we’re working on a third party solution for this. Should have some updates that sandbox cargo builds shortly.

github.com/phylum-dev/birdcage

It’s a cross-platform sandbox that works on Linux via Landlock and macOS via Seatbelt. We’ve rolled this into our CLI (github.com/phylum-dev/cli) so you can do thinks like:

<span style="color:#323232;">phylum
</span>

For example for npm, which currently uses the sandbox:

<span style="color:#323232;">phylum npm install
</span>

We’re adding this to cargo to similarly sandbox crate installations. Would love feedback and thoughts on our sandbox!

Compile llama.cpp, download a small GGML LLM model and you will have a quite intelligent assiatant running into your phone.

bassomitron ,

Would that actually be decent? Even 6b models feel way too rudimentary after experiencing 33+b models and/or chatgpt. I haven’t tried those really scaled down and optimized models, though!

gibson ,

They’re decent for text completion purposes, e.g. generating some corpspeak for an email, or generating some “wikipedia”-like text. You have to know how to write good prompts, don’t try to treat it like ChatGPT.

For example if i want to know about the history of Puerto Rico I would put:

“The history of puerto rico starts in about 480BC when”

acec ,

Decent enough for a model 50 times smaller than ChatGPT. I use orca_mini_3b.

lamacpp is kind of this. you give it a path to a model and a prompt. download a smallish model GGUF file by thebloke. lamacpp main exec has an interactive mode too which can function like a chatbot. i never built it on android though maybe you need android NDK

I mean, it’s technically correct? The G does stand for GNU, and GNU tools can be used to build Linux. It is indeed worded very badly.

Bye ,

No basically all Linux uses gnu Coreurils as a foundation and is therefore best called gnu+Linux. There’s a great RMS rant about this , it’s what the title is referring to.

Ddhuud ,

And the next time RMS invent Linux, he can call it whatever he wants.

YaBoyMax ,

Calling it now, 2024 will be the year of the Hurd desktop.

DryTomatoes ,

They should make a new version of Linux From Scratch where all you get is the Linux kernel source code and you write the compiler and core utils yourself. Now that would be Linux.

blackbrook ,

Aren’t their embedded systems that run the Linux kernel without the core-utils (maybe with busybox instead) and would therefore be non-gnu linux variants?

YaBoyMax ,

Yep, Alpine Linux does this as well.

jsnc ,

Yeah these would be called NonGNU/Linux or Busybox/Linux.

jsnc ,

GNU is the name of the operating system. GNU packages like glibc and gcc can be used for an operating system. Gzip is a GNU package.

erwan ,

No, that’s a big confusion.

I hate the RMS rant about how you’re supposed to say “GNU/Linux”, but here we’re talking about a GNU package that can be used without Linux. It’s on FreeBSD and even macOS.

    in the theory

    of course no one includes genocide in their theory but if you try to apply communist theory to reality you’ll end up with it. so instead of looking at theories start looking at reality

    irmoz ,

    but if you try to apply communist theory to reality you’ll end up with genocide

    How? What do you know of the theory?

    If something is not part of communist theory, what sense does it make to call it a part of communism?

    And yes, genocidal ideologies do in fact have genocide in their theory. Just read anything written by Hitler or Mussolini.

    ArcticLynx ,

    every time it was tried communism failed eventually. it always caused oppression and in extreme cases even genocide. it doesn’t really matter what the theory looks like if that’s the reality

    irmoz ,

    If your cake recipe asks for flour, sugar, milk and eggs, and you decide to use piss instead of milk, and shit instead of eggs, I’m not gonna buy it when people eat your cake and say cakes taste like shit and piss, though I will agree that your particular attempt did.

    When Im working hard to get somewhere in the company I get shit from people:

    “ThE cOmPaNy dOeSn’T cArE aBoUt YoU…”

    Yeaah I fucking know the company doesn’t care. But its not like I’m getting a different and better role + a better salary if I just work the bare minimum and give zero shits about everything. In the end some people just work harder for selfish reasons, I doubt its for company loyalty or Love of flowers.

    OhHiMarx ,

    In a vast majority of cases, no one is to get a better role or salary for working harder or caring more. You’re a fool if you think otherwise.

    The “company doesn’t care about you” line you’re so quick to mock is specifically referring to how hard you work and contribute. It’s weird that you don’t understand that.

    Kodemystic ,
    @Kodemystic@lemmy.kodemystic.dev avatar

    How is it weird? How is it weird to believe that getting somewhere takes hard work? Please tell me how can one get a better role and conditions without working harder or caring more because if there is one then I’d be glad to walk that road instead. I just don’t see it.

    pulsereaction ,

    You should prioritize yourself. If you’re recognized for your hard work, then all the power to you. People are just skeptic because most of the time, no matter how hard you work, you never get any valuable recognition for it.

    If you don’t feel recognized, it’s still valid to do work that you believe will contribute to your professional growth - as a way to prepare yourself for the next step.

    A normal set of calipers has 3 basic modes of measuring things: inside, outside, and depth. It is amazing to me how many people in this thread don’t know at least one of those or use them wrong.

    Goldmage263 ,
    @Goldmage263@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Tbf people my age and younger (barely below 1/2 the population) typically don’t use them in most careers or even learn about calipers in High School. My work was the first place that properly taught me how to measure internal diameter and depth.

    headmetwall ,

    At least it makes me feel good that I only just got a set for the first time last week and figured all those out within 5 min of actually using them.

    Black616Angel ,

    Tbf I use mine daily and had to pause a second thinking what would be the third mode. (never use it to measure depth)

    Silentrizz ,

    arf_arf , to asklemmy in What is the biggest lesson that employment has taught you?
    @arf_arf@reddthat.com avatar

    Learned this very early at my first job. I was new to the whole content writing industry so I kept to just writing the minimum expected 2000 words per day.

    Meanwhile two other coworkers with more experience wanted to impress the management I guess and wrote way above that.

    The result? More and more work for them. And also when performance reviews came along I was the only one to get a raise because “the quality of my writing was above average in the company.”

    In the end, they were punished for “over productivity” while I was rewarded because sticking with the minimum word counts meant I had time to polish my work.
