Fisk400 , to asklemmy in Why are many men growing beards again ?

The biggest problem with growing a beard is that it only looks good after a certain amount of time. When people grow beards it’s usually when they are on vacation because it is nice not having to shave and you dont have to look professional with a crazy half grown beard.

A couple of years ago the word took an extended vacation and a lot of people took the opportunity to grow a beard.

blindsight ,

Eh, idk. Depends on the person. I’ve been going for a “scruff” look for a few years now. I trim close-ish 1-2 times/week, just before it starts to get itchy from hairs getting long enough. I always have at least 1-2mm facial hair.

If I go clean-shaven, I have baby face and I look 10 years younger. Not a good look. A bit of scruff makes me look closer to my age, but I don’t like the look of a full beard on me since I can’t grow a decent mustache. It looks like I’m trying too hard.

velox_vulnus , (edited ) to linux in what do you think about my tier list of distros

This tier-list is terrible, but what really makes me really mad is that there’s no damn explanation, and that the tier-list is self-contradictory. Linux Mint good, Debian bad…but Linux Mint is indirect downstream of Debian, and it is really reliable, so the math ain’t working? Arch good, but Artix and Parabola bad - the only difference being that you get init freedom in the latter distros? And seriously, what is KDE Neon and GNOME OS doing over there - they exist to showcase the latest desktop environment beta? And according to your logic, AlmaLinux bad, but CentOS good - when the former came to substitute the dying CentOS? And Guix at the bottom, while it uses Guile Scheme, which is more wide-spread and accepted than the niche half-Haskell half-something-else Nix DSL - let’s also not forget the NixOS controversy and Eelco vs Nix community drama - and NixOS is somehow on the top-most list? ryantm’s bot is really good and keeps Nix packages upto date, but apart from that, Nix and Guix are the same thing minus their language.

Unfortunately the developer often doesn’t have packages or they don’t update them.

Such is the case for Zoom. I downloaded the “official” distribution but I had no way to update it so it eventually became stale and started breaking.

Also Discord. There was no official release until very recently.

I have good credit but I cannot buy a house.

LinkOpensChest_wav ,
@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

My husband and I bought ours in 2019, and I feel like we did so in the nick of time, and that’s with being on two programs and taking an additional loan for the down payment, and that’s because paying the mortgage was lower than renting an apartment at the time.

People can’t afford housing anymore. I feel guilty even owning a house because it’s gotten so bad (even though the bank technically owns this shit).

Buying a house was what pushed me from Bernie flavored socialist to full on leftist. We were lucky enough to find and qualify for a community land trust and it is such a better system than anything else in America. It should just be how housing is done available to everyone, not just people who qualify.

biribiri11 ,

I feel guilty even owning a house because it’s gotten so bad

It’s not like prices are going to rise forever. Market cycles are natural. There will be a crash, and there will be cheaper homes once again, and as long as the government is competent, random businesses won’t buy them all with the intent to rent them out to potential homeowners.

Fixbeat ,

You need credit and money. Ironic eh?

CableMonster ,

Thats a seperate issue, that is central banks and over regulation of the housing market. This has devalued your wages and made housing too expensive. And the sad part is BOTH of the parties support these things (if you are an american).

Technus , to memes in shrooms?

Even some of the ones that are edible still secretly want to kill you. From the Wikipedia entry for “chicken of the woods”:

In some cases eating the mushroom "causes mild reactions … for example, “swollen lips” or in rare cases “nausea, vomiting, dizziness and disorientation” to those who are sensitive. This is believed to be due to a number of factors that include allergies to the mushroom’s protein or toxins which are only somewhat stable at high temperatures.

I’ll eat portabellos if they come on pasta or pizza (though I’ve started taking them off the latter because they turn to rubber in the microwave) but I sure as hell am not going out of my way to order any dish that features them (mushrooms) as the main protein.

groet ,

pizza

microwave

I don’t think the mushrooms are the problem in that situation

Technus ,

Bite me, I don’t have the counter space for a toaster oven and I’m not heating up the actual oven every time I want a leftover slice.

If the pizza is made from quality ingredients to begin with, it survives microwaving decently well. Mushrooms just refuse to play ball.

notabot ,

If you have a stove I can definitely recommend heating your pizza in a dry (with no oil) frying pan. Set the temperature medium-low and heat a slice or two at a time for a few minutes. It comes out like it was freshly cooked.

I learned this hack shortly before being diagnosed with celiac and lactose intolerance haha, after a lifetime of eating cold slices

I can confirm it works well, though

notabot ,

Oof, that sucks. It seems like the universe really does enjoy a cruel prank sometimes. I hope you’ve found something equally enjoyable to fill the pizza shaped hole in your meals.

LinkOpensChest_wav ,

I did, thanks! I just eat tacos and stuff when I need my comfort food fix

Tar_alcaran ,

Veggie crusts are actually pretty good nowadays. Unfortunately, lactose-free cheese is not.

But aren’t parmesan and Gouda very low in lactose, because they can be quite old?

Technus ,

I finally got around to trying this. I don’t see the point. By the time the cheese was re-melted, the crust turned into a hard cracker and it took ten times longer than the microwave. It’s quite possible I had the stove up too high (it’s an electric stove and I had it on 4/10), but I’d still say the point goes to the microwave for being quicker and having greater margin for error.

notabot ,

Hmmm, it’s hard to debug pizza remotely, but maybe the heat wasn’t high enough, it normally only takes a minute or two to heat through and cooking it for longer probably would make the base go hard.

Thanks for reporting bavk though, and I’m sorry you had a suboptimal pizza result.

EmoDuck ,

I hope you’ll soon get the help you need 🙏

gimpchrist ,
@gimpchrist@lemmy.world avatar

If the pizza is made from real quality ingredients to begin with you should be comfortable with eating it cold judgement eyes

systemglitch ,

I think it’s perfect part cold and part warm… Best of both worlds.

systemglitch ,

Here’s a hint for you. Lower the power of the microwave to 4/10 and cook about 50% longer. Once you get the timing down you leftover pizza will be much better and less rubbery.

Most people are clueless about how to properly use a microwave, because no one teaches us, but max all the time is not how it should be used.

Technus ,

That’s effectively what I do, I don’t just blast it for a minute and a half.

I normally don’t futz with the power settings but I’ll do 30s at a time and check if it’s heated, then move it around so the hotspots in the microwave hit different parts of it (the turntable only does so much).

candybrie ,

Some people also get mild to severe reactions to pizza. They’re sensitive to night shade. Or lactose intolerant. Or have celiac’s. Or are allergic to one of the toppings.
