Don’t get that card. I used to have it but it would randomly output max volume static… Not a fun experience.

Had the same thing with a Xonar DX, probably got some permanent hearing damage from that.

LodeMike OP ,

MM yes. Thanks.

I’ll offer that I’ve had the DX for probably a decade and had zero trouble, but of course YMMV.

@Digestive_Biscuit@feddit.uk avatar

I had a Xonar about 15 years ago. Can’t remember the model. Its surround sound has a delay on the rear speakers, made playing games in 5.1 impossible, horrible reverb effect. The official drivers didn’t fix it, I had to get a non-official driver pack to fix the issue.

“extremely rare” is a way of saying second most common that I haven’t heard before.

webghost0101 ,

Technically correct but just cause there are minerals in the ground doesn’t mean they can be extracted.

Maybe i am wrong but i keep hearing about silicon being harder to come, i suppose op was specifically speaking about the silicon usable for computing.

kameecoding ,

silicon being harder to come

interesting silicone usually makes it easier for me to come

fidodo ,

The rare stone thing would be better for nuclear power. Find lots of rare stone, put it together in a huge pile, they get warm and cause mysterious diseases.

AngryCommieKender ,

Uranium is actually pretty common, refining out the right isotope is the complicated part. Heck there were a couple natural nuclear reactors in a place that generated power for a few million years.

…wikipedia.org/…/Natural_nuclear_fission_reactor

fidodo ,

Isn’t uranium that’s pure enough naturally to cause a reaction on its own really rare? I’m referring to the Chicago Pile experiment. It was so simple that it could have been theoretically built thousands of years ago which is crazy to think about.

AngryCommieKender ,

Not really. Every single shovel full of dirt has trace amounts. It’s just gathering enough into a pile. Like I said, nature did it on earth, before humans existed. It’s weapons grade uranium that’s really rare

fidodo ,

You can’t get a reaction when it’s that trace though. It needs to be unusually pure to be able to stack a bunch of raw ore and get a reaction.

AngryCommieKender ,

Nature did get the reaction with no humans. I don’t know what to tell you

Kolanaki ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

I don’t think they mean silicon, I think they mean gold, which is also a crucial component to electronics.

Rodeo ,

Gold also isn’t all that rare. It’s value is so high because of jewelry marketing, not rarity.

TheChurn ,

Gold is rare, compared to just about every other element, in accessible areas of earth. All the gold ever discovered on Earth would fit inside a 23 meter (75 foot) cube. This is about 244 thousand tons, in all of human history.

Compare this to iron, where just the United States produces 46 Million tons in 2022 alone.

There is plenty of gold deep within the Earth - it is very dense, so it sank towards the core when Earth was recently formed - but on the surface and the proximal crust, it is not found in abundance.

brakenium ,

Is that 23mx23mx23m or 23 cubic meters?

ThatWeirdGuy1001 ,
@ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world avatar

Those…Are the same thing?

Edit: I thought they meant 23x23x23 as in dimensions not multiples

No, come on. This is a dark pattern. It’s easy for someone technically-inclined, but most users see only the big obvious buttons and skip right over what looks like it could just be an irrelevant footnote at the bottom. My parents would absolutely end up creating accounts and be frustrated about it, but I’m also willing to bet most of my friends who aren’t in tech would do the same.

You can modify the url to say dl=1 at the end to bypass it. It will just download the file without having to click anything on the site. Should that be something you can enable on the website instead? Sure.

It shouldn't even be something you have to enable at all, this whole thing is ridiculous.

I’ve seen a number of websites where if you click on something it takes you to a massive sign up page with big boxes for a username and password. Then buried in a corner with small text will be the link to click if you already have an account. Basically we don’t give a shit about our current users.

Back in my day, I could do all I needed in Dropbox with a click or two. Now everything is hidden behind multiple menus, obstructed by persistent ads and over-designed interfaces. I will never upgrade, it doesn’t matter how many different ways they try to make it happen. Dropbox used to be simple and no nonsense. It has been shittified for quite some time now.

also, there are indeed lots of books with other names. Millions and millions of books with other names. You should visit a library sometime. Will blow your mind.

No, seriously, I meant other books by the author. And I didn’t find anything about the book online so I thought maybe you confused something but I obviously believe you when you say the book exists.

Communism is when Mexico.

lugal ,

Mexico didn’t build a wall. The Eastern Block did in the cold war. Think the Berlin Wall

andrewth09 ,

Both the US and Mexico are capitalist democracies. The meme implies that Capitalists built a wall to keep Communists out.

It’s an awkward meme that doesn’t make much sense.

lugal ,

It doesn’t imply that. It says that (some) capitalist states build walls to keep refugees out (like the US and in a way the EU) while (some) communist states build walls to keep (potential) refugees in (like the GDR)

Muehe ,

Agreed. And the (probably unintended) irony is that the Berlin Wall was ostensibly built in order to keep the capitalists out. Be careful what you wish for, especially when it’s a wall. They work both ways.

lugal ,

You don’t really believe the propaganda of the “Antifaschistischer Schutzwall”. The wall was always to keep GDR citizens in.
Nobody ever had the intention to keep capitalists out.

Muehe ,

Just highlighting the propaganda for those unfamiliar with it. Seemed à propos.

realitista ,

It never implied the wall was specifically for communists.

Dark Side of the Moon is definitely political, if you want to set a cutoff. Also the first he had a lot of writing credit for, as I understand it. I’m not prepared to argue for earlier than that.

But even Animals, in 1977, is 40+ years before people started complaining about him being too political. It’s a ridiculous claim that deserves no serious consideration.

the_crotch ,

The problem isn’t that he’s political. The problem is he has kid rock’s level of insight. His takes are absurdly dumb and he bloviates about them at length any time he’s in front of a microphone.
