doom eternal. Cyberpunk 2077. The Witcher 3. Stardew valley. I dunno what you want from me but the combat in Skyrim is clunky.

morphballganon ,

Asking you to clarify your argument is not me making my own. That’s a straw man fallacy.

Also Skyrim’s combat is much better than Stardew Valley’s…

cyberpunk007 ,

You’re entitled to your view and that’s ok.

Rai ,

I’m hella on your side, “compared to what” is a fucking stupid question. I love Skyrim and it’s clunkier than old style Monster Hunter games. Mods help but dang… it clunky. It’s only NOT clunky when doing archery the whole time, which is why everyone does that. The arching is good… also with mods… and in VR.

Even Fallout 4’s combat is less clunky and it’s CLUNK AS HELL

Rai ,

cringe

morphballganon ,

Stardew has no dual wielding… only one type of attack per weapon. There are bombs, sure.

Compared to Skyrim though?

Rai ,

THAT’s your response?

That’s very funny.

morphballganon ,

… are we playing different games, or are you a troll?

kronarbob ,

It’s the combat part of the game that made it hard to me to play Skyrim. I use some mod and play a mage to avoid playing with weapons, because I find the combat system slow and boring.

I’m replaying Dark Messiah. The game aged, but its combat style is still as dynamic as I remembered. Back then, It’s because I compared it to the Oblivion one that I didn’t played Oblivion more than a couple of minutes.

Koen967 ,

The combat is honestly my problem with most Bethesda games. I enjoy the environment and story, but the combat feels lackluster to me. Hits with any kind of weapon feel like they miss impact on the enemy. Other than that, great games.

AnarchistsForKamala ,

no one is paying for animal abuse or torture

tomi000 ,

Exactly! My ancestors didnt pay for slavery, they just wanted cotton. Everyone need cotton, right? I mean they wouldve harvested the cotton themselves, but it was way cheaper from neighboring farmers for whatever reason. That didnt concern them though, they had enough prpblems!

AnarchistsForKamala ,

comparing slaves to animals is what slavers do

tomi000 ,

Please dont twist my words. I didnt compare anything. And if I did, I would have compared animal cruelty with slavery (both as unethical acts), not animals with slaves (the recipients of cruelty).

AnarchistsForKamala ,

Good point, but I never said they were the same, nor did I compare them. I just made an argument about passive involvement in unethical doings which some regard as normal.
