There’s Linux dists that can only requires less than 200 MB of RAM. Absolute Linux for an example, has a minimum system requirement of 64 MB RAM. Plenty of space left for memory hungry softwares like a browser.

airikr , (edited )

Back to try learning darktable again then…

airikr ,

I can highly recommend Baïkal.

airikr ,

Fossify Calendar and Fossify Contacts on Android and Thunderbird in Linux.

airikr ,

Yes. You have to use DAVx5.

airikr ,

I found QMMP few years ago. As a fan of Winamp, I haven’t looked back yet. QMMP is compatible with Winamp skins too.

kdeltachat - DeltaChat desktop client built with Kirigami (git.sr.ht)

This is DeltaChat desktop client but not with the default Electron. Compile instructions for Debian, Arch Linux and openSUSE. One Linux distribution has this packaged : NixOS, package name kdeltachat-unstable. The software developer is also active in the DeltaChat forum. Posting this here to give this project some more attention...

airikr ,

Show us screenshots instead of telling us how the client looks like!

airikr ,

I am not alone wanting to see screenshots of softwares before even installing them. If you refuse to provide screenshots because someone is not saying please, expect many will not try your DeltaChat client. Over and out.

airikr ,

Different people, different taste.

I love FairEmail because of its “millions” of settings and the privacy features, for an example if you press a link, you’ll get a popup with options (for an example, what app you want to open the link with). And if the link contains trackers, FairEmail will remove these by default and saying “tracking parameters removed” with yellow text in bold.

K-9 Mail feels incomplete in comparison. Have you tried FairEmail?

airikr ,

And when was “last time”? :) I have been using F-Droid for FairEmail since I tried the email client for the first time few years ago and I have never got any issues. Just updated FairEmail while writing this comment. Works just fine :)

airikr ,

Indeed. Their knowledge and detailed articles are pure gold!

airikr ,

It looks more like he/she uses Lite XL.

airikr ,

How about that :) Nice! Too bad search and replace screwed the whole software by settings CPU to 100% all the time. Because of that, I’ll stick to Lite XL. Otherwise, a very nice fork.

I made wanderer - a self-hosted trail and GPS track database (lemmy.world)

Over the last two months, I developed wanderer. It is a self-hosted alternative to sites like alltrails.com or in other words a self-hosted trail database. It started out more as a small hobby project to teach myself some new technologies but in the end, I decided to develop it into a fully-fledged application....

airikr ,

I tried Wanderer few days ago and I did find it very nice, yet quite buggy.

I was forced to update the page a second time before being able to do something, for an example using the menu.

But other than that, I find Wanderer very nice! Just miss seeing mainly how fast I was travelled in km/h. The statistics and details provided in workout-tracker1 is absolutely amazing! If you add such details into your project, that would be awesome!

airikr ,

Very nice :) Me like! But the bug is still there when you have clicked on a trail on the home page. The page just scrolls up to the top and you have to update the page to see the trail.

airikr ,

Oh, hello late 1990s and early 2000s 😍 I love it! Nostalgia deluxe 😌

Are there any Windows-exclusive programs you use?

I had to test/fix something at work and I set up a Windows VM because it was a bug specific to Windows users. Once I was done, I thought, “Maybe I should keep this VM for something.” but I couldn’t think of anything that wasn’t a game (which probably wouldn’t work well in a VM anyway) or some super specific enterprise...

airikr ,

Why not Gramps which is open sourced and works flawlessly in Windows, Limux, and macOS? 🙂

airikr ,

Adobe Lightroom Classic. I have darktable installed on Linux, but I haven’t mastered it yet. Lightroom is the software for photo edoting, unfortuntately.

airikr ,

Indeed! I get excited when it is Friday, but sad/empty when I have read the newsletter. And after a few minutes of sadness, I start counting down the days to next Friday again.

airikr ,

Looks good. But I have to ask: why modernize such beautiful theme? The theme in Windows 2000 was even more beautiful, though, but Windows 98 have that nostalgic feeling.

airikr ,

Done :)

airikr ,

Yeah, links are very useful :) You’re welcome.

airikr ,

I would say KISS Launcher.

airikr ,

It always feels great :)

airikr ,

You’re welcome :)

Yes, I have. I really liked it, but I didnt like that GitHub blocked me every now and then. I don’t have any account there due to privacy reasons.

I somewhat don’t mind outdated apps. It depends on what app it is. I wouldn’t use Bitwarden if they stop develop their app, as of 1 example.

airikr ,

For me personally, it’s Victor Mono and Iosevka. Victor Mono for desktop and Iosevka for VSCodium.

airikr ,

Nice! That font really looked nice through the smartphone. Will try it out in VSCodium when I can. Thanks!

airikr ,

Thanks for the link 🙂

airikr ,

Why? 😄

airikr ,

That’s because Victor Mono are a tabular font meaning equal width no matter what character it is :) I find it nice.

airikr ,

Don’t forget the highly customizable and themeable Kanboard, made by the same people behind Miniflux. I will check out plane, though. Looks neat!

airikr , (edited )

Begin small, end big. That works for everything when learning something new. So, with that said, go for Linux Mint Cinnamon.

I begun my Linux journey with elementary OS which is more for macOS users. I was a Windows user so I switched to Linux Mint Cinnamon. After a few years of exploring and learning, I am now using EndeavourOS.

airikr OP ,

That was the issue! So v4.18.8 change from Shortcuts to Tree automatically. Good to know when Thunar will be updated on my laptop. Many thanks :)

airikr OP ,

What I can remember, I tried that when Thunar got updated. No difference. The Shortcuts view doesn’t have these different heights, so I am now happy :) Time to finally uninstall Nemo.

airikr OP ,

That one I really liked! Will try it out during this weekend. Thanks :)

airikr OP ,

Hm. You’re probably right. When I uninstalled Nemo, it also uninstalled cinnamon-desktop. Luckily, I am using EndeavourOS Xfce 😌

Yepp! Thunar is the best file manager out there for me, and I have tried a handful of them.

airikr ,

Have to try virtually! Even if Windows 10 are so much better than Windows 11.

airikr ,

Hehe. That edition of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. works in Linux through Lutris 😊 Not perfectly, but it works.

airikr ,

I am using linkding for my bookmarks. Used LinkAce before. linkding is perfect for my minimalistic taste. I just miss having an app for it. There’s an app for linkding for iOS, though.

airikr ,

Indeed. I use Xfce and have to switch to Cinnamon to get a very good multi-monitor support.

airikr ,

Xfce have a hard time recognize recently plugged in monitors. I have to restart the PC with the monitors plugged in to have a 50/50 chance to make it work. Or just switch to Cinnamon and make it wok right away.

airikr ,

Nope. Since Cinnamon fixes the issue, I have no plans to test with other distros 😊 But I might some day.

airikr ,

As of now:

  • vaultwarden
  • linkding
  • Mumble server

I can’t live without the first 2, though.
