CMUS! I’m surprised more people aren’t using this. It’s very cool, ultra lightweight, and easy to use. Maybe I just like stuff that runs in the console.
cmus is great, it checks all my boxes, and is much easier to work with than mpd imo. The only downside for me is that I can’t see any of the cover art :(
There is no great/simple linux music player with proper cover display. Eliza was so wonky when I tried it months ago, the most simple functions didn’t work properly (like sorting for release year etc.)
We live in rented honeycomb-like structures to extract maximum rental value, performing all our work in VR offices managed by social media companies. The concepts of “home” and “alone” no longer exist.
Historians rediscover the original movie Home Alone, and over the course of 16 academic papers, explore these antiquated notions. The first four papers cover the economics by which noncorporate entities have legal rights and may own land. The next four the idea that some places could be different from others, making leisure travel relevant. After that, the idea that physical goods could be owned (and therefore “stolen” by “thieves”), not only leased as a DRM-protected service.
Recently been trying to introduce my partner to Doctor Who while he’s staying in Australia. All the episodes used to be up on BritBox because it’s a British show, but they dropped it earlier this year. Now the options are:
Binge (season 4+)
Amazon Prime (season 5+)
Stan (all new seasons, but also the only streaming service I don’t have access to)
It is well known that Tim Sweeney has an unfounded hate for Linux in general and routinely makes up lies to support his idiotic views.
Especially in the case of a game like Fortnite, which uses EAC, it would require enabling a checkbox and recompiling once to make it compatible with proton, which in itself is a rather unnecessary measure imposed by Epic.
So no, it’s not simplistic, it’s literally how it would work in this case. As demonstrated by the countless other games which use EAC and did just that.
However, Fortnite makes so much money that it wouldn’t be a hardship at all for them to do it. It may not be as profitable as other things they could do, but I think it would be a good gesture.
But Epic really doesn’t benefit if the Deck succeeds, especially since they don’t have a store there. It doesn’t really hurt them that much though, but they have no reason to facilitate Deck adoption.
Except if they did enable Fortnite on Deck… As the game is not on steam, people who want to play it would be encouraged to install the epic store on their Decks (which IS possible, and already something people do to play other games from the Epic store on Deck), which would give Epic an in on SteamDeck.
Enabling EACs proton support for Fortnite would be a means to get their foot in the door with Deck players, but you’re saying they wont do it because they don’t have a foot in with Deck players?
I’m saying they won’t do it because it requires work and they don’t think the market is big enough. As you noted, the process for getting EGS on Linux (Deck or otherwise) isn’t straightforward, so few people would do it, which makes the market even smaller.
And it’s not just enabling an option once, they would also need to do some level of QA testing to make sure it’s playable and not easily exploitable by cheaters on Linux. That all costs time and money.
So I completely understand why they wouldn’t bother, the profit just isn’t there. I still think they should, I just understand why they don’t.
I think in this thread we’ve both proven your point about echo chambers on Lemmy… People on here do not seem to realize that 2.5-3% of all desktops is not a great market to get into and that the vast majority of those 2.5% are not even interested in playing the damn game. I also find it funny that so many people on here seem to hate Epic Games saying they would never buy anything from yet they are still very angry they don’t support Linux, like it would affect them.
Have no idea about those standards to be honest, all sorts of Chinese shit appliances get imported here, I don’t think we have a code that regulates that.
Yeah I know plenty of chenese stuff ignores it. I forget where it's said but countertop appliances are supposed to be 3' cords and others are supposed to have 6' cords. And then in houses you're supposed to have plugs at those distances so people usually shouldn't need extension cords.
If you know how to re-wire stuff properly, it’s conceptually an easy process (some devices can be tricky to take apart).
For example, on that toaster you can replace the cable with a longer one, put a new plug on it if that gets worn out, or if absolutely needed splice the cable with another one (that’s for when the device can’t be opened up for some reason)
Unplug toaster before cutting the power cord, or any other maintenance, such as cleaning the 3 years of crumb its collected.
The most preferred method is to replace the entire cable, the wires connect inside the device somewhere, probably with simple screw terminals. Replace the whole cable and you don’t have to worry about any weak points in the splice or insulation, because there are none.
The danger is when you don’t know how electricity and wiring works or get lazy and take shortcuts.
There’s a bunch that can go wrong, some of them have potentially life ending consequences, which is why it’s a bad idea to work on electronics…unless you take the time to learn how they work and be smart about it.
For a cheap toaster, yes, I wouldn’t bother either unless it was the best toaster ever. But for more expensive things, like an air fryer, power tools, vacuums, any thing with sentimental value… it is a great skill to learn how to do safely.
Just replacing a broken plug on an extension cord can save you big, the good cords are going for $20+, a new plug is closer to $2 (although replacing the plug removes its safety for outdoor use as it’s no longer a water tight seal).
Its usually cheaper to replace the damaged part than the whole unit.
With enough Scotch tape they could tape each pair of cats back to back and have 300 million perpetual motion machines. Find a way to harness that energy and you could power the world!
I live in a small town in Vermont, my girlfriend grew up here but moved away to New York City and has recently returned. She hates Christmas and I love it. Ive been trying to get her into the Christmas spirit. We were picking a Christmas tree when i realized we’re literally following the plot of these stupid movies and i now i keep mentioning how i need her big city business skills to help save my Christmas themed bakery
