My superpower is that I can plug in USB A the right way up on the first try pretty much every time

BCsven ,

What is ironic is I bought a USB switcher for using Keyboard, Mouse etc with 4 systems; it has the USB ports upside-down.

SpaceCowboy ,
@SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca avatar

Your USB switcher is the work of the devil.

LemmyKnowsBest ,

While I’m extremely envious of you, if I had the opportunity to choose one superpower, there are probably a million others I’d choose before that one haha

like a superpower that gives me exactly as much money as I need at any given moment anytime I need it.

TachyonTele ,

Hell yeah. Then you just just buy a bunch of new USBs instead of sitting there turning it around four times!

Zacryon ,

In that case you could pay tuem for their USB A plug-in service.

Get a USB with a notch on the casing. Observe the orientation with your fingertips.

calabast , to programmerhumor in The Server Fell Over

I’m gonna guess the original version of this joke said “crashed” instead of “fell over”, cause then it would actually be ambiguous enough for the premise to work.

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

I use fell over to mean crashed all the time

TechieDamien ,

Same, I thought it was used commonly too.

litchralee ,

I vaguely recall a (probably apocryphal) story of an early washing machine-sized hard drive that lurched its way across the floor during a customer demo, eventually falling over once the connecting cables pulled taught.

That said, those hard drives did indeed move themselves: catb.org/jargon/html/W/walking-drives.html

Revan343 ,

Some bands of old-time hackers figured out how to induce disk-accessing patterns that would do this to particular drive models and held disk-drive races.

I love the Jargon File

Zorsith ,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

“Fell over”, to me, implies server load balancing.

bamboo ,

I use it to describe a variety of things, but usually it’s related to servers not being able to handle load rather than an outright crash, but I’m not strict about it. Laos balancer failures could be it, could also just be that something was really I efficient but wasn’t noticed until it went into production.

Chronographs ,

“Failed over” does, I’ve never heard fell over mean anything but what’s described in the picture.

Ephera ,

I have heard it before, albeit tongue-in-cheek. So, like the server can be “running”, it can also trip and fall over.

Mouselemming ,

That’s probably fallout from the early days of this joke. After seeing this image with ‘the server crashed’, funny programmers would start saying their server “fell over” to reference that memory. Now it’s come full circle. Meanwhile those of us who are “grandma peering at the computer screen” would only say a computer has “crashed.” And wouldn’t know how to fix it beyond a couple of tries at turning it off and back on again. (Which usually does work, though!)

Mac ,

yeah i was thinking “down”.

Bezier ,
@Bezier@suppo.fi avatar

Or a different language. To me, they’re the same word, so this pun would actually work properly.

Oh fuck! Is that a RAID array? That must’ve taken so long to put back together!

Ciel ,
@Ciel@lemmygrad.ml avatar

those are hdd’s, there is no putting that back together

GrundlButter ,

If the inertia didn’t physically damage more than half of those drives, I would be surprised. I don’t think redundancy is a factor in this scenario. This has 3 likely outcomea. Restore from local backup in a different rack, restore from cloud/offsite backup, or the whole company needs to update their resumes.

maculata , to memes in USB tunneling

I love how everyone is trying make up some ‘logical system’ or magical thinking about the completely arbitrary and random nature of the problem.

It’s not like there’s a big hairy USB god in the clouds who is going listen to all your jibber-jabber or that there’s some hidden alchemical formula that will turn the wrongly oriented USB connection into the golden correct orientation everytime.

It’s all bullshit. I don’t care if you are offended. It’s not the Bronze Age anymore. Just grow up and look at your damn USB connector, and then the socket.

SCIENCE, BITCH.

fatalError ,

That may help in the case of a properly installed usb port, but what if the port is upside down? Or what if it’s a vertical port? Is upside left or right?

mexicancartel ,

You should get familiar with your own ports. You not gonna flip the ports

fatalError ,

Not talking about my ports. Also ports can be installed the wrong way by the manufacturer. I had a pc case that the front usb ports upside down. But again, usb ports can be installed vertically, in which case it won’t matter if you know which is up or down your usb plug, because now it’s left or right

mexicancartel ,

I mean, if your manufacturer installed USB ports the wrong way, you have to get familiar to know which direction the ports face(the wrong way if ports are wrong), then you only have to see the usb since you already know the ports

fatalError ,

What about the back of your tv? Or friend’s PC? Or library computer? Or phone charger? Or… Any other Universal device using the Universal Serial Bus…

You may learn YOUR devices, but you may also have to interact with other devices at times and USB didn’t make it easy in the past.

Now, type C is a thing and it helps with plugging it in right the first time, but that one has the HUGE issue with allowing any protocol since USB 1.0 and everyrhing else is optional. So even though you can plug a type C monitor into a type C microphone, nothing will happen, so it’s not stupid proof anymore.

mexicancartel ,

True, but rare. Back of your TV? You’ll defenitely see it while plugging in because you wouldn’t even know where the ports are otherwise. Other’s devices don’t work but you still can flip it three times since thats rare

My old Lenovo tablet has the USB port upside down on the plug, and consequently, the micro USB also plugs into the tablet upside down. And for some reason, stupid thing always breaks the little notches on the micro USB, so you have to position everything in a way so that it won’t slide out while charging.
