That rock looks very heist-able.

grrgyle , to linuxmemes in What's going on y'all?

Just kind of pondering my key combinations in tmux, vim, etc. I’ve started using “layers” and “combo keys” in my keyboard layout and it’s really showing me what’s possible

souless ,

Powerful combo, mastering shortcut keys opens up a whole realm of relaxed posture. Mouse is effective but weak in comparison to efficiency of the keyboard at least when editing text files.

grrgyle ,

Yes I’m starting to realise that with layers one need never leave to home row at all.

I haven’t even messed with mouse macros, which I’m hopeful will reduce my need to leave the keeb even moreso

Maggoty , to mildlyinteresting in The Poole Museum in the UK has a display behind glass of a rock donated to the museum by a young child.

To be fair, that’s a really cool looking rock.

DJDarren , to mildlyinteresting in The Poole Museum in the UK has a display behind glass of a rock donated to the museum by a young child.

I know that museum, it’s very cool. Poole is a nice place.

DJDarren ,

By which I mean, only the best rocks get displayed in Poole museum. And this is the best rock.

VelvetStorm , to insanepeoplefacebook in Sovcit was "robbed" by a cop.

I would think if they can’t afford to be this stupid then they should just get the license plates, driver’s license and insurance and be done with it.

JoshuaFalken , to mildlyinteresting in The Poole Museum in the UK has a display behind glass of a rock donated to the museum by a young child.

Imagine how amazing you would feel as a child to have a possession of yours put on display at a museum. Even if it was temporary, you’d remember that for the rest of your days.

I was part of a summer camp that was run in conjunction with the local university where we got to design a museum exhibit and put it on at the university’s museum dedicated to anthropology and culture. We got to choose the theme of the exhibit (which didn’t have to fit the museum) and chose the local fossils since they were easy to find in any creek and we all loved going out and hunting them. I remember my part of the exhibit was crinoids, and I wrote the title card and designed the display- the crinoids fossils were in some sand. I don’t remember much else because we’re talking almost 40 years ago. But I remember how awesome it was to be in the museum and see people looking at my display.

ArmoredThirteen ,

I learned how to paint minis in the basement of a hobby shop, basically as small town daycare while my mom worked on the floor above. My very first mini got put on display in that basement next to the work by the person who taught me. It was hilariously out of place. After college I was visiting again, like 10+ years later, it was still there proudly collecting dust. The guy who taught me had apparently recently died and they were going to put a bunch of the stuff in storage since the owner was having an emotionally difficult time seeing it all there. I managed to recover my mini just to be sure it didn’t get lost with everything. Now I have it proudly displayed in my room. It’s seen a lot of adventures

They were so advanced, all their records were stored on computers. Then their security vendor pushed an update.

PythagreousTitties ,

That makes me think… I fully expect history to view our current information age as a digital dark ages once everything on the Internet is lost.

ArtieShaw ,

I went to a weird conference about 10 years ago and it was very much about data retrieval and long term storage of digital media. I'd say that the speaker was 80% dead on and 20% full of shit. One thing he was very clear about: he lost his own wedding photos due to his own overconfidence in digital storage technology and his wife is still deeply pissed about it.

I still have my wedding photos on CD rom somewhere, so I'm sure they're safe. /s

In related news, my parents are downsizing and my mom just asked me if I wanted my great-grandparents' wedding certificate. It's in great condition.

PythagreousTitties ,

Yeah. Maybe the old folks had it right printing emails lol

Blue_Morpho ,

Copy those photos now. 20 years ago I was obsessed with burning DVD’s to last a long time. I researched the best quality media that was rated for 100 years (Verbatim AZZO). I used diagnostic tools from a specialized cd burning forum that showed the pi/pio errors so you knew if you had made a quality burned DVD. (Even though burners were rated 2x-16x, each burner had a sweet spot of minimal errors for a particular media. In my case it was 4x.)

Last year my niece said the wedding photo DVD I gave her 15 years ago was unreadable. I checked my extra copies that had been kept in the basement in black dvd storage containers and they were bad too. Fortunately I had backups on hard drives that I migrate every few years from server to server.

Unpowered USB or SSD’s that haven’t been refreshed are only good for 10 years too.

Every year I pick out my favorite pictures of the year and print a physical photo album.

some_guy , to linuxmemes in Tough choice

Depends if the guy has social skills. There’s someone who recently joined at my work who seems to have some social development issues. He’s perfectly intelligent, but has no apparent filter and discusses topics that aren’t appropriate to discuss with people you don’t really know (about his feelings in awkward ways). If it was someone like that, I’ll take the wolves. If it’s someone who can sense when I want to take a break, Linux guy and I probably have some common interests.

Do people not know that Cuzco is a real city? As in the capital city of the Inca Empire?

It’s still there in Peru.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I think you’ll find the actual city in Peru is more commonly spelled Cusco, whereas the emperor who lost his groove was named Cuzco.

Also, lighten up, it’s a shitpost.
